  • I love the "Ooooh" after her split-jump! 2:59

  • By far the best female skater of all time. Kwan at her finest could not match the beautiful positions, stretches, jumps, and connecting moves that Sasha so effortlessly did with exquisite grace.

  • No matter how many times I watched this, I just realized that there's someone yelling "Yay" after her Lutz combo and Flip!

  • @all Kwan lovers. As stated b4, when MK emerged, I thought she was the best thing. But Sasha has clearly trumped her, with this performance and most others. I gave MK another chance and just watched her SP. Almost gagged...subpar choreography & program, stiff posture, she moved fast on the ice, that was the only merit. OPEN YOUR EYES! There's almost no comparison btwn the two. Sasha is better in every single element and she expresses the music much better. That said, not a fan of her Carmen.

  • @oreevas Right on!!! Michelle the Mediocre has nothing on Sasha the Spectacular. Thanks for pointing that out!

  • Cohen may have deserved first in the short, but Kwan beat her, as usual, in the long. Kwan kicked ass b/c she was so often able to put together magnificent long programs, whereas Cohen often fell apart. So, there is no denying that Kwan deserved yet another National title here (despite what getreal/allengland may think).

  • I have no idea how Kwan's mediocre skate placed above this absolutely stunning performance. As for the garbage being passed around about Sasha intentionally "bumping" into others at warmup, why on earth would she do that? As per Scott and friends said in SLC, skaters why would skaters risk injuring themselves at all. Sasha is just pure underrated talent under the shadow of mediocre Kwan and it was clear that blatant Kwan favoritism controlled the outcome of this competition...again.

  • @allenglandlawns Absolutely correct on all counts. Kwan had no business placing first here. Pure Kwan favoritism. Poor Sasha had to work twice as hard just to get recongnition.

  • @HowsaBowsaYowsa Kwan didn't place herself first -- the judges did. Now, jackass, provide the PROOF for your constant libeling of Kwan and judging when it goes her way.

    Or shut up.

  • @HowsaBowsaYowsa That must be why thug-Cohen deliberately disrupted Kwan pre-competition warm-ups: effort to get recognition for her poor sportsmanship, as substitute for being able to skate a clean program.

  • @allenglandlawns Why would Cohen intentionally bump into and otherwise disrupt Kwan's -- Kwan's, and no one els's -- warm-ups? Beyond the fact of obvious poor sportsmanship, you would have to ask Cohen why she is such an arrogant and nasty thug. And you have to deal with the fact that other skaters -- including Sarah Hughes -- seeing it, being shocked, and commenting upon it.

It doesn'tt surprise that a thug -- you -- would defend thug Cohen.

  • @allenglandlawns "I have no idea" -- the first honest comment you've made.

But that doesn't stop you from making up shit based upon your bottomless ugly hatred of all things Kwan.

Still, we can't hear you. You're drowned out by the countless spontaneous standing ovations given Kwan, even at her practice sessions.

  • Sasha's presentation marks should have been straight 6.0s. Absolutely perfect and poetry in motion. Her technicals marks were too low as well but for sure her artistry was incredible. If the judges can justify 'not leaving room' due to Kwan's absolute lock for this Gold it just screams "pre determined'. Could it be any more blatant.

  • @getrealandsee Even on threads which have nothing to do with Kwan you expose your stalker's hateful obesssion with Kwan by not being able to prevent yourself libeling those you don't know: Kwan, and judges who award her wins.

Again, sleaze: the first person harmed by your obsessive hatred is YOU.

  • You could make a good case here that Sasha should have won the short, but Kwan skated well too.

  • GO SASHA COHEN!

  • This was worth so much for than her scores indicate but Kwan favoritism robbed Sasha and the rest of the field their due credit. Kwan couldn't even skate like this even in her wildest dreams.

  • Oh Sasha, you didn't stand a chance here with the favortism and pre determined gold for Kwan...you truly do set HIGH standards for yourself and figure skating but the propping up and fawning over Kwan made it impossible for you to be given the credit you SO deserve...it's sad that you skated during the era of the 'hang on and on and on and on' Kwan:(

Dick Button was right.this was the BEST short program ever seen at Nats!

Brilliant, beautiful, and perfect.but Kwannie had to Winnie the Goldie

  • Judge No. 6 was the only one who had no Kwan bias and saw Sasha for the talented beauty that she is. Technically and artistically superior to Kwan.

  • brilliant!!!!!!!

  • I'm looking for Sasha's Sentimental Waltz WITHOUT COMMENTARY please!?!?!? I would do ANYTHING for a channel without commentary.

  • What's so good about Kwan?

