Absolutely incredible! the golden bear coming out of hibernation classic. He was an absolute joy to watch play, he was a great man as well. I miss watching him play, he was always a crowd favorite.
Looks like Norman should have calmed his ass down after that putt at 17... he was basically running off the green and then pulled off what would be the first of many Norman Choke Jobs
The story goes that at 15, he asked Jackie (his son, on the bag) "What would a 3 do? Jackie responded "Dad, thats too much club" Jack replied "I'm not talking about the club, I'm talking about the score." Thats Jack Nicklaus.
I remember watching this like it was yesterday. One of the greatest moments in any sport. And it happened to one of the classiest sportsman ever. Amazing.
When asked what was the best round of golf he ever played - Sandy Lyle says it was this one (even though he only shot 71). He said it was the most thrilling experience to be in the company of Jack that day - and it stayed with him when he won the Masters just two years later.
Nicklaus has often said that at least 70% of majors are lost by other players and not won. Never was this more true than in 1986 - Seve, Kite, Norman all blew it that year.
Secretariat in 1973. Mickey Lolich in 1968. There are only a few moments like this in a lifetime. I was at a party that day when music was blaring, and I watched this all alone with the sound off. It was magic.
You can rest easy. Jacks competition was probably better(Palmer, Gary Player,Lee Trevino,Tom Watson,Ray Floyd,Johnny Miller,Seve, Greg Norman to name the most obvious) All champions. The courses that Tiger played may be longer(I dont know for sure) but thats only because the modern ball flies 40 yards farther than in Jacks day. The better husband and father doesnt have to come into it. Jack was an unbelievably good sportsman who couldnt have behaved badly if he had tried.Pure class.

@fevolashow25 I'll second this. Mr. Nicklaus once said "There's more good players today. There were more great players in my day." I agree with that to a tee. Everyone you mentioned won majors, and in all but one case, multiple. This isn't a shot at the Tour of the this generation, but even with Tiger's dominance dwindling, we're going to see a lot of one-major winners, or guys who win six or seven Tour events without a major crown.
@NosConsurgo He sure did, but I've gotta offer it was destiny for Mr. Nicklaus to win. Ballesteros hit a terrible shot on 15, Kite contended up until late, and there was no reason whatsoever for Norman to bogey 18 from the fairway, certainly not after birdieing 17.
I think I have watched this clip 15 times now and it is still inspiring..Seve, Norman, Watson, all great players but this is the most exciting, emotional moment I have seen in golf..they say they never come back..Jack is the exception!
This was the most thrilling sports moment that I've ever watched. Fans admire Woods' skill but they loved Jack because he was a great man, unlike Tiger.
On the 25th anniversary of his remarkable accomplishment and the one that cemented his status as the greatest player in the history of golf (sorry Tiger, you're not there yet...) I say...
Well done, Jack Nicklaus. Well done, and well played...
@willypdyer Tiger is arguably the best golfer ever and WILL beat Jack's record. Tigers biggest flaw is he likes pussy. You know what though, most men would have done the same thing if they had the money, fame and power that Woods has.
@zippy476 Looks like Tiger came up short again... Nice rally, but once again, Tiger cannot come from behind on the final day like Nicklaus did again and again when a major was on the line. Tiger is a pure front runner and Nicklaus won from both the front and coming from behind, plus his numerous 2nd, 3rd and 4th place finishes in his career. There is simply no argument who the Best Golfer of All time is... Jack Nicklaus!
@zippy476 i prefer them from Greenwich, less trashy than Suffolk County, or the Peconic area socialites. And you have to admit, with as much money as Woods has/had, he could at least pull something better than what Joe Francis can get from the FL panhandle..
Still gives me chills after all these years. Incredible run on the back 9, and almost had a 29 as his great putt on 18 was just inches short. A class act, Jack was and still is.
SEVEN under on the last 10 holes - WITH a bogey in there? Incredible. Birdie, Birdie, Birdie, Bogey, Birdie, Par, Eagle, Birdie, Birdie, Par.
You may want to argue that Tiger is a better player, has done incredible things against better competition on tougher and longer courses... but I know which of the two is a better man. A better Husband and a better father. That's a pretty great tie-breaker.

@usa1950 Tiger has had MUCH better equipment with which to attack those tougher longer courses....Given the same equipment at the same age, Jack wins more tournaments than Tiger over the long haul....Don't be afraid to say it....Jack was a better person AND a better golfer....
This will never get old! This was my first memory of GOLF in general. I was soo excited, yet I had noo idea what the heck golf was. I'm glad I started the game when I got older. It's such a great game.
I can`t wait to play again, I have a great life with a Norweigian wife, it pains me to see Agusta come and go, to walk on short green grass rather than snow, oh how I wait for the Midnight Sun to glow and I can play past 11 pm you know.
I have a feeling we'll be seeing some of these highlights come next week, as this is the 25th anniversary of Nicklaus' last - and greatest - major victory. Still sends chills up the spine and brings tears to the eyes. And had Tom Watson been able to make par on 18 at Turnberry two years ago, it would only have been the equal of Jack's accomplishment. And no slight is meant to Watson, one of the great players ever. And his 1977 victory at Turnberry, over Jack, was simply riveting stuff.
The back 9 "heard around the world". Quite possibly one of the greatest stretches of golf ever. If Tom Watson had done the business at Turnberry in 2010 it would have been on a par with this. I remember watching this live, and it still inspires today. Nicklaus proving form is temporary, but class is permanent. Take note Mr Woods, you still have a long way to go.
Not sure if anyone knows this but the guy who says "yes sir!" when Jack made his eagle putt on 15 is Ben Wright...I saw an interview with him last year where he said he was upset that Verne Lundquist also used that line when Jack made his birdie on 17...Wright felt Lundquist stole the line from him...
@wow13d I saw that interview, too. I don't know how I felt about it. I always liked Ben Wright, but, they were two holes apart doing live television. Would Ben's line have been more famous?.....I think it was a bit petty by Ben Wright, but either way, Verne redeemed (or proved) himself with "IN YOUR LIFE!?!?"
@supergunner07 The farthest Tiger had to climb back to win a tournament was 3 back and in the 01 U.S. Open and he had birdie to force a playoff. He did that once moron. Jack fought his way back from to the US, British, PGA and the Masters a total of 15 times. By the way I was there and saw Tiger at Augusta in 97. Have u ever seen Tiger play. I'd take that as a no!!
@codeking32 - Whats with all the hostility?! Geez, just because you seen Tiger play does not make you an expert at golf critiquing; in fact seeing him play means nothing! Furthermore, Tiger has not had to 'come from behind' because he normally had the lead by 5 or more in most of his 71 wins. Codeking32, you're not a nice person.
@TheWBarry : I'm getting tired of people like u always saying somehing negative every time I make a commet about something. By the way Tiger has played from behind a number of times to win tournaments and I maybe not a nice person but I'm honest. As far as I'm concerned Tigrer will never surpass Jack.

Because of his problems and and the new guns on the scene, I think it will take a miracle for Tiger to surpass Jack.

And while you at it talking about comeback, doesnt that 8 comebacks out of 18 Majors depict Nicklaus playing very well in conjuction with the 54 hole leader backing up to him [so is those comebacks really that unbelievable as you are proclaiming].
