It is actually interesting to see the difference between the 60's version and 22 years later (most of the story is the same, just changed a little in the 80s version)
OMG! What a horrible father Tenma is. He was the one that let Tobio drive his little robot car in the first place, and then he turns down Atom just because he's a robot. One of the things I liked about the recent movie, was that Tenma wasn't as bad as a father, and accepts Astro as his son.
@CartoonPrincess same creator- note* in the 80's version Tenma is more realistic in that he makes mistakes and regrets them (Astro runs away when Tenma disowns him for his accidents- he didn't know his own mistake- but then finds himself running around calling out to Toby for forgiveness......)
in the 03 version he actually somewhat of a villain (wtf!?! right?) who later makes amends with Astro
@sayastra Tenma a villain in the 2003 series makes sense if you follow the Manga. There was an arch in the manga where he was kind of a villain. He screws with Astro's programming to make him more vicious and anti-human in hopes it would make him be able to rule the world. It was a short arch but it was there
This is the one plothole that really bothers me. Dr. Tenma shouldn't have been able to legally sell Astro as he was created by the Agency of science. It like the head of NASA selling off a space shuttle.
I guess they did things differently those days, but again I can't help but find it innopriate when they put something cartoony and comical right in the middle of an otherwise serious scene.
I mean,Tenma's proclaiming his rejection for astro Boy (Or should I say Atom?), and then he's comically rolling down the hill and gets smacked with a birds nest full of eggs.
I suppose it's kids show and they don't want it too upsetting, but it 'breaks' the scene somewhat, if you know what i mean.
@MissMysterics if you read or watch anything that Omasu Tezuka has created you know that is what he does.He can swing the story from being too silly and comedic to be taken seriously and then too intense and disturbing to be taken lightly.and yet he makes it all work. One very good example of this is the brilliant Buddah.Theres a fair amount of goofiness to alot of graphic violence and sexuality and it just all works to make a real poignant story which only a genius like Tezuka can create.
@MissMysterics Well, these are pretty much taking Tezuka's comic as a storyboard. I just read it. Some things that work better and fit better with Tezuka's style of comics storytelling is a little jarring in animation because it's so much more continuous.
We need to pick up HamEgg and beat Tenma to death with him. Why does Ochanomizu keep sneezing like that? Does he have a cold? Or is it because he has a big nose?
No, Ochanomizu doesn't have a cold, lol, but if you saw the english dub version he says" I'm Sorry, but, whenever i get mad i sneeze, and this makes me mad", lol
@TheGeekplayer Yep, this whole series is dubbed. It's on my channel if you're interested. It wasn't done in colour though. They actualy did one episode in colour (for some reason), and another episode has the backrounds in colour while the characters are still black and white. But aside from that, it's all black and white.
@TheGeekplayer They did a re-make of the series in the 80's that's in color. The English dub of this original 1960's series is HEAVILY edited b/c the show was considered too serious for children, and too "Japanese"
You'll see what I mean if you watch both versions...
@captainsunder009 I meant watch the 1960's English dubb and compare it to the Original Japanese cartoon from the 1960's... I haven't actually seen the 1980's version, I just know of it.
I'm really glad that Dr. Tenma in the new movie isn't quite the way he was back then. I mean, in the end of the movie, he took him back, but here, he just sold him and left it at that.
Aww, this Tenma is so cruel, the 80's one is nice and the latest one is crazy-weird. Poor Astro, if Tenma wanted him to grow up he should have given him upgrades!
@Dragonrider1227 Mari Shimizu (the person who voices Atom/Astro) is a good voice actress, isn't she? She also voiced Atom/Astro in the 80's color remake too.
GROW UP! Yeah,it's simple stuff,genius! ]:(
He had to give him growth

これは21世紀の話だけど、1960年頃の階級闘争観、差別観、古き良き日本の正義感等々が満載ですね。手塚先生が残してくれた貴重なタイムカプセルです。

This Dr. Tenma woulden't have made a vary good father for Tobio in the first place. He yells and rants and dosen't understand.

It's not Astro Boy's fault that Tenma's too dumb to realize that robots can't grow on their own.
