Linda & Neil first worked together in the early 70's. Neil & Linda met Emmylou the same night. They were in Houston and went to hear Emmylou play. Emmylou had Linda, Dolly and Neil sing harmony on Light of the Stable. Neil sang and played harmonica on Linda & Emmylou's '99 Western Wall. Dolly personally called him to ask him about the meaning of the lyrics, and could she alter a line. If you have personally known Neil since the 70's, have his phone # and his blessing,I don't see the problem.
And how would this suck the life out of the original meaning ? Emmy Lou has sung enough backup for Neil to be sure to be a close and understanding friend of his and he should be so lucky as to have this song sung by them .Did Linda suck the life out of Love Is A Rose ? Without her that song would never have been heard and hearing Neil sing it is just painful. I love After the Goldrush..It is Neil's finest album and I love it .
@neonlight2000. I agree. This is an ethereal experience - in the scope of the lyric and the angelic sound - "getting high" would be the perfect lyric. To change it is to suck a little soul from the song.
...and I felt like I could cry....when I heard them self censor themselves changing the original "and I felt like getting high"...that aside...a lovely version, indeed!
This was a terrifying song when it came out in 1970, as the Vietnam War went on endless, unstoppable, and Nixon was president, and the country was splitting apart far more than now, even. It became even more popular during Watergate. Lying in a burnt out basement, starting to dream that kindly aliens would come and get us to start over someplace else. It matched an end of the world screenplay that inspired it. Video doesn't bring any of that out.
hard to find a better vocal combination and the lyics to each song they sing together you can tell have been chosen so carefully. right on ladies! you are my faves!

Why change the original lyrics? Sing a different song if you are forced to change someone else's art.

There was a band playing in my head
and I felt like getting 'HIGH'"--
If you are going to do a cover of a song, at least have the class, respect, and guts to use the original lyrics.

@bobwhite51 Or ask the original artist for permission to change the lyrics, which Parton did.
