The first piston doesn't shoot me high enough into the air. Everything else works except I don't fly high enough to hit the pistons above. How do I change this?

I wonder. If you put a piston one block up make it face down, place block below it, then activate it pushing the block and all the blocks beneath it 1 down. will it ush all blocks in the entire world? or is there a cap for how many it can push?
