@popazz1 Im pretty sure its Edward whos their for the deals. They all do their part as charley said. They all sit round a dinner table with the rest of the world and thrash out a good deal and none of this is seen in the public eye. The queen for example has done deals with George W Bush and all sorts to help the country out. Just because their not in the papers everyday doesn't mean they do nothing, they have done more for this country then me and you have ever done.

Actually, there is some merit to having a head of state separate from the chief executive. This person would throw out the first ball at the beginning of the baseball season and host the World Series champion at the end. He/she could be elected by a direct popular vote while the electoral college would remain for the real president. The only real rule of the job is that the hed of state may not set foot in the West Wing of the White House.

I always thought the purpose of the royal family is to preserve their cultural identity. Kind of like a national morale booster and cultural anchor at the same time. Also to keep the traditions that made Britian what it is alive. We have no such cultural symbolism here in the U.S. that I can think of.

Powers have not been taken but transferred to the Prime Minister. Comments like yours make me realise that you know the cost of everything, but the value of nothing.

Different mentality I suppose: I am pro democracy, but I am also very monarchist and will remain so. Don't tar yourself with the cynical brush lol

I shook HRH Prince Charles hand when He visited Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada about 10 years ago. I've never forgotten that encounter.

Thats the thing, if you were rid of all that, the Royal Family and such, youd still have to maintain the palaces and castles as national treasures. Youd still have state dinners and youd still have the expense. I dont know what money the Rep. think theyd be saving. Id bet my life that if it did happen - that the British people would find that they are paying more - for the gov to perform the same functions the royals performed - and there is the charity money lost and such as well.

The Royals are one of the biggest tourist draws in Britain and create an incredible amount of income for all Britons...62p a year per person seems worth it. Britain wouldn't be Britain without the Royal family, Just in financial terms alone it makes sense. It makes you stand out in the world and we love you for it!

The Royal Family are well worth the money! Millions of people come to Britian to see the grandeur of the Monarchy.
People talk about how much the Royals cost, but at least they do something to earn their keep. Here in the US ,we spend millions on supporting a useless political class in Washington,DC and paying a small fortune supporting ex-presidents and their families.All of who are wealthy in their own right!
