prolly some naked dude runnin around in the desert moving the rocks screaming "ima believer!" flailing his arms in the air while holding a wet burito in the right hand
gusting winds, ice cold temperatures and rain (ie just the right conditions) create a thin layer of ice with which allow the rocks to be blown across the flat relatively frictionless desert ground.
@curtsher11 Absolutely. The soil type, the presence of water, and the freezing temperature are all available for the formation of ice lenses, A.K.A. frost heave. The stones are not sliding uphill, they are sliding downhill along with the playa surface. After the ice lenses melt, the entire south end of the playa settles back with the south end lower, and the trails appearing to run uphill.
That frustrates me, they have NEVER caught video of them moving? Of all the rocks there they've never just stuck a camera out there and just let it run until something moves. Pft. -.- Time for me to get a camera and head to Death Valley.
Quantum physics states that object are like molecules and look to find the place with the most amount of energy(closer to the center of the earth) but with the valley being flat and no possible way of lowering themselves they search blindly for the lowest possible are in the flats
Jesus, why hasn't anyone just left a camera watching one of these? I mean like a military grade camera with a generator connected to it? Something like that.
how come no one has setup a video camera or at least a still camera that took photos every hour or once a day or something so we could see the before and after shots.

It’s really a natural phenomenon but there’s no mystery about it. All living things move naturally. In the case of the rocks moving or seems like moving can be explain on a simple term. Solid rocks naturally expand during the day, heated by the sun and contract by cold night. The landscape is flat soil the very ideal surface, so as the time went by, day in, day out, expands, contracts, you have a moving solid rock.

