  • Lucky he hadn't handed over the money or signed anything! Now, run fast!

  • reminds me of when to this one crappy dealership looking for a car. all the guy tried to do is sell me pieces of shit!

  • Wow! I never thought I would see this again! Thanks for posting it. Electric Company memories FTW!

  • Yep just like every car dealer I ever met in Dallas.......

  • Sounds like Scatman Crothers and Tom Lehrer.

  • Right. We should teach our children early to watch out for avoid getting screwed!

  • Dizzy G.

  • This brings back memories.... I think of this when I see "As is" in ads.

  • Yes it is Dizzy. A lot of jazz artists like Blossum Dearie (Schoolhouse Rock- Unpack your adjectives) were doing voiceovers during that time.

  • You get what you pay for... :^)

  • Whenever I hear or see the words "As Is" this clip ALWAYS comes to my mind! Thanks for posting this, and thank you Electric Company!! :)

  • @wlbaz Same here - not only that, but the saleman's pronunciation of it also stands out in my mind. Electric Company was great AS it WAS in the 1970's, but AS it IS today, hmmm...

  • @wlbaz This is an amazing piece for teaching kids (I was 5 the first time I saw it) about "as is".

  • "I wanted AS WAS!"

  • what's wrong with the guy's hands who's buying the car?

  • nothing wrong with his hands, he was just hoping the salesman might include a doggie treat as part of the deal.

  • Wow - $50 for a car reduced to 10! And I thought I got a deal paying $750 for my first car.

  • Salesman sounds like Dizzy Gillespie to me.

  • It's more than just likely. Gillespie did a lot of voice work for the Hubleys ("The Hat" and "the Hole", for example) and you can't mistake his voice for anyone's. (Except maybe Scatman Crothers.) I'd say that's definitely Dizzy Gillespie on vocals. :-)

  • @FlashWeiner

You know, he DOES sound like Dizzy! Maybe it was him...

  • The thin customer reminds me of Mister Burns from: The Simpsons.

I imagine this was him during his better days. :-D

  • Smithers, buy me this car.

  • @ebf1957 Yes it's a little known fact that the cartoon drawing that now serves as Mr. Burns had his start on the Electric Company. HEY YOU GUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUYYYYYYYYYYYYSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I bought a car from this guy too.

  • hahaha! even after 30 some odd years, I still remember this! as is!

  • And to think that gave segue to the used car dealerships sticking the AS IS - NO WARRANTY on all the cars. Nevermind the fact that in three days time that lemon you bought for almost half a year's salary is going to explode on the motorway. - I could be wrong. :)

  • Fffity bucks...and its yours. Classic

  • One of my favorites too! XD

  • Yeah, I bought a car like that once.

  • Loved this. Is the voice of the salesman Dizzy Gillespie?

  • Definitely Dizzy. Exxxxxxactly the way you hear it up there.

  • Idunno. Could be Scatman Crothers too.

  • I want it AS WAS!!! LOL!

  • OMG! For the past 35 years, this short would come into my head from time to time. I could never remember what it was from, though. Thanks for posting!

  • Same here!

  • I do remember it :)

  • I always loved this one!!! Believe me when I was a kid and we would ride our bikes to some of these little car lots and look... there were some old Ford Falcons for $50.00.. AS IS!!!!

  • Ha ha! I like how the salesman is selling the car to a young Mr. Burns from the Simpsons.

  • ...hehe my mother wached this wen she was littel the buyr looks like mr brns in the simpson hehe...♥♥♥ Love it

  • that was Mr. Burns b4 he got successful

  • AZZZZZZ. IZZZZZZZ. I told my friend about this and we both agreed this is a classic. 50 buck and it's yours...Azzzzzz Izzzzzz!

  • I always liked this segment; thanks!

  • Silly, and fun for no real reason! Love the way the car just falls apart--but whaddya expect from a car that costs less than 50 bucks!?!?!

  • I think I bought a car from this guy...

  • The Salesman was shady but cool- and could he have tried to shaft the Buyer for looking like Robin Hood?

  • I can't blame the guy for wanting the car "as WAS" after the seller hit the hood...four stars!

  • I think the salesman sounds like Scatman Crothers. He did lots of cartoon voice work and it would've been cool if he did voice work for cartoons on Sesame Street and The Electric company.

    Great clip!

  • It's Dizzy. Trust me.

  • Does anyone remember the Hubley's Cacabooty? It's about two little girls playing in their bedroom. I believe it was a recording of the Hubley's kids. They made an animation cartoon of their leasurely activities. i have seen this video for almost 25 years.

  • the car salesman sounds like George Foreman..

  • You are not alone. This is still in my head; archived but never forgotten.

  • Same as all the others... every time I hear or see "As Is" I immediately think of this sketch. I haven't seen it in YEARS... thanks for posting it!!

  • I've always said this too. My kids even say it and they had never seen the cartoon until YouTube...

  • Yeah, this skit I saw years ago totally changed the way I would utter the term...."azzz izzzzzz".

  • CRAZY - I remember this.

    Its freaking me out

  • The Buyer looks like the template for Mr. Burns.

  • Who knew that we were simultaneously learning to read and the life lesson "let the buyer beware"?! The CTW rules.

  • Like Bill Cosby used to say in the intro to "Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids", "We're coming at you with music and fun, and if you're not careful, you may learn something before it's done." I remain convinced that the best teach is done when the student doesn't realize he's being taught.

  • you got that right!

  • The car dealer sounds just like jazz legend Jack Sheldon (who voiced some other Hubley animated films, as well as the Schoolhouse Rock "Conjunction Junction" and "Naughty Number Nine" segments).

  • Actually it's Dizzy Gillespie. Find a recording of him speaking and it'll freak you out after hearing this...

  • This has stayed in my head for years. Everytime I hear or read "as is" I have to say it like the skit.

  • Yeah, whenever I see something marked "as is" I say to myself, "I want it AS WAS!"

  • I absolutely learned the term "as is" from this. Feel sorry for anyone using Ebay that didn't watch Electric Co. ;)

  • Yes I learned it from this too. I don't think I was conciously aware of "as is" until this.

  • great call! i've said "azzz izzz" like that basically as a force of habit going back to when i first saw this as a kid more than 30 years ago, but did not recall this as the source until seeing it just now!!!

  • @PooBuS Third that! I just came here looking for this cartoon after using that phrase.

  • Yup, it's a Hubley!
