Nearly all music historians agree that the Eroica shattered all music that had come before it, and nothing could be the same--it expanded the power and structure of the symphonic form. Other revolutionary turning points in musical history: Tristan & Isolde (Wagner)--introduced chromatic chords; Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun (Debussey)--introduced 'impressionism'--and dissolving of 500 years of tonic chords; 2nd string quartet (Schoernburg)--introduced atonalism--the collapse of the chord
The background of this piece adds a new dimension to the movie "The soloist" which I think is pretty amazing from the musician's point of view. It may have been a movie that urged me to look this up but, it's very inspiring
I bought the Eroica for $2.99 in a discount bin at a New York City J&R music world back on 1998 (LSO version by Colin Davis) having never even heard of it before. And I've listened to at least part of nearly everyday since--I still discover bits of it to this day I had noticed before. Interesting footnote to this symphony is that the rehearsals for its first performance led by Beethoven were a disaster -the players just had never seen anything like it before.
THE piece of music that "broke the mold" and is also just so great in it's own right; this communicates something to me as little else does; Beethoven was the greatest.
Folks, all your palaver counts for absolutely nothing.
This is LB's interpretation of a musical composition by the greatest composer who has ever lived. Those guys had no Computers, just a pencil, paper and a piano and their Brain. So forget all this crap we hear now. This music is more than 200 years old, still played now and if the human race is still around in another 200 years then it will still be played then. So don't get your knickers in a twist and enjoy the version you like !!!!!

I love how Beethoven is playing with our sense of time. We go from a clear 3/4 to extended hemiola passages, where the down beat goes missing. It's just one of many examples of Beethoven's brilliance in this piece. Every time I listen to it, it is still exciting!
@rukie01 HIs best work is definitely his 9th symphony; simply because it's more than just music, and it is necessarily the most complete and accurate representation of the human spirit in musical form-- out of all the works of Beethoven, and even out of all the works of all of humanity-- An exaggeration, perhaps; but not in my opinion. Moonlight Sonata comes in a close second. It is so abstract but so eerily good. The 1st Mvt. is simple and melodically empty-- but harmonically so full. So good.
@christopher19894 Those and the fifth are his most popular pieces, but I think that the Eroica is by far his best piece. To me it feels like his most personal symphony.
@rukie01 Nah, on just the piano Beethoven has many works that surpass the Moonlight - the Appassionata, Waldstein and Hammerklavier sonatas to name a few. Let alone when you bring symphonic works, overtures, string quartets, piano concertos into the equation...
@Heretic920 It was going to be but when Napoleon proclaimed himself emperor Beethoven got mad, he instead dedicated it to the memory of a great man. The memory of the Napoleon he supported before Napoleon did what Beethoven thought was a betrayal.
That part beginning at 7:50 and then transitioning at 8:38 to the next theme is mind blowing. No wonder many say this symphony ushered in the romantic era.
Magnificent Eroica, 3rd Sym (1/5), 1st Mvt. is conducted & performed by exceptionally gifted, privileged musicians...Awesome!! Does justice to Adorable, Beautiful, God-like, Genius & Giant Ludwig van Beethoven...thank you very kindly for sharing...!!
this is my favorite symphony ever!!! Have you heard the 2nd movement?? Every single time i hear it, it makes me tear up. Pure genius. Amazing, even if someone who could hear, this is insanely impressive, and just beautiful. But someone who is deaf? Seems impossible. This is way better than any rihanna, it is not garbage at all. So relaxing, and has a lot of suspense. I love the way the change it to minor from major. And just LOVE the violins and viola's part.
@nogveelove Beethoven wasn't totally deaf,he just had the worst case of Tinnitus, probably on record , possibly from the lesions on his eardrums. But I know what he went thru for 30 yrs.I once attended a heavy metal concert in front of the speakers and had ringing in my ears and echos for 5 days,i cant imagine all his life..No wonder he was a prick of a guy.
Without doubt, this symphony and this movement is absolute the best Beethoven has ever written. I have heard this work 100 times and I never get tired of listening to it. The 5th and 9th symphonies are also very good but doesn't match this work. After my opinion the best classical work ever written in history besides Mozarts 21. piano concerto.
@rkj1963 Ludwig eats Mozart for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Not even close! This guy was the greatest of ALL TIME as a composer/musician/pianist. He bridged classical with Romanticism. The romantic period was the foundation of love songs today! Beethoven was the best,is the best and most likely(judging todays shit like justin bieber and lady gaga) the best there ever will be.End of story.
we're having a beethoven/mozart concert at my school this weekend and the orchestra is going this piece and we're singing mozart's requiem mass. my professor told us to take a listen to beethoven's symphony and i realized after listening to this that i already heard it while watching anime. go figure! xD
Around this time (1805) Beethoven already had significant hearing loss, a tragedy that led him to being more and more withdrawn and suicidal, but he also engrossed himself in his music creating wild and dynamic music becoming one of if not the greatest composer to ever live, rather bittersweet.

