Sodano, who was Ratzinger's superior, basically told Cardinal Ratinger not to touch Maciel. This when on for some months, before Cardinal Ratinzer broke rank with Sodano and went ahead on his own with an investigation, and that led to Maciel being removed from active ministry.

Ratzinger wanted to act on the accusations, to discover the truth, and Cardinal Sodano prevented him- up to the point that Ratzinger got fed up with Sodanos antics and went ahead with an investigation on his own! And when he found evidence that the accusations were substantial (not conclusive evidence, mind) he acted as best he could

As I've said, Ratzinger saw what the accusations included, wanted to investigate these claims and discover if they were truthful. Sodano didn't like that idea and stopped him (until, as I keep saying, Ratzinger just ignored Sodano and went ahead on his own).

This is a misleading and one-sided presentation.

Even if some of the accusations of Fr. Maciel are true, it does not make him an evil man, though such acts are immoral. Even people who love God can fall morally to a greater or lesser extent.

What I have a problem with is the documentary putting a subtle- sometimes not so subtle- negative spin on the organizations. I think that if you're doing a real documentary, a more balanced perspective needs to be present with both sides able to speak. It is so sad that these priests get away with victimizing innocent children, raising tons of money to cover up their crimes, and brainwashing women to believe that the priesthood is all powerful and all holy. I think this is a very important documentary about the church's darkest hour. It should be shown in all the major Catholic cities in our country. The footage of the pope blessing the pedophile is most disturbing.
