@GrapplerMaster i remember watching 5 min of that movie as a kid and i cried my eyes out because when i tuned in like half way through or something, they were shooting the rabbits and blood was going everywhere. i also wonder what the name of the movie was...
I think it's awesome he showed this and reflected on his experiences ... bring this show back and let James host it !!!!! does anyone know more about horror films than this guy??
@advflynm The movie you are referring to is Maximum Overdrive. Same movie that i racked my brain from 14 until 18 to figure out what my long lost nostalgic saturday late night show was. Oh man ....
i totaly admire your tribute. and i agree with 100% of everything u said. i was a teenager and was a huge fan of saturdays with joe bob briggs. i wish monster vision would come back
Man I remember sneaking out of my room and watching Joe Bob as a kid. there was this one movie where all these machines came to life and soda machines were killing kids by shooting soda cans at them, gave me nightmares for weeks
i actually found a movie that a tagline with joe bob briggs being under it and i started freaking out because i remembered this video . i laughed at myself you but its fun to watch these nostalgic videos of when times were simplier and fake blood actually made a splatter.
Oh, I always loved seeing those beakers at the beginning and then the sudden change of venue to Joe Bob Briggs in front of that trailer. It was so "homey" - yes, I've lived in the trailer park. lol Something about him in front of a fire as a normal guy, especially with that country twang, just made it more entertaining and fun than if he was dressed up like those old horror hosts. And you described to a T all the reasons I loved him as a host! :)
I remember growing up with this and this is a great tribute. Joe Bob was great, I can still recall rushing into my room every night it came on with a bowl of Popcorn and a Coke, having a seat ready in front of the television. As the last show of the night would begin to fade to black I would already be anticipating the lightning lit test tubes and beakers, the MonsterVision sign and good ol' Joe Bob in his fold up chair sipping and beer and waiting on you to get the marathon started. Good times.
I was never exposed to monster vision, but that Joe Bob guy does seem entertaining, and you've obviously got the whole 'hill william' hill billy thing going on, meaning that he is actually more intelligent and articulate than the whole trailer park vibe would have you believe. However I don't know if I would have liked a tally before my horror movies...it takes away from the surprise, and if I was told that I should be seeing 10 breasts but they were censored...I'd be p*ssed off...
awesome tribute!!! I remember watching this when i was ten and I would stay up late all by myself and watch these movies..they would scare the crap outta me..my parents would wake up the next day with popcorn, chips, and ice cream all over the place like there had been a party but nope it was just me lol..I miss monstervision!!!!!

