I have a picture from 1964-5 of a Dodge pickup truck at the drag strip with a 426 Hemi (racing version at the time) dropped in the sucker kicking the pants out of a Ford Thunderbolt. It was a shop truck, I have loved them ever since I saw it.

@Boredout454 I doubt that!! To see a 3200lb 500+ hp 11sec. factory race car get whooped up on by 5000+lb truck shop truck is hard to imagine. Chrysler had some very sick cars back than and was never an easy task to take out a Thunderbolt.

And the Thunderbolts while fast where a dissapointment because of there weight and size racing against much smaller and faster aluminum nosed Max Wedge's and the new Hemi in the 64-65 Belvedere/Fury

@Boredout454 Really how do you figure the wedges are smaller and faster both cars weigh in right at 3200lbs which was the lightest weight allowed for there class. The Wedge Ramchargers where actually slower than the Tbolts. Thats why Chrysler built the hemi!! Im not saying that ford is better that mopar I like them both I just don't see a truck working over these cars that were the best of the best back than.

@farmsled Oh bud, dont get me wrong they where fast and I love the Thunderbolts although I am a Mopar fanatic. But no Mopar didnt build the Hemi for drag racing but built it for NASCAR. The RamChargers actually held most the records for there classes and dominated the class.However the aluminum nosed max wedges (aluminum fenders and hoods from the factory ) where smaller and lighter weight in the stock class then the thunderbolts.I know this because my grandfather raced the thunderbolt

@farmsled He switched to the aluminum nosed max wedges in 64-65. In fact if you watch interviews with the older guys many of them switched from Ford to Mopar during then because Ford continued to try and make it work instead of making a smaller car. They eventually did in 65-66? With the Fairlane? But by then the Hemi came out and the racers like Dick Landy, Mr Norm, Gene Snow and thousand others put them into drag cars and started going hard.

very cool truck, I had a 71 short box dodge pickup with a 383 in it. There was a burnout competion in my town at a car show and I smoked the tires till they blew up.I use to street race it and theres nothing funnier then an old dodge pickup spanking a camaro,vett or mustang.

I love comments like these on Youtube! Doesn't leave much hope for the planet though. But they are hilarious. Yes a burn-out is a pointless waist and polution. But it's fun. Same thing with camp-fires. Nobody blame them. Anyway, if the truck is heavy enough and the tires and the surface i slippery enough, and the engine have enough torque it should be possible to make it hold still, and still burn up the tires. But mostly it will move forward. After all that is what it is designed to do!

AWD or RWD. doesnt mean anything. in races such as off road. i forget the style but AWD handles the best because it needs the extra traction control where as drag and street circuit racing is best for RWD because of the less weight and other things of the sort. but a cars a ar in my opinion. if it goes fast be happy. but i do luv my muscles way more and would choose them any day of the week
