That person was refering to him in general not so much in this movie. They said that because he used this exact style for other films as well which didn't work. Just because you get nominated doesn't make you great in everything. It's like saying you have to like all Shyamalan's films because he made The Sixth Sense. I'm a guy I'll admit, but gender doesn't make my opinion. He seems nice, but keep in mind he's talked about wanting to be a construction worker anyway, not an actor.

Well I imagine he does have SOME fun being an actor given the pay, the respect from others, and the chance to meet some interesting people and work in movies, but he could always have other interests. He might have changed his mind since he said it, but the guy could probably be more helpful in every day things than he is in Hollywood things. I think there's a greater need for houses than whatever he's doing. Plus watching someone who doesn't care act can be painful at times.

Pretty bad overall though it's not entirely his fault. With lines like where he compares Natalie Portman's smooth skin to sand it's hard to come out strong. That said I don't really care for the way he played that role. I thought he was pretty emotionless and lacked any qualities to make me feel any sympathy for the character. But that's just what I got out of it.

Somehow I sense Nicolas Sparks watched this movie and thought no one would notice if he made complete rip-offs of it. To this movie's credit while the scenes between Sam and Alyssa is predictable and cliche (if not somewhat disturbing) and while I'm not a big fan of Christensen's acting, I can see there was effort put in here from everyone to make this movie better than one would have expected. Sparks on the other hand is just a repetitive writer who compares himself to Cormac McCarthy.

I think this film would have worked better if the son wasn't such a cliché of your traditional "rebellious teenager". There doesn't even seem to be a reason for his rebellion except for maybe listening to one too many Manson CDs, and his character isn't really developed too much, and he just seems brainless rather than making an informed statement.