There has to be an explanation to this geological phenomenon, I'm positive that the reason has to be either something related to the tectonic movements of the plates in the asthenosphere or the magnetic effects of the molten core of the earth. I'm in love with this phenomenon, it's amazing, beyond words!
@PiRaTe1o1 It's been a while since I've been here, but I can tell you that the reason the stones slide is due to frost heave. The temperature gets cold enough, the soil type is right, and there is water available from the springs. The stones are not sliding uphill, it just seems to appear that way because the southern end of the playa is sliding downhill along with the stones.
If you look at the rock in photo 0:53 you can clearly see a waterline mark made by the dessert sand. Looks like the water will reach...3-5 inches?? If so, that would be enough water to give some buoyancy and then maybe with the wind and water together it can move the rock?
But given Archimedes' principle (that a fluid will exert an upward force on an object immersed in it equal to the weight of the fluid displaced by the object)...a rock getting any buoyancy in water is unlikely :/
You would need gale force winds..even then I highly doubt it would move the rock. Also if it was wind the rock would 'tumble' and not slide. As for ice...well that is possible I guess but researchers have put wooden stakes in the ground and the rocks move while the stakes remain untouched. By looking at the photos the grooves are very consistant. Also if you look at the edge of the groove the edge is also very consistant. Given that, it looks the ground was pretty wet while in motion.
I think the rocks move when the soil is moist or wet and then freeze thus the ground expand making those rocks on top move. Now depending on the consistency or types of the soil would moisture or wetness turn into ice thus some of them move to opposite directions. Wind coldness and direction might also be a factor as to which part of the ground freeze first. I think this can be experimented in a miniature to test if that is really the case. I am not scientist.
How strange. Its not impossible that something like this could happen. So don't say "its not possible" because then your head is more closed than a space ship in space. The question should be "why are they moving". That is a question that will actually get you a real answer. So therefore to get us somewhere to start with, we come up with a theory based on what we know so I'll say "magnetic field" (which was proven wrong I think) and go from there. To discover things you need an opened mind.
omg what is wrong with people...it has been a well known and documented fact that the nocturnal animals in this desolate habitat have been using this dry lake bed& its 'stones" as a community Ouija board for centuries.. when scientists pick up any stone they usually find the words "no" yes, or maybe,or possibly a letter or symbol of some sort, Often the stone is mysteriously accompanied by small arrangements of animal "pellets" nearby as if the animal was surprised or startled by revelation.
@xxXghislainXxx I know I'm wasting my time with you or maybe you're just kidding. But no. Everything is made of atoms but not everything is conscient. You need a brain for that. I'm sure you have a weird persective outside the box type of thinking, but that's your right.
I dont think you understand how many ants are required to move that much weight. You clearly dont have an understanding on the subject so please stop trying like you know. I dont know nothing of these moving rocks but I do know ants cannot consistently drag a rock of that size for that much distance. Common sense, so yea your theory is flawed.
Can Ice heave really explain the different behaviors of the rocks. And the trails left behind? Would they still be there if the rocks were lifted by ice? Are they moving all the time? seismic activity during the rain?
Because that would explain one rock moving while the other does not... I don't know, just thought I'd see if someone thought of that.
The reason the stones move is due to a common phenomenon known as frost heave. Ice lenses form beneath the playa surface creating slopes for the rocks to slide down. Any rainfall while ice lenses are present is enough to set the rocks in motion. The frozen subsurface explains why the trails of the rocks are of a roughly uniform depth no matter how much they weigh. An ice lens forming directly under two stones would cause them to take off in opposite directions.
The Nature channel said it best when they said "sometimes, Hell freezes over." Besides that, the Play is in the mountains, not in the valley. Why do you think some geologists have hypothesized that ice sheets are moving the rocks ? In addition, the valley itself is NOT 130 degrees year round. I have spent time in the desert southwest, and I can tell you, it can get very cold.
sure it gets cold there fine. but death valley gets about 1in of rain a year, how can u possibly get water lol. if there was water it wouldnt be a desert
It rains and snows in the desert. Just not as much as other places. Do some research on flooding in Death Valley. You might be surprised at what you find.
'desert' comes from 'desertum' - an abandoned place. "deserted". it says nothing about water. time to get that cartoony picture of yellow sand and aladin and whatever else out of your mind. most of the world's deserts are quite different. and just another example - in estonian the word for desert - "kõrb" - originally meant big areas of forest with no human settlement for kilometres.
as a low pressure area builds behind the rock ... where wind deposits sand granuals- in front of the boulders high pressure removes sand as wind increases around the rocks- thus the rock is continually moving down a constant micro "hill" and nudges along the wind determins the direction - and as the rock slides down a mini slope it has sand building up behind it... this was discovered by Jack Lambie in the 1980's...
Jack "was" the Godfather of modern Hang Gliding - google him... he has endless credits from building the first human powered airplane to designing the first full streamlined 18 wheeler to being the first to ride a "tandem" bicycle around the world - to holding several human powered vehicle records- he helped design the Honda CiviC - he held several records with the soaring society & navigated a VW powered motor-glider to Peru to photograph the Giant Condors-
BUT...last night on the History channel they had a program called "How the earth was made" and they focused on Death Valley and the moving rocks and all the Geologists said the rocks are moving UPHILL!!!!!!!!!!!!!
however we are looking at a very minature micro "hill" because the sand accumulates directly behind the rock as the wind causes a "low" pressure area there.... the micro hill is exagerated because the "high" pressure area on the front face of the rock causes the sand there to be blown away and evacuated -
this micro hill is not noticeable except by very close examination -
The only problem I can see with your theory is that the microhills would be forming on the uphill side, making it even more uphill. Did you think about that at all.
The rocks are not going uphill when they move. Ice lens formation, otherwise known as frost heave, is capable of lifting houses and fracturing foundations. I have a picture of an isolated area of frost heave where the lens is at least 18" thick. The southern end of the playa, however, is an ice lens generating machine. The surrounding terrain features shield it from the sun in the winter, and all of the necessary elements to promote frost heave are there.
Then they were incorrect. This kind of dry bed is one of the flattest terrains that naturally occur. The lake does flood periodically, and when it freezes the rocks can be lifted up a sufficient distance that, as the ice melts, they slide "down" and forward slightly. The precise mechanics of this are still fuzzy, but only because there are restrictions on staying out there for long periods of time, or installing instruments which would ruin the still quite pristine area.

Apparently the Rocks have changed speed sorta into turbo mode after the "Roswell Crash" and they say that these are the left over remains of a phrehestoric alien crashing into a rocky mountain being in-tombed for years and finally breaking free to find it's becon
well i will say what i want ..if u dont like it then dont spend ur precious time replying my comments..
optemoz. ok mr. smart if u think spending years trying to know how a rock could move would help science go and spend ur life in desert studying rocks instead of sitting in ur room hugging ur guitar like dumb and making videos and praying that one day u get famous u old loser
Judging from the profile picture of this video poster, I highly doubt he used wikipedia when he was in school. No offense to the video poster, but judging by his picture, the internet didnt exist yet back when he went to school.
ur so obsessed ..why would u spend years trying to know how rocks move .leave them alone ..they r in the desert... it's not like they r going to move to ur home
if an unknown force, becames an object of study that HUMANS can manipulate or simulate in a experiment, then these forces are not unknown anymore, the flaw whit the scientific metod, are the limitations of the humans themselves
You do know that this phonomena is being looked into by many people. This video poster very likely simply copied all his information from wikipedia. I would hardly call a person copies and pastes stuff from wikipedia obecessed.
thats really a dumb thing to say... u dont have any interest in science or unexplainable things?? nobody devotes their lives to this.. but hell if i had the opportunity i would investigate it too... if everyone was like you we wouldnt have figured any of lifes mysteries out yet

nathanjedwards90 1 year ago
How strange. Its not impossible that something like this could happen. So don't say "its not possible" because then your head is more closed than a space ship in space. The question should be "why are they moving". That is a question that will actually get you a real answer. So therefore to get us somewhere to start with, we come up with a theory based on what we know so I'll say "magnetic field" (which was proven wrong I think) and go from there. To discover things you need an opened mind.

