George may have been fat, but he was fastidious. And it wasn't just George, detached observers wrote about how smelly Caroline was (she wasn't UGLY so much as disgusting in her personal habits). There were other barriers to George's first marriage: Catholics were not allowed to marry into the royal family, and certainly not divorced ones of common background. If the marriage was ever recognized it would have removed George from the line of succession and created such a PR disaster that the marriage was never publicly recognized.
