  • This is one phish I'd definitely throw back

  • Ever since I've heard this song, I've thought I'd almost sounded like a Garcia/Hunter composition. I could almost hear the Dead playing this tune.

A great Phish song, for sure. I really dug, and still do dig, Round Room. A really good, gritty album.

  • @phishinvan

Dude... I listened to this song for the first time today while hiking through a local park. And I am a huge dead head, and I imagined Jerry and the boys playing it. Then just now I come home and look it up on youtube and see that you felt the same way. The guitar solo, and all. Makes me think of those 76 77 ballads.

  • @ShuguProductions Cool man. I'm glad you hear it too. Your message had me singing it in the shower this morning. There are so many points of this seemingly simple song; by Phishs' standards; that are so Dead-esque. The "and after you do--o-o" part sounds the dead. The opening. I could imagine almost every original Grateful Dead members part in this song. Mickey and Billy, and Jerry's voice would be killer on this song. About to pop in Round Room on my rainy drive. Take care!

  • Mike plays a 5 string....get it right.

  • phish playing without a dress??? mike without his 6 string?? this is different. its too serious. ik its tv buts its just not phish

  • @LedZeppelin362 Not to nitpick....well, maybe slightly, Mike plays a 5 string Modulus.

He may have a 6 string, but he's played a 5 for years and years.

  • One of my all time favorite Phish songs.

  • Love the minimalistic solo by Trey! Very subtle! Great bend / timbre!

  • I will confess this just now, Trey got clean and inspired me to do the same. Saw them 100% sober for the first time 100% sober 2010. Thank you Trey, I know it sounds corny, but the painkiller plight is something we shared at the same time, around 2000-2006 and someone I know gave me the heads up on Trey WAY before the arrest. Phish is back and in full form! PHISH FOREVER!

  • @MarcoGreenberg Good for you MarcoGreenberg!!! Keep it up!

  • Dude, ason, are you even a Phish fan? How an you not like Prince Caspian, Sleeping Monkey, and Bug?

  • Oh, and Tweezer has never been good. lol. Soooooo long and soooo bad! Worse than Prince Caspian, Sleeping Monkey, and Bug!

  • Um...

You sound like someone who likes pop music, which Phish is not.. So.. find another band to bitch about? kthxbai

  • Comment removed

  • i remember this, what a mess. definitely not one of their best Letterman performances. They should have done Mexican Cousin.

  • lol

  • Good is good regardless of number of chords, from Coltrane's Giant Steps to a 1chord Tweezer jam. If you enjoy it than number of chords is irrelevant!

  • i will always love this band. but trey did miss like four note bends in arow. too bad they didnt have split open right after to rectify.

  • Man, it's nice that trey is off the smack. Let's all just forget about Phish 2.0

  • @redresch you sure trey is off the smack? i dont know of the extent of the guys use. either way, at 1:15 there is a major vocal blooper.

  • Nah man of course he is still on it! I mean, he only gets drug tested and is on probation. He is TOTALLY still doing mass amounts of drugs! As if you couldn't tell blatantly from his ability to play the songs this year versus the year of 2003.

    (10)

^ That's a sarcasm scale for all of you morons out there.

  • @redresch agreed

  • okay. first of all, the bassist looks like merry from lord of the rings. second. what is with the speedheads on this wall just hating all over everyone. keep it in your pants, guys.

  • He is actually a well-groomed chewbcca.

  • Dude, I love phish, but that made me laugh so hard!!!

  • you should grow cancer and die slow

  • I must say, it's ridiculous to be saying these "3 chord songs" are lame, when they've made other songs with 3 chords or less. And the fact that a person would rate a song as a whole based on the number of chords and complexity is ridiculous as well. If you're really a fan of music in general, you wouldn't discriminate against so called "simple songs". And if you don't like a particular song, cool, don't be an asshole to those who do. Everybody has different tastes, respect them.

  • right on man. sometimes less is more. a lot of folk tunes utilize 3-5 chords but are still very powerful.

  • @jw89 less is more.

  • pretty nice song!Well i liked it!

  • i like this song. the round room songs were great. seven below, waves were sick jams live. only douchebags think post hiatus sucked. it was all about the dirty jams. haters can fuck off.

  • agreed. this song is great.

-7 is one of my fave tunes

  • pffft. read the book.

