How is the bell on this steam locomotive rung? It isn't done by a human hand, and seems to ring "automatically" whenever the engine is moving, forward or reverse. I love the seam billowing our of the pistons! Thanks for a great video.
It actually is done by human hands: there's a cord that stretches from the cab of the locomotive to an arm on the bell assembly. You can see the arm if you look really close at about 0:26. As for the bell ringing every time the train's in motion, IIRC, Federal Law requires that a locomotive ring its bell every time it's in motion in either a rail yard or passing a passenger platform.
when did they have the wire reattached to the bell. last time i was there, it was done like a diesel loco.
