  • this song is so good it drives me up the walls.

  • is too much good, despite being a woman

  • @glaeken14 whats wrong with being a woman?!

  • @woogonin I am Impressed that do you all that a woman,

    Because MEN usually Do

  • Señoritas, damas del mundo... aprendan algo de esta hermoza y talentosa artiste... Te amo !!!!

  • I don't want to sound too flakey but Suzanne Vega, singing this stunning song with its strange lyrics and great music, seems to be one of those artistes who have some sort of connection to the weird, mystic world that we "mortals" know is out there, but can neither see nor touch! Thanks for trying to share it with me Suzanne. Also, thanks for posting.

  • As SHE records the rise and fall, not THE records the rise and fall.

  • @calmbeforethestory thanks, i've corrected

  • takes me back to being 14 and angst filled. Still adore it though

  • wow, goosebumps!!!

  • such gr8 story telling in the lyrics, unlike many of these ''tap that ass'' songs today, a bit sad 4 kids 2day

  • Comment removed

  • @deviatea You definitely have a good point there. I do not envy the kids of today. But in 'our' time there were some raunchy songs as well. To name a few; Me so horny, I'm horny, I wanna f**k you in the ass,I wanna be your underwear,Baby got back,Thong song.... Didn't bother me then or now. Perhaps nowadays we got more used to it, I don't know...

  • I don't know why, but that song touches me.

  • Amazing song by an amazing artist

  • top tune

  • bought the album in 1985 on vinyl LP been years since heard this 8-)

  • She looks so unexpected all got up like a New Wave Chick.

  • @pmgruhn That was the style back then. LOL

  • Talent never goes out of style.

  • It really pisses me off when I hear people say the 80s was a 'lost decade' for music. What the hell are these people smoking? Yeah there was junk (like there always is) but there was LOTS of brilliant work out there and amazing artists like this.

  • My name is Marlene & I love this song like for sho<&&

  • My name is Marlene & I love this song <&&

  • This is very good.

  • I had 3rd row seats in a small room about a month after this album was released. Great show!

  • Slightly obsessed by this song lately. Maybe reminds me of when I had feelings.

  • This is one of those songs that really has the power to bring back some real memories, visceral and otherwise, good and bad, it's almost like a true nostalgia song. This brings back memories for me of working in the Argos in Sheffield when I first got out of school. Some good little memories there...

  • a timeless classic - so emotive and meaningfull for me personally it allways evokes strong feelings even goosebumps when I hear it and she sings it so beautifully, one of my favorite songs of all time and I am a battle rap/Hip-Hop kind of guy. Peace MC Mitch Isle of Man

  • Suzanne Staya! as had been previously and with discernment expressed a great talent and a favourite of mine since way back love you Suzanne Vega Tom

  • I heard this first while eating roasted cashews in a beach restaurant in Tamil Nadu, India in 1985.

  • another great song ruined by some wanna be director who found a camera in his parents bedroom. The song is great, close ur eyes and listen:-)

  • i actually have a picture of marlene deitrche on my wall!!! lol i love this song it describes my teenage years ha ha ;P

  • I remember having a big crush on her. Yes, I was young, but who could blame me ;-)

Love it, great post and a great song, I'll need to get out that old CD and give it a spin tonight. Cheers!

  • @PhilWithCoffee You weren't alone.

  • Her voice so extremely beautiful, i was kinda disappointed when I saw her face. No face can live up to such a beautiful voice. But the B&W Straight Lines picture of her does her voice justice, she looks like Sissy Spacek.

  • absolutely brilliant. just saw her at Largo in LA. such a talent. it makes me yearn for the days when this kind of sophistication could be heard on mainstream radio.

  • An absolute classic!

  • <33

1.Put your hand on your chest

    2. Name the person that you love 4 times

    3. Put your finger on your nose

    4. Say their name 4 times

Put this on 4 songs and tomorrow they will say i love u, kiss u on the cheek, or ask

    u out<33

  • What a great, great song!!!

  • This is why i prefer music from the past

  • i seen her in glasgow in 1987

  • LOved it then, and I still do 20 years later.......not many songs can do that!!!

  • It's a good song, who is Marlene? Dietrich?

The advice about "Don't give away the goods too soon" is true girls! If you want him to want you, and find out if it's only sex they are after, the only way is make them wait - for 2-3 month at least! Or more! It worked for me... :)

But don't think there is a happily ever after, as even the good guys are not perfect, and neither are you... Keep working on it, and make sure you communicate

"And don't talk about it later"

  • @consolidaregal Yes the Marlene on the wall is a reference to a poster of Marlene Dietrich on a bedroom wall.

  • My Mum made me grow up to Suzanne Vega. It was a proud moment seeing her at Glastonbury Festival in 2008, shes a legend! Great days.