  • this tune should be called subterranian horseshit extravaganza

  • trey was on oxy's?

    how'd you know

  • no, before the bust. Cause a co-worker is friends with Page. I found out by accident, I mentioned Phish is my fav band and he all nonchalantly said, "Yeah, I'm old friends with Page, we used to get high together" I almost lost it.

  • so, i heard he was on opiates b4 the bust from a credible source, a friend of a band member. smart ass schrumpfl

  • if someone calling themselves "JizzFaceLover" tells you something, u better believe it!!! except if it's sex help.

  • why cant someone be mature and like to relax with a little dope? cultures around the world have smoked marijuana for thousands of years, are you saying page is more "mature" than they are?

    420 420 420 420 doody doody pee pee buttz

  • does it really matter? he's a kick ass pianist. who cares what he does in his spare time? spank the monkey or smoke dope; its his life. dont judge, bitch

  • dont say "bitch", woman-hater.

  • first of all its PHISH you dumb shit and most of them if not all of them smoke weed

  • jon fishman is not spelled Phish why are you calling someone a dumb shit you fucking crusty

  • And your source is what exactly?

Since Mike doesn't do drugs I'm interested to hear, as you just sound like a horribly uneducated person making the band look bad.

  • Comment removed

  • there is an interview where mike talks about not doing drugs

  • holy shit do we have the same name?!?!?!?

    slash are you a PTer?

  • Yes I'm sure there's no way that the guy was pulling your chain and just name-dropping..

  • He was on opiates heavily in 2003 and most of 2004. There are some shows that are more evident than others, but just to give you a good example, check out the very first "Destiny Unbound" from the 03 tour.

Trey sounds like absolute SHIT, he can't hit the notes, and he thinks he's hitting them, as he never stops and resets himself. Having played on PKs before, I know how this happens.

Shit sounds good in your head when you know you're just not hitting it correctly on the strings.

  • check out 4-26-96 the best ya mar of all time

  • used to listen to this on oxy...and i knew trey was on it too. I'm glad we're both better now!

  • Phat fishman?

  • i like round room also its the type of album you can listen to it from the first song to the last music is diffrent for everyone if they dont inpire you anymore then dont complain just find a new band

  • sadly very uninspired. I hope 2009 finds them ready to roll.

  • wgh why weight

  • sounds like theres too a bit of a struggle between page and trey in some parts of this

  • That usually happens when the person who sings most of the lines.. doesn't sing.

Trey sucks at singing, the only times its been at par with Page (sometimes Mike, he's better than Trey but def. no Page) is when they were focusing heavily on Bluegrass. Page tries to sing in key like the songs are supposed to go, but most of the time has to harmonize with Trey's "singing" (talking with raised/lowered notes here and there) to make it sound like a choral arrangement should.

  • @phildd0t He is not terrible, he is good music theory-wise, but he just doesn't concentrate, which is hard to do while playing guitar. If you knew music theory I think you would appreciate their singing more. It's not perfect, and they're excellent while not playing instruments, look at them singing the national anthem.

  • @LSUsuperBuick

I know music theory, i play in a band. and this is just not amazing in any way. I can't say its terrible, cause it least he puts some soul into it. But these guys just dont deserve the popularity they have. This sounds like background music in a coffee shop, and thats where they should be.

  • @tgmonster2 If you are a music theory buff, then this isn;t hte phish song you should be listening to. Go listen to Fluffhead, or Divided Sky, or YEM... By the way, most beatles songs were 3 chords as well.

  • @tgmonster2 yeah bro I think they were going to play a vermont starbucks last summer, but they had their sold out Fenway Park shows to be at. know your role.

  • @tgmonster2 Let me translate your obvious jealousy for you: You are in a crappy coffee shop band, and are envious that they are so popular while you wallow in a mixture of a)ack of talent and b)garbage taste

  • I don't think there was ever a point that i lost interest. Listen, musicians styles and sounds change with influences, and life. If you cant deal with a little change, well i dont know what to tell you.

  • there's a differnece between evolution and giving up-what you're hearing here is definitely not evolution-sorry-i don't need a lesson in life from you-i've been around just long enough to distinguish between growth and stagnation-i don't know what to tell you either-but, i'll try: "you suck"

  • Bottom line is that I listened to Phish for a very specific thing - complex songwriting with flawless musicianship. Once that went away and they started writing easy 3 chord pop-type stuff, the very essence of what I loved about the band ceased to exist. If I want 3 chord pop-type tunes, I'll listen to Ben Folds or Jack Johnson. They do a much better job of it than Phish unfortunately.