  • @rangerma5 I think if the new scoring system was used in this time, sasha could have been first since she has better spirals and spins. i just think that kwan was not good enough to be number one compared to sasha

  • @mathew03bh ITA but kwan had the gold going in before she lumbered onto the ice. kwan was so propped up and held up that no one had a chance unless kwan fell and even then it was questionable. So many skaters didn't get the recognition they deserved because of this mediocre skater. That would be Kwan, not Sasha.

  • @getrealandsee Sasha should have won the short program here. I think that Michelle's '98 Rach was a masterpiece, but she watered down the choreography for her 2002 version. It just didn't have the same impact. Sasha gave a great performance. I still think that Michelle deserved to win the LP, though. Sasha's jumps were too shaky in her LP. Once again, Michelle was never as "propped up" as you state that she was. The judges would have had her win the Olympics if they truly wanted (think of '94).

  • @getrealandsee And Michelle was far from "mediocre". Keep telling yourself that. Why do you watch Michelle so much if you think that she's so "mediocre"???

  • Классно катается! Но на мой взгляд не очень музыкально... А техника потрясная!!!))) Даже на сегоднешний день)

  • sigh.. if we could only combine her natural talent with kwan's championship mentality....

  • As far as I can tell, all the top American women had a flutz at the time. Michelle's came at the very last split second, whereas Sarah's was obvious. I think the placements were right here. The top four all skated so clean and nice, you have to make nitpicky distinctions to rank them.

  • She has a bad flutz. I'm surprised Dick didn't call her on it. But all in all, a beautiful program. Her best, in my opinion.

  • the best short pgogram she ever did. technically just a flutz but the rest was near perfetion. I think she skated better than Kwan but Kwan had the titles and Cohen no. It changed all for me

  • I can't believe some of the judges placed her as low as fourth! Ridiculous! Her technical merit was worth far more than 5.5; I didn't see a single mistake in her jumps or landings, and her spins and leaps are second to none.

  • of course. They just wanted to make sure that Michelle won no matter what so she could go toe the olympics as national chapmion.

  • She has a bad flutz and her circular footwork pattern was rather small. Remember penalyzing wrong edges was hit or miss back then. Some judges did it, some didn't. In this case, some judges decided to penalize it. She could have been lower if all the judges decided to call it a flip and count it as a repeated element. Have to be careful with those Mohawk entrances :P

  • @GoBogi Yes if the judge would have penalized it she would've placed lower, but I think it wouldn't have made a difference since her marks were unfair to begin with. As far as technical 5.5 is too low for her standards. Presentation? Too many 5.7s...But of course like tinymavy said the judges wouldn't stand if Michelle didn't go to Salt Lake as national champion. Putting Sasha in 2nd is unfair enough, putting her in 3rd....

  • Omg that was beautiful :]

  • She is so elegant and beautiful!

  • Everything she does is perfect... it's amazing... I mean i cant get over it.

  • She really is incredible when she's on.

  • hot

  • oh yes, she's really breath- taking

  • who composes this song??

  • Eugen Dogan, a famous composer from Moldova. :)

  • do you know where i can download it from

  • I was so mesmerized the first time I saw this program, but watching it back again, that circular footwork was way too simple. She more or less just skated in a circle and added a few jumps (which are added elements and doesn't count towards the footwork).

I think her footwork going into the triple flip was more difficult than her circular at the end, lol.

But still, what a performance. She deserved 5.9's for presentation!!

  • Take into account that figure skating has become way more difficult now. The footwork difficulty was more than enough at that time, nowadays is too simple.

  • i love Sasha . great music !!!

    a very beautiful program !!!

  • Breathtaking!!! And she was robbed, again!

  • she shuda won. noone compares 2 her!

  • Wonderful program. Sasha is so good! =)

  • can anyone send me a copy of this music?

  • i can ;) this beautiful waltz is from the soviet movie "my sweet and tender beast" and is a very popular melody among russian people

you can get the file with this waltz absolutely for free

just send me request on address poikanen03(at)hotmail(dot)com

  • can anyone send me a copy of this music?

  • Lol number 1 but shes the silver queen!

  • A lovely performance, I SO wish she could have produced more of these!

  • give me an example of how she can 'self-destruct'??

  • Watch her performance at the 2004 Marshalls World Cup Challenge.

  • That was a very bad example- she's magnific!

  • she doesnt really self-destruct she just loses concentration, but when your trying for a gold metal, one or two falls can probably count for a self destruction. other than that she is a mangificent skater who has extreme talent.

  • Actually, I had seen the long program, not the short- in which she did lose her focus, but this video was before the 2004 Marshalls.