  • Suzanne Vega just rules! amazing songs! Love u!

  • love this song, all her lyrics are really clever, and i love the guitar in the queen and the soldier.

  • ♥♪♫*¨*•.¸¸❤¸¸.•*¨*•♫♪♥¸♥♪♫*¨*• Tune♥♪♫*¨*•.¸¸❤¸¸.•*¨*•♫♪♥¸♥♪♫*¨*•

  • i adore her!!!!!!!!!!

  • I was just listening to the lyrics, and analyzing what it's about. It sounds to me like it's about a woman who can't keep a guy, and goes through guys like she washes her hair. LOL That or she just goes to bed with them and lets that be that.

  • Integrity is the having and steadfastly adhering to moral principles, standards, and/or beliefs regardless of what anyone else says or thinks of you.... Who among you stands steadfast with integrity too?

  • how's this for boycotting.... its the hottest

day of the year and I'm out for a horribly long walk. I ran out of the

water I brought and found that I HAVE to buy some more water to sustain

myself. they only have two bottles..DEER PARK (a liter... exactly what I

need)..and FIJI (only 500ml., higher in price, and not en......ough

for me). I remember DEER PARK is a NESTLE product. well that's that...

FIJI it is! ....Moral of the story... I suppress my own selfishness and stand with integrity!

  • DON'T PLAY APARTHEID ISRAEL!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @kareemahnour

We are welcomed in Israel, artists who succumb to the lies of the media, no APARTHEID Israel.

  • @kareemahnour

Easy to be moral and you're away, it's easy to blame others rather than to test yourself ...

Difficult for you to get it but it's a fact:

Israel exists and will continue to exist.

As soon as your leader will understand this, there will be peace.

But you chose Hamas, which is your real problem and anyone who lives in Gaza knows that.

  • DON'T PLAY APARTHEID ISRAEL!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Im In Love With Her Songs, Her Lyrics Are Ace So Is Her Guitar Playing :D

  • Fell in love with this song in college along with my mildly confused but ultimately lesbian (I am male) electrical engineering lab partner. Somehow I linked the two, back in those halcyon days. Miss them; miss her. Song brings it all back. Sometimes bittersweet is the best flavor there is...

  • great song from an artist with a special style.....MORE FANTASTIC ´80´s music at my channel!!!!

  • My girl has a beautiful voice and a great pair of legs...oh yeah!!!

  • Reminds me of my teens/twenties thank-you xx

  • I thoroughly enjoyed this.

  • ExTrAoRdInArIa mUjEr !!!!

  • Her lyrics fuled my wild imgination when I was a kid... She tell's us stories!!!

  • What a fantastic, fantastic song, and so original. It's the first Suzanne Vega song I ever heard: I was eighteen and in Dorothy Perkins, and I recognised her distinctive voice from the DNA remix of Tom's Diner a few years before. She's a great musician, also really good live.

  • Love her!!!!!!

  • I always loved Suzanne Vega and this is no exception.

  • I was seventeen when I heard this for the first time and I fell head over heels for it. Nothing's changed in 23 years. It's absolutely perfect.

  • LOVE IT!!!

    Gorgeous!

  • This is a great song!

  • it's the videoclip

  • sorry. I thought you created the video.

  • What are you talking about? Ponchsanta didn't do anything to this song...It's a Suzanne Vega video.

  • @Outloudart No it's not, its about a poster of Marlene Dietrich on her wall watching her make mistakes in relationships. The video is the official one made to go with it.

  • Great song. The best New Age lyrical song ever!

  • This Is Good

    =]

  • You have no idea of what this song means to me, thanks sooooo much for the upload!

  • This song was burned in my memory. Back in 1994 I was clearing out my flat in Perth to do a "geographical" to Sydney, and all I had to listen to was the first Suzanne Vega tape and one from Blondie. I listened to them on an answering machine, and they gave me inspiration to carry on.

Lots of things changed in my life after that. :)

  • Suzanne Vega, another brilliant eighties artist that seems to have been half forgotten, this song is magnificent as is Luka despite the darkness of the lyrics.

Music like this is timeless but I feel lucky to have been growing up when this sort of thing was in the charts a lot, rather than all the ways it's split now into dance, urban, rock etc.

For THIS old fart ( I'm 40) the eighties were THE decade where pop music really started to grow up, great post, thank you!

  • Funny, I always think of Luka as a much darker song...

Luka seems to be about an abusive situation that is not going away. Marlene is also about negative situation, but one she seems fully aware of, and fighting against. For me, it's an uplifting song.

  • @PeterPiper1505 Thank you... your comment says the very same with regard with how I feel toward this song... it is indeed timeless as you put it.. I was 10 years old (I think) when it used to be on the radio... and I've not forgotten it... you describe it well, esp the "darkness of the lyrics" as you put it... this kind of music I find stays with one forever....

