A key indicator of soil health is the number of earthworms present in the soil. Without earthworms creating macropores the soil will be lacking pore space for water drainage and air (oxygen).
Not all commerical fertilizers are a salt as suggested. Some become a salt as a result of chemical reaction in the soil after application.