Eventually, years later we received the Latin American versions of those channels. Though we have always had the Latin American version of TNT, which is different to the original one at the US.
marathons like Monstervision are perfect for late night sprees. I wish more stuff like that were around. Ditto with people asking for James to host a monster show, I would start watching TV again if that happened.
I saw Joe Bob at a B-Movie Festival in town. Friday Night I walked right past him and knew somthing was faimliar about him. It wasn't till Saturday night when they were showing Killer Klowns from Outer Space he came up on stage of the theater and gave the Drive In Total for the movie and it was a really long total. that's when I knew he was familar but I didn't know for sure till rewatching this movie. I had a notion to joke "did you ever get part 4?" but it was too late. Maybe next year.
8:45: "Since then, with the abundance of DVDs and the ability to find out about movies through the internet, we're no longer dependent on television."
And in a way that's a little sad. When things aired on TV they made you feel as if you were part of some secret community, sharing an experience with others somewhere out there. It's just not the same with the internet, with everything so fractionalized, everything existing in its own context-free vacuum.
Every Saturday for me is Svengoolie, idk if it's played around the U.S. but every Saturday, it's another horror movie, and it's awesome. P.S. I live in Chicago.
I remember watching night of the living dead on this when i was like 5 or 6 or something. lol. curled up between my parents to scared to turn off the tv.
have you seen the Saw films. ive heard em to be really REALLY good splatter films, but i havent seen em cuz i cant find em. but i wanna but if you dont know em you should check em out if you see them
TnT Monster Vision and USA up all night its rival were awesome. Only problem with USA up all night was the host Gilbert Godfrey. Never cared for him, but the shows, movies they aired were good.
@videomakerman1232 Dude, was the best decade ever. I mean, everything was so new. Somehow, 90's were meant to be the decade of the revolution of what the 80's were. 80's were about colors and fashion, money and shallowness, pop and success. 90's were about sincerity and minimalism. If a stereo system was silvering in the 80's, in the 90's it became black. 80's had new wave. 90's had grunge. I bet that my childhood in 90's was happier than the childhood of today kids. The 90's rulz!!!!
Man, Monster Vision was the best! Between that and MST3K, I was given an amazing education in B-Movies growing up. People never seem to remember Joe-Bob or Monster Vision when I talk about it. Glad to find some people who remember how awesome this was!
The one I remember best was this theme night of movies Mark Hamil did after Star Wars. Hilarious! Hahaha
Man that took me back. I loved Monstervision when I was a kid. That Godzilla marathon was pure gold. I got tons of VHS tapes filled with Godzilla movies because of that. Thank you Monstervision!
I used to get all of my monster movies from "Monster's From Space" since I was born as a part of this shitty ass generation. It's where I saw a lot of my favourite Godzilla films though, which kicks ass.
I wish Television itself would make a comeback like this. It's all Dvd/Internet now, and even on television it's all Reality TV/Sit Coms today.
Wow! This was a great tribute. I also had no idea "MonsterVision" had been around since the early-90s. I only discovered it in 1995, I guess shortly after Joe Bob became permanent host. Sure, the movies were edited, but I love it and, since I didn't have any movie channels at the time, it was a great way to discover movies I would have otherwise never seen. It's a shame TNT changed formats in the final year and pushed for more mainstream films. It just wasn't the same as the older fare.
@zero1498 Remember when WPIX-TV used to have horror movies during the month of October? It was called "Shocktober". This was back when channel 11 was "New York's Movie Station".
@Lobstrosity666 Never heard of USA's "Up All Night", it was similar to WOR-TV's "9 All Night" and WCBS-TV's "The Late Show" back in the 1980's. "The Late Show" on WCBS-TV had the best kick-a@@ intro of all time. It had dots flying around with graphics came right out of a Lite-Brite with catchy silent movie music that goes into the main title. That brought back some memories. They also had "The Late, Late Show" as well.
first, holy nostalgia batman! damn i miss the 90's, i never misssed a joe bob monstervision. also, what movie is the clip at 4:16 from? i must see it!
I only watched Monster Vision during Godzilla marathon's (and when The Blob was on). I can personally thank Monster Vision for making me a Godzilla fan.
@kdoggjr You're always welcome! TNT used to have a "Godzilla" marathon as part of "Monstervision". They used aired the Godzilla films back when they were on WOR-TV's "Holiday Movie Special" back in the 1980's as well as on WPIX-TV's "Chiller Theater" and WABC-TV's "4:30 Movie" back in the 1970's.
I think I'm much better off for watching things like Monstervision when I was a kid.It means I don't ever come up with some completely idiotic reason to not enjoy a movie, like 99 percent of every self proclaimed movie "fan" tends to do, amateur or not.Such as, "This movie isn't realistic enough!!!", or anything as nonsense filled as that statement.
I disagree. I wasn't very old when it disappeared but I own some tapes with MonsterVision on them and only the REALLY nasty scenes are censored. I still recall seeing decapitations, exploding heads, and eye-gouging scenes that were quite brutal and to my knowledge uncensored. I'm not trying to be an asshole, I'm just saying that the censors weren't as harsh about graphic violence as they were profanity and nudity. Nice job though and sorry I had to share my two cents.
I heard a rumor that Joe Bob was going to host a new version of Monstervision on the TV station Horrornet. I don't know if it's true, but if it is I would SOO watch it.
"It was better when they were showing older, black and white, movies because [they were better movies that did not need gore to get people to watch them/carry the story]. Now the only point of watching Monster Vision wasn't for the movies [which were glaringly bad without gore for the fanboys] but for Jo Bob."
It's somewhat depressing that MonsterVision, and other cool marathons have been removed from TV. However, the internet has so much potential; it can easily adopt the concept in a fresher format, where there would be a live showing over the internet hosted by some internet personality where the audience can talk to each other over chat. Damn, that's not a bad idea. AVGN, you have been summoned!
they need to bring back monstervision and put it on FX or AMC where they can say shit and be a bit more liberal with the violence. don't change a single thing with the format, just loosen the censoring.
Holy shit watching some of those promos brings back memories. Joe bob was great thou, and i remember some hot girl on there like a mailgirl or something. drive in totals were good too.
I think they should bring back the classic MosterVision and have it hosted by none other than James himself. How fucking awesome would that be? The only person that I have ever seen that would be a worthy successor to Joe Bob.
man i misss this i watched this but i didnt have to get scared if my parents were gana catch me awake they worked late nights lol but man me and my sis would watch dis id give my life to be doin this now
I would have loved Monstervision as a kid, would have totally geeked out over it. Gutted, I live in the UK and to my knowledge, we didn't get Monstervision.
That's what I love about AVGN, he's a true nerd to the core. Loved this vid.
Well TV,DVD,CD,VHS,Analog,Laserdisc,BETA,and yes a good"bootlleg"cannot compare to "B-Movie"Friday.Except for Off Beat Cinema on which you'll have to stay up till 'fore day in the mornin' to enjoy good stuff on TV JOE-BOB.....Please come back so we can relive early nights,And I won't even channel-surf TNT go back, goback, GO BACK
Ok James the fact that you know about Joe Bob Briggs gives you some bad mother fucker cool factor. I might have to start Briggs style tally counting AVGN videos.
My mom recorded a few (and enire VHS Tape) of the Godzilla movies from Monstervision marathon. When I was younger (like 5ish) I watched that VHS everyday till the DVD came out. Then I still watched the VHS until I had Internet. AND EVEN THEN I still watched that VHS tape. Then my mom got tired of me watching that same Godzilla Marathon every weekend and she just bought all of the DVD's and now that tape sits quietly under my bed with the Toy Story VHS.....good times....
@akiraman26 Same thing happened when all three of their independent TV stations such as WPIX-TV, WWOR-TV and WNYW-TV gave up the movie series and replaced with network programming including Fox, CW and My Network. That sucks! RIP: WOR-TV's "Fright Night" and "Holiday Movie Special". RIP: WPIX-TV's "Chiller Theater" and "8:00 Movie". And RIP: WNEW-TV's "Creature Features" and "Drive-In Movie".
Damn. I thought Joe Bob started hosting way before '95. My memory isn't very reliable.

