It's things like this video that make me wonder, who can look at the utter beauty and mystery of our universe and our lives and say to themselves, "Perhaps a burning bush, a midnight ride on a flying horse or an image of Mother Mary on a piece of toast would give my life more meaning."
Such a wicked fish :). Looks like the watchmen mask lol! Also where the he'll is it's eyes then? And I just watched it today. It's funny how the have sex rofl.
yeah, its the craziest of all cuttlefish.. tiny.. and the fact it walks on all fours. anyone else see the documentary on them? i can't remember what it was on, but they think that perhaps it walks on all fours to emulate or mock something else thats bigger and badder that dwells the bottom of the ocean. its not too hard to believe especially since they can change colour to adapt to their surroundings.. they are so impressive.
Truly wonderful creature... very lovely... i've had around 15 dives already in malaysia... but i have never seen this wonderful creature in my dives... i definately have to explore more dive sites in the future!!! its truly amazing!!!
cuttlefish and octopus almost always end up living for only a few months in most reef tanks, and if they ink even once your corals are screwed. if these things were sold, they'd have such a high price tag it wouldnt be worth it. just sayin.
I've seen these on Descovery World. they're amaizing creatures. their whole body is poisinous, the only spicies of the cuttelfish known to be poisinous. sadly they ddie shortly after laying their eggs (they lay about 100 eggs). Also they can hardly swim, they mostly walk along the ocean floor. We have such amaizing things living all around us. Pitty how some take advantage of our beautiful planet and its inhabitants.
They are very hard to get in saltwater trade. Their lifespans are also very short. Not more than 1 year, usually and the life support systems needed for them are very touchy.
Probably better to spend the cash on getting SCUBA certified and seeing these guys in the wild. They are amazing.
I think you need to check your eyes it's using those color abilities to not just change but create those flashing neon waves of light all over it. Cuttlefish are advanced in the color change department. They use their ability to hypnotize their prey into submission. I don't think either the octopus or the squid use it for anything more than defense.
umm yeah no, it does this when its looking for a mate. when i catches prey it just uses camouflage.
L1Blackjack..... they do, but not like the regular cuttlefish. these actually change in to bright colors to show off to to other males. and as far as hypnotizing them....NAHH. they just blend to their environment regardless of color. So ur good man. i dnt think people should be dicks just to clarify other peoples thoughts
why would they show off to other males? Granted I admit I was talking about cuttlefish in general when I said they use their flashing colors to hypnotize prey. Theres even a clip of National Geographic documentary on their website of one doing it.
show off to other males to show them dominance...its different when u watch a show on tv and just spit words back out. when you do your own research, and read books about it is different. There area approximately 100 species of cuttlefish in the world, maybe the species that they talked about did that.
But as far as all the research i did for my term paper, the flamboyant cuttle fish is one of the few that will have that zebra stripe look when it is looking for a mate. as well as putting on a show of colors to intimidate other males. Often times they do that when two males are fighting for the same female.
showing off and intimidating are two different concepts. choose your words carefully. And it's not a maybe. The cuttlefish they captured on film did use it's light show to hypnotize prey.
Aww, they're soo cute :) And amazing that they can change the colour like that, I saw one myself when I was diving, probably the most normal race of squids and octopussys, but still though :)
It's in the same class as squid; they are called Cephalopods. They are the smartest [and in my opinion, the best] invertebrates on the planet. Octopus, Squid, and Cuttlefish fall into this category.
When i saw this creature on NOVA, I thought that it was gogint to be as large as it's other relatives, until the scientist guy picked it up. It was so tiny and cute!!! I LOVED IT!!
notice the bypeddle motion of two of its tenticals like its walking across the surface
these are definate signs of a sophisticated brain. these guys are incredible they have the capability to observe their surroundings and within seconds can process the information and control milions of chromataphores on their skin to match their surroundings kind of like how your computer processes information to create images on your monitor.
Yeah they are awesome. Most cuttlefish swim but some only crawl using their tentacles as legs. And most types use their colors as camouflage to hide from predators but one kind (I think this one) is really small but very brightly colored and poisonous :D
My favorite sea critter of all! Very nice vid, great color, light, and focus. I don't think they have a venomous bite, per se, but their flesh contains a very powerful toxin (same as in blue-ringed octopus).
this is really amazing, thank you for the video

Not too much, its saliva is non toxic and its about as big as your thumb. The flesh is poisonous however.

From what I gathered their bites are not poisonous. If you ate one though that's a different story.