  • These lyrics are beautiful in my opinion.

  • My god......this era of Phish is just so embarrassing. Boring 3 chord songs, inability to sing, etc....

Why everyone is so stoked to see them return is just baffling....

  • You're a straight up asshole. They're incredible musicians, and it doesn't always have to take more than 3 chords to really move a listener. I'd like to see you try to point out a better rock band... There isn't one!!

  • You wanna name call? Ok, then listen up douchebag. Older heads like me didn't get into Phish to hear them play boring 3 chord waltz's. If you'd have seen them in their untouchable, tour de force prime - which clearly you haven't because you've got a big stiffy for this bathroom break borefest of a song - you'd understand. Phish was groundbreaking, innovative, technically flawless, etc... They are mere shadows of what they once were. Sorry to break the news to you......

  • exactly!!!!!-one wonders if the kids who sing the praises of plastic poop like this would have even liked phish in the early days, when they were actually playing-the funny thing is, i don't think this song is decent even by normal pop standards-it's spiritless and contrived-the real phish escaped from this world via a portel at lorring air force base in 1997-the phish these poor kids seem to worship are record company clones-if you like this song, then, well, you suck balls

  • Yeah let's see I started listening to Phish in the summer of 04 and my favorite years are 90-92. So what does that tell you?

You're a conceited prick who doesn't know shit about what he's talking about when it comes to every other fucking person in the world who likes the same band as you do.

    FFS.

  • i imagine you to be about twenty years old and having maybe attended one or two shows after the hiatus-you don't understand this band-if you did, you'd be totally depressed by this song and everything it represents:the corporate death of a free spirit-listen up, for christ's sake

  • Damn dude you know so much about the band that the band doesn't even know of.

You do know that the entire album was written and tracked in a few days right? So to say that the song represents ONLY the corporate death of a free spirit is a bit of a stretch isn't it?

    Yeah..

  • i'm stoked to see them return, but only in so far as i miss them at their peak and am hoping for a miracle that will restore them to greatness again-i was so consistently dissapointed by this band after about 1998, that i basically stopped going to shows-i lived 30 minutes from coventry and didn't even go-and you hit the nail on the head with the word "embarrassing," because that's exactly what they were around this point-at one show in hartford (circa 1999), i fell asleep

  • your a cocksucker. please kys.

  • Probably the best post-Rift Phish song next to Billy Breathes (the song not the album) and Pebbles and Marbles

  • sir, you are an idiot

  • yes....something you and I agree on. And I'm TOTALLY with you about losing interest after '98. I used to see them about 8-10 times a year from like 94-98 but then I just started to lose interest. I think I only saw them maybe 10 times total after Big Cypress. Their lack of clever, complex songwriting is what did it for me. Well that and the fact that Trey couldn't play anymore.

  • opinions are like a**holes, of which I also classify you, and I could care less for yours

  • you're a douche

  • The last great ballad they wrote was If I Could in 1993. Fast Enough For You, Eliza, they used to be able to write them.

    Oh well.

  • Yeah man Wading in the Velvet sea is just total shit.

Oh what's that? You forgot that was written after 93? It's okay.. we won't hold your ignorance against you.

  • love the lyric "if you keep your heart open" means a whole lot to me!!!

  • LOVE THIS TUNE

  • how many times were they on this show?

  • what 5 or 6? if you watch all of phish on letterman, its kind of interesting to see the progression of the band as they get older. for better or worse is up to you....

  • i like the longer songs better. but this is still cool.

  • Wow thats raw. Trey definitely almost lost it there in tears. Jeez.

  • hahaha

  • im pretty sure his voice just cracked

  • such is the promise, such is the curse

  • great tune

  • This is a great Phish tune, I don't care what anybody says........In fact, Round Room was quite a step up from Farmhouse, and was done in less time. There's a ton of great tunes on Round Room.

  • I agree, I don't think Round Room is ever given the credit it deserves, same with The Siket Disc.

  • i never even heard of siket until like a year ago

  • a bit hard to watch

  • awesome