  • dont forget she was also that she had a lot of pressure when she had to win the junior nationals to go to senior worlds that year. but i dont remember wat year that was i think it was 2000. but the juniors was almost a disaster for her

  • I don't want to hear anymore about Kwan. I am sick and tired of it. I want to enjoy the video without having you ruin it!

  • Where did she get this music from a Russian film My Sweet and Tender Beast by Eugan Doga?

  • You are a russian?

  • No.

I just came across this music by chance while surfing the youtube. Isn't it quite different from what we get on the PBS from NewYork!I also came across some old Gypsy songs from Russian films which are virtually unknown in the West. It is not that I understand what they are saying but tunes are very catchy and that is what I love! They really break the language barrier!

Thanks for responding to my query.

  • I'm sorry if I objected you... I was just surprised that you knew this song.

  • So what if she falls? Figure skating is more than a jumping contest, all of the elite skaters jump, but what Sasha does, no one does it. She's the only one who has the "figure" in the skating. And it's not only about her flexibility, there are many other skaters pretty flexible, but the way Sasha Cohen plays the music (with every fiber of her body), her arms, her positions, her artistry and technique, no one does it anywhere near close to her.

  • Right!

  • How true, how true!

  • Well, well, well...listen to the audience...watch the program..listen to the commentators and then watch the scores...SHE BEAT KWAN but once again Kwannie was held up and stayed in 1st..no wonder people say she OWNS nationals!!! What a rip off!

  • I am just writing it because I think the world should know the name of the man who composed such fantastic music, to which many skate now. BTW Cohen was not the first one to use it but surely one of the best.

  • Just FYI The music is by Moldovian Composer Evgeny Doga and it appeared in Soviet film in 1979 which is usually translated as My Sweet and Tender Beast based on Chekhov's story.

  • ohhhhh I want to see that!!!

  • perhaps her best ever. I Love this music. It is so right for her. I have never seen anybody skate to it beofre or after, so she really owns it. Stunning.

  • This was 6's beyond 6's..both technical and artistic..but KWAN owns Nationals...she was so utterly perfect in this per the commentators that I just don't get it..hopefully, you don't take offense at my replying to you.

  • that may be true but when sasha does a clean program like this she is the best. even if she only does this once.

  • ugh...Sasha Cohen is the most overrated skater ever!!! Did she EVER put two perfect performances together at National's or World's????..that would be NO...So all you Michelle Kwan haters lets not forget that Michelle consistantly put two great short and long programs together.

  • Oh, just because a skater is consistent, does that mean we have to like them? How is Sasha overated, she can do things most skaters are incapable of. And Sasha HAS put 2 clean programs together twice - check out her 2000 Cup Of Russia SP and LP and 2002 Cup Of Russia SP and LP. She hit her boot against the wall but finishes the jump first - double foots and slight wobbles still count as clean.

  • I didn't say you have to like anybody...and OOOH she put two good programs together at Cup of Russia, someone hold me back.Just because she has flexability that other skaters don't have dosen't make her more or less capable, in skating its ALL about having a head for nerves and competition...and poor Sasha, I'm afraid had neither.

  • Well, I proved that she has put 2 clean programs together, so why are you defending yourself? I didn't say that her flexibility makes her better than other skaters, just puts her at a higher advantage. True, she may not be the strongest competitor at times, but posting a comment about how she can't keep it together on a video of a clean program doesn't really prove your point, does it? Still, you're entitled to your opinion too.

  • You are right, I was really responding to another comment. The best place to comment was probably not on this video, as it is her best short program ever.

  • She was 4th at 2000 Cup of Russia behind Slutskaya who won with mistakes, Sokolovo who was 2nd with strong jumps and ridiculous choreography, and Hughes who was 3rd with small mistakes. Are you telling me Sasha had 2 clean programs and still was marked 4th behind all of that?

  • I didnt see Sasha there since the station I saw only showed the top 3.

  • In 2000, people were just starting to hear about her and I guess a lot of hype was still to come. Her moves were quite juvenile at that age too so maybe older skaters got more attention. It happens in lots of competitions: the most hyped get the most attention and most likely to medal. It's a shame but that's life.

  • The only skater who's the most overrated in history, is Kwan! She may have had one great year, reached fame at some point, and then the fame skated for her. How many times I've seen her just step on the ice and immediately the crowd gone wild, then she only circled around the rink, a few jumps and that's it! Full of 6'0s. Many-many skaters better than Kwan were put behind her, not only Sasha.

  • how about you know what ur talking about. i think that many people only want to see good comments about sasha here since this video is of sasha and for no one to be name calling.kwan and sasha are both lovely skaters in their own way and add their own touch to the skating world.