I think they should bring back the classic MosterVision and have it hosted by none other than James himself. How fucking awesome would that be? The only person that I have ever seen that would be a worthy successor to Joe Bob.

I would have loved Monstervision as a kid, would have totally geeked out over it. Gutted, I live in the UK and to my knowledge, we didn't get Monstervision.
That's what I love about AVGN, he's a true nerd to the core. Loved this vid.

Can I buy some of the VHS tapes?
YmamAx3 1 year ago
My mom recorded a few (and enire VHS Tape) of the Godzilla movies from Monstervision marathon. When I was younger (like 5ish) I watched that VHS everyday till the DVD came out. Then I still watched the VHS until I had Internet. AND EVEN THEN I still watched that VHS tape. Then my mom got tired of me watching that same Godzilla Marathon every weekend and she just bought all of the DVD's and now that tape sits quietly under my bed with the Toy Story VHS.....good times....

akiraman26 1 year ago
@akiraman26 Same thing happened when all three of their independent TV stations such as WPIX-TV, WWOR-TV and WNYW-TV gave up the movie series and replaced with network programming including Fox, CW and My Network. That sucks! RIP: WOR-TV's "Fright Night" and "Holiday Movie Special". RIP: WPIX-TV's "Chiller Theater" and "8:00 Movie". And RIP: WNEW-TV's "Creature Features" and "Drive-In Movie".