  • i fell in love with her 20 odd years a go lol

  • Hi Suzanne from Ireland, saw yr picture on the wall ! G

  • Brilliant !

This song takes me way back !

Thanks so much for the upload!

  • Very good song =D

  • you can say that again.

  • good song! But she still have a secret when she siing.

  • You are very observant---the great mystique about Suzanne Vega is that in almost all her songs she is singing about more than she seems to...perhaps it is her Buddhist leanings, her androgony, or a person on a journey to discovery. In any case, she produces some of the most profound songs anybody ever has.

  • I've met people from her soul group before. They have very deep and rich souls, very beautiful actually but somehow you never get to the core of them. They always leave a thin wall between you and their soul. For a pop star I suppose that is perfect. She's brilliant anyway!

  • Yes, I agree. but maybe there is a reason they can seem so distant. Maybe they have to be that way to protect something rare and precious....and/or maybe they actually can and do open up when they sense the other person can truly understand them.

  • I agree with you but I've been out with a woman from her soul group and if they sense in any way you have betrayed them they clam right up and go totally out of communication and you are never allowed back in. She's a great songwriter anyway!

  • Need better sound quality....

  • certainly, but i can't send suzanne vega songs any more. youtube identifies the sound and don't allows to publish the clip, because of copyright.

  • Shame that

  • No this is the recording the sound is the same as the tape and record(omg Im old) kind of breathy thanks for adding !!!

  • where do you get the videos in the first place ,just wondering how its done, tanx

  • @ponchsanta

Wait, ur saying u can't overdub the video with a good mp3 because YT has some Music Recognition Software?

  • @novembrine1 ...yeah as soon as you upload something obvious like a chart hit etc..then youtube recognises it and automatically gives an itunes link as seen above....you probably could upload a good quality copy, but it would have an automatic copyright notice on it from youtube and if the copyright owner claimed it and it got removed by YT then you would get a 'strike'....multiple strikes means all your channel/videos taken down and a ban on that account!!

  • @thesunreport

    What a major crap!

  • @novembrine1 ..lol..this video will already have a copyright notice on it probably, and on the uploaders channel, the info will be there to say how this affects the video.......for example although it is allowed to stay up generally...it may be banned on YT in Germany or other specified territories....and even if this low quality video is flagged for infringement it will be removed and cause a strike on the uploaders account..

i imagine that's more likely when it's HQ audio..i.e...more piratable

  • @thesunreport but anyway you can easily find her albums on the net... ;-)

  • @ponchsanta ..she is awesome...and when i said it was a low quality video i meant comparatively in the context of the explanation...i've watched this particular video loads of times....nice upload!!. : )

  • @thesunreport BLAH! x

  • @valebeyondtears2

It's one dollar or so (less in an album) from Amazon Mp3s. However, having bought the MP3, this sounds much more beautiful. I don't know how it was done. My high quality MP3 sounds really dry, and in fact I thought it was a completely different version - a different take or mix. This is much nicer.

  • <

It's the same version, the single version. I've managed to adjust the settings on my computer audio player. so it sounds more like the sound in this video now. But still this video has much richer and yet also mellow sonic qualities. It's just a matter of how the sound is produced. Maybe the CD, LP and VHS recordings are better than the MP3 also (I usually prefer CD sound to MP3 sound). There's a lovely rich and mellow bell-like sound in this video.

    (Thanks for sharing)

  • <

I know the digital "quality" of sound is low in this video. Still what's there is from a rich source - I'd love to hear that very source in its highest quality output.

It's a lovely recording. Very good graphic equalizer recommended for playing back this MP3.

  • This is the song that introduced me to Suzanne, in fact, a live version which was slower and better. So many fucking awesome.

  • It's such an AWESOME song!

  • I can't get it out of my head

  • Questa canzone è stata dedicata a Marlene Dietrich

  • I see Miranda in Suzanne too. Both beautiful women.

  • What is this song about?

  • yes she does but she alot more fitter than miranda

  • Great song and video! Great Suzanne! What a memories...

  • miranda on the wall! :)

suzanne is a perfect true artist!

  • miranda on the wall! she's perfect!

  • The thinking mans musician.

  • Good Song

  • suzanne hit a home run with this vid, thanks for sharing

  • Great Singer/Songwriter - Dont you think she looks like Mirands from Sex and the City?

  • i don't know, i don't watch sex and the city! :-)

  • Yes I can see miranda for sure

  • @MadOnLiving She looks far better :]

  • I can't even handle how hot she is in this.

  • Amazing song, I didn't know it had a video! It's not on the "Gold - The Videos" DVD... Thanks very much! ;)

  • Great song, don't know what else to say.

  • GREAT SONG.THANKS TO UPLOAD IT.