@NoXAdmiral ok, great. How do you know that it has a fair representation of history. I've got a movie produced by anti-vaccers, but I know its all a pile of shit. just because you can produce a documentary, doesn't mean its accurate.
And the reason I accept that he probably was deaf was because of the work of David Hume. Essentially, what is is more miraculous, that a great number of learned people would be conspiring to lie to the public or be deceived themselves, or that a few are wrong?
@NoXAdmiral Hey, everyone look! Its the asshole himself! You(NoXAdmiral) do understand that even though you think your better, there are more of us than you. Your gonna get flamed till you just plain leave youtube, ass wipe.
@NoXAdmiral Garbage*, And*, He's*, Don't* You*, Yourself*. I suggest you take some spelling and grammar lessons. They'll do wonders when you start to look for a job. You do also realize that you have no proof to back up your argument, right? Do some reading and get a job you pathetic excuse for a human.
@NoXAdmiral Just accept that you've lost. Theres no point in arguing if you clearly are wrong , and everyone else is against you. Also, you're insults are getting lamer. Your stupidity isn't entertaining anymore.
@NoXAdmiral You obviously have a baby sized penis and no perception of what good music really is. Also, if you really hate Beethoven THAT much, why do you purposely listen to his music. Don't even try and make the excuse that you accidentally got here, cause thats bullshit.
I'm such a Bernstein fanboy, which is something peculiarly odd to say about a man notorious for his homosexuality..... none the less, this recording vastly superior to the esteemed Karajan and really anybody else I can think of. Bernstein's interpretation of Beethoven and especially Brahms and Mahler... phenomenal.
@TehPythagorean haha i think you are 'insufficiently intelligent' hahhahhahahah was that supposed to make you sound 'sufficiently sophisticated'? hhahahhahaha
I am very open-minded to music,I honestly love it <3. My musical taste goes all the way to Beethoven and all the classics to the recent music like techno and such. I can guarantee that every single genre there is on this earth I will enjoy one song at the least.
@lindzyIsAwesome My comment wasn't to Beethoven. It was to music in general, as the previous poster said "all the way back to Beethoven." Imagine listening to Epitaph of Seikolos. I said 1700's also because I was referencing the century Beethoven started in. This "Eroica" was also written in 1801. :)
Such emotional turbulence, such suffering and misery...this man was of such calibre that he channeled his torment into masterpieces, revolutionizing the entire musical scene in a short space of time, bridging two musical periods with his passion.
A fight between a bunch of holier than thou self proclaimed "intellectuals" and a few ignorant people who couldn't tell you what music was if they were slapped across the face by a book full of musical notes. Then, there is the occasional comment by the stereotypical band nerd. Finally a few people who take pride in that whole "behind the music" thing discussing the whole history of the symphony. This is the most interesting comment thread I've seen in a while.
Where to start? I suppose you meant to type, "listening." I doubt you're doing much of that, but the title does tell you what you're hearing. I also assume you meant to type, "garbage." If this assumption is justified, your claim is rather nonsensical, isn’t it, as garbage doesn't have a sound per se? And this music surely can’t look like garbage either… That is all. :)

@daemonowner i saw the documentary on the history channel. how do you know your history is the right one?
NoXAdmiral 11 months ago
@NoXAdmiral ok, great. How do you know that it has a fair representation of history. I've got a movie produced by anti-vaccers, but I know its all a pile of shit. just because you can produce a documentary, doesn't mean its accurate.
And the reason I accept that he probably was deaf was because of the work of David Hume. Essentially, what is is more miraculous, that a great number of learned people would be conspiring to lie to the public or be deceived themselves, or that a few are wrong?
daemonowner 11 months ago
@NoXAdmiral Hey, everyone look! Its the asshole himself! You(NoXAdmiral) do understand that even though you think your better, there are more of us than you. Your gonna get flamed till you just plain leave youtube, ass wipe.

@NoXAdmiral Have fun with Lil Wayne, dick.
hellyeahauntlaaauren 11 months ago
@NoXAdmiral You obviously have a baby sized penis and no perception of what good music really is. Also, if you really hate Beethoven THAT much, why do you purposely listen to his music. Don't even try and make the excuse that you accidentally got here, cause thats bullshit.
choonaga 11 months ago
@stevenkonasr

I'm such a Bernstein fanboy, which is something peculiarly odd to say about a man notorious for his homosexuality..... none the less, this recording vastly superior to the esteemed Karajan and really anybody else I can think of. Bernstein's interpretation of Beethoven and especially Brahms and Mahler... phenomenal.
AFallingCrate 1 year ago
@AFallingCrate I prefer Karajan's; it sounds more heroic/fiery to me.
Nuker1337 1 year ago
This is so beauty and powerful: Quartets, Trios, Concertos, Sonatas, Symphonies... Beethoven´s music is Academy Awards quality.

I am very open-minded to music,I honestly love it <3. My musical taste goes all the way to Beethoven and all the classics to the recent music like techno and such. I can guarantee that every single genre there is on this earth I will enjoy one song at the least.

@mitsuki3322 Thankyou. That is the correct opinion completely. Good on you. :)
LukasP369 10 months ago
@mitsuki3322 Why did you say all the way to Beethoven. This was only 1700's. Music goes back WAYYYYYYYY earlier than this!
Lickthecloth 8 months ago
@Lickthecloth this was written more like in the early 1800's, you're right though
lindzyIsAwesome 7 months ago in playlist ART MUSIC PART 5: ROMANTIC ERA
@lindzyIsAwesome My comment wasn't to Beethoven. It was to music in general, as the previous poster said "all the way back to Beethoven." Imagine listening to Epitaph of Seikolos. I said 1700's also because I was referencing the century Beethoven started in. This "Eroica" was also written in 1801. :)

An inspired individual.
Music was never the same again.
Such emotional turbulence, such suffering and misery...this man was of such calibre that he channeled his torment into masterpieces, revolutionizing the entire musical scene in a short space of time, bridging two musical periods with his passion.
What purpose does this music serve today?

@NoXAdmiral If you don't hear this as anything more than a series of sounds, then you are an animal. That's it. You're no better than a dog.

This is the most interesting comment thread I've seen in a while.

wtf am i listing to??! sound like gargage to me...
NoXAdmiral 1 year ago
@NoXAdmiral
