Hahaha Gotta love Patti Labelle.

She outsings people more than she realizes due to her huge voice. So powerful, it's ridiculous! I can remember seeing her perform with Mariah Carey, and during that one belt they had together, she literally muted Mariah haha.

She never seems to be a stage hog or anything though, it's just her voice won't allow anything but lol. Anyone who performs with her knows the risk of it, and should be prepared for the expected.

well, if you saw the actual interview years ago (when patti was on her burnin tour) with diane sawyer, they talked about this. the video you have was actually edited down and there was a struggle with the mic. i heard with my own ears in the interview that diana snatched the mic from patti and then someone other than diana passed patti a mic. so to be fair, what you see in this video is not what really happened. this is the aftermath. at this point, diana can only act civil.

@jeromerich26- the full performance is on youtube; you should watch it. Diana didnt snatch the mic from Patti- she sings the first part of the song onstage alone. Later a bunch of artists fill the stage, and she passes the mic off to Patti. Diana didnt snatch it, and neither did Patti. That night has been so trumped up over the years.

Diana is a really skilled musician and I think she knew Patti would deliver the right kind of gospel swoops and wails that would sound good. Around that time, Diana had some fabulous backup singers that would do that sort of ending after she had finished the narrative part of the song. Look at "All For One", the last song on the Caesar's Palace concert. I think she intentionally gave Patti the mic. Diana does not do swoops and wails. She's an interpreter of lyrics and emotional experience.

As Diana continued to sing, she said "Help Me Somebody !"

Patti moved around & began to SLOWLY take center stage, entering from the left; Diana beckoned Patti with her hands to enter.

However, Patti still appeared to be reluctant; so Diana jumped to her right & Patti came out more. Diana then gave Patti the microphone. 

Patti did her Signature grab & started singing.

Patti was not rude and Diana was not upset. if anything she looked relieved.

@Mikaelts FINALLY, someone who saw what I saw. I taped it when it forst came on and still have the tape. I saw exactly the same as you. People always said she snatched it. But I knew she didn't. I was beginning to think she did and they edited it. Maybe Diana stopped the finale and had them do it over. But I doubt it.

After the show & a few months later, I discovered that a friend of mine who lives in New York was there in the audience.

We watched the tape this time together.

I asked him , why does Diana look tired ...?

According to him, Diana had just arrived from a performance in New Jersey via helicopter.

Thats perhaps why she said during her monologue, " I rushed a long way..." & durng the song she said "Help Me Somebody!"

Yeah, clearly that was blown out of proportion in the age before youtube when a person could break a video down and see for oneself what happened. Ross wouldn't have given Patti the mic if she didn't want Patti to do Patti. You can see her wave Patti over then playfully back away as if she didn't mean it and then finally hand it over. And like someone said Ross clearly was enjoying herself.