  • How about I this...I do know what I'm talking about. I was responding to skating freak, liriub, who was slamming Michelle Kwan first,so get your facts straight before you start replying to my post.

  • um, Bolero?

  • Do you know how difficult it is to do a jump? Unless you are on top and say it is easy!

  • It's a shame that people have to put Kwan down in order to appreciate Cohen. I love both of them; Cohen was beyond talented, and a beauty on the ice. She just wasn't as consistent as Kwan. I do not think Kwan was overrated at all. There's a reason the audience screamed when she stepped on the ice. She had more than one good year!!! Come on: she had so many emotionally charged, flawless 7 triple programs it's hard to count. Kwan earned her status as a legend, and one can appreciate both.

  • Cohen's biggest problem was not Kwan, Slutskaya, or Arakawa, the women who took all the big titles in the events she was 2nd, 3rd, or 4th. It was Cohen. She had all the skills- spins, spirals, footwork, stunning artistry, to win any event she was in. Maybe not the rep yet needed in 02, but from 03-06 nearly any event was hers for the taking. However she never could put together a perfect competition, it was always wonderful except for that one or two no no. And that was always her undoing.

  • Sasha overrated? Ja-ja. She doesn't have millions of fans, she's not America's Idol, she doesn't have hundreds of golds and 6'0s like Kwan does (most of them undeserved by an add), and if anything most of the times Sasha's been underrated. Her marks were always lower than her presentations, despite her mistakes.

  • Gorgeous! Gorgeous! Gorgeous! Like Sasha herself and all of her presentations. Brilliant! I love this music. :)

  • And her jumps look so EASY here. effortless!

  • this was good here sometimes she puts a little too much fluff into it but this was very good she just needs to take one thing at a time and relax going into the jumps other then tat shes marvelous

  • I don't know what peggy means by saying she can be breath-taking or else she can self-distruct. I have never seen sasha anything other than breathtaking. True, she has had dissipointing falls, but never a disastueos program. for every fall, there is a moment of beautiful; artistry and line.

  • Also. Sasha has many problems to overcome as an athlete and often. She has arrived at many competitions injured, and to make matters worse she still has not learned how to take one element at a time, and focus on being consistant athlete. It also goes to show just how difficult it is to land 6-7 triples constantly, and even greater to do so with out flaw.

  • i heard she's anorexic that's why she can't hold the jump's landings, i think it's ridicuolos... but i don't know... what do you guys think? it can't be, right?

  • ...that's just plain absurd. She's a small woman to begin with, and trains three times a day. Factor in pilates and obvious genetics...you get a that sort of physique.

  • ok! i didn't think she was anorexic either, i mean you need a lot of energy to do things like landing a perfect triple lutz

  • ...perfect? she doesn't even HAVE a triple lutz, she always takes off the incorrect edge. Please learn something about skating before you make your judgements.

  • I'm a Michelle Kwan fan,i don't think i have ever seen Michelle flutz before so i can recognize a lutz and a flutz, i do know about skating perhaps not as much as you do but lets face that under the old scorying system flutzing wasn't really a big thing!! althou i recognize you're right, Sasha flutzed so many times i just don't wanna say it in a video of her! but w/e!

  • ugh, such an irritating voice...

    nevertheless, brilliant skating

  • love it, she's amazing. 5.7/5.9

  • so why didn't she get first? i know michelle was also very good, but nothing like sasha. Nothing. I don't know why people make such a fuss over that rachmanioff SP of michelle's. Sasha's was too perfect for words... and not ONE 6.0 for presentation!!

  • I agree with you tinymavy, Michelle doesn't even reach Sasha's heels, Sasha's from a different league, but she never became judges' favorite, that's why she has almost never gotten 6'0s, even when she deserved them. Sasha's quality in execution, technique and artistry, no one has!

  • You take away Kwan's jumps and you've got nothing! But unfortunately in this sport it's all about the jumps. The mass hysteria amazes me, I've never seen another skater such as overrated as Kwan, by both the judges and the audience, so they have left on the side of the road many good skaters better than her, but not as good as Sasha of course, 'cause there isn't any.

  • i abosloutely love her dress

  • perfect program. definitely would have been a 5.9/6.0 for me!

  • 5.7/6.0 for me!

  • The music is called "My Sweet and Tender Beast". What a great program, absolutely perfect aside from the flutz. I'd give it 5.9/5.9.

  • i love this music.

  • I love this program, but I was wondering what music she used. What is it called? It is so wonderful and beautiful for a program.

  • She is one of the most amazing and talented skaters... she has a grace and spirit most others don't

  • she's so beautiful on the ice! and she was so young. i can never be like her!
