this kinda shrimp spit some chemical compounds that starts a bioluminescent reaction. He does that to escape from predators...just like batman would do to blind his enemies and attack (or escape from) ...
Dude, wtf? Is no one else here astaunded by this creature? Where can I get one? What kind of chemical does it release that gives off a fluorescent reflective color? If anyone has additional information please advise me of it.
All I know is that other animals (such as certain plankton [swirl your hand in the ocean at night and you will see]) use bioluminescence to create the lights. Their bodies produce a certain chemical that reacts with bacteria in the water (or in the fish, such is the case with the angler fish) that causes it to light up. It has various purposes, such as attracting prey, mates, or in this case, it appears to be a defense mechanism. Although I don't understand how it really defends it. Camouflage?
As far as I can tell Japanese TV is awesome. I always wanted a reaction shot super imposed into the corner of something like shrimp defense. Thanks Japan!
My penis does that in the hot tub when I'm with your mom.

Wikipedia bioluminescence.

Not camo. More likely to blind/confuse the predator at night or in the deep ocean where the bioluminescent ink would probably be more useful.