omg what is wrong with people...it has been a well known and documented fact that the nocturnal animals in this desolate habitat have been using this dry lake bed& its 'stones" as a community Ouija board for centuries.. when scientists pick up any stone they usually find the words "no" yes, or maybe,or possibly a letter or symbol of some sort, Often the stone is mysteriously accompanied by small arrangements of animal "pellets" nearby as if the animal was surprised or startled by revelation.

everything is conscious, from an atom, to the universe itself.
The earth, planets, stars and galaxies are conscious beings.
Mountains and rocks are conscious just as trees and plants are.
xxXghislainXxx 1 year ago
@xxXghislainXxx I know I'm wasting my time with you or maybe you're just kidding. But no. Everything is made of atoms but not everything is conscient. You need a brain for that. I'm sure you have a weird persective outside the box type of thinking, but that's your right.
b1locat 1 year ago
@b1locat plants and trees don't have a brain but they are conscious, you can communicate with them if you want. I said conscious, not conscient

I don't know, just thought I'd see if someone thought of that.

i love things like this, mysteries that just don't seem to make any sense.

MrTarzan1962 2 years ago
Ice???? Dude its death Valley its like 130 degrees there year round (whence its name).
howardkevinm 2 years ago
The Nature channel said it best when they said "sometimes, Hell freezes over." Besides that, the Play is in the mountains, not in the valley. Why do you think some geologists have hypothesized that ice sheets are moving the rocks ? In addition, the valley itself is NOT 130 degrees year round. I have spent time in the desert southwest, and I can tell you, it can get very cold.
MrTarzan1962 2 years ago
sure it gets cold there fine. but death valley gets about 1in of rain a year, how can u possibly get water lol. if there was water it wouldnt be a desert
howardkevinm 2 years ago
It rains and snows in the desert. Just not as much as other places. Do some research on flooding in Death Valley. You might be surprised at what you find.
MrTarzan1962 2 years ago
'desert' comes from 'desertum' - an abandoned place. "deserted". it says nothing about water. time to get that cartoony picture of yellow sand and aladin and whatever else out of your mind. most of the world's deserts are quite different. and just another example - in estonian the word for desert - "kõrb" - originally meant big areas of forest with no human settlement for kilometres.

physics of wind & weight explain the movements-
as a low pressure area builds behind the rock ... where wind deposits sand granuals- in front of the boulders high pressure removes sand as wind increases around the rocks- thus the rock is continually moving down a constant micro "hill" and nudges along the wind determins the direction - and as the rock slides down a mini slope it has sand building up behind it... this was discovered by Jack Lambie in the 1980's...
rentatrip1 2 years ago
@rentatrip1 who is jack lambie exactly?
easrth 2 years ago
Jack "was" the Godfather of modern Hang Gliding - google him... he has endless credits from building the first human powered airplane to designing the first full streamlined 18 wheeler to being the first to ride a "tandem" bicycle around the world - to holding several human powered vehicle records- he helped design the Honda CiviC - he held several records with the soaring society & navigated a VW powered motor-glider to Peru to photograph the Giant Condors-
also flew Planes in movies

BUT...last night on the History channel they had a program called "How the earth was made" and they focused on Death Valley and the moving rocks and all the Geologists said the rocks are moving UPHILL!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Jenny1954 2 years ago
Yes the geographic terrain may be so-
however we are looking at a very minature micro "hill" because the sand accumulates directly behind the rock as the wind causes a "low" pressure area there.... the micro hill is exagerated because the "high" pressure area on the front face of the rock causes the sand there to be blown away and evacuated -
this micro hill is not noticeable except by very close examination -
rentatrip1 2 years ago
The only problem I can see with your theory is that the microhills would be forming on the uphill side, making it even more uphill. Did you think about that at all.
MrTarzan1962 2 years ago
The rocks are not going uphill when they move. Ice lens formation, otherwise known as frost heave, is capable of lifting houses and fracturing foundations. I have a picture of an isolated area of frost heave where the lens is at least 18" thick. The southern end of the playa, however, is an ice lens generating machine. The surrounding terrain features shield it from the sun in the winter, and all of the necessary elements to promote frost heave are there.
MrTarzan1962 2 years ago
Then they were incorrect. This kind of dry bed is one of the flattest terrains that naturally occur. The lake does flood periodically, and when it freezes the rocks can be lifted up a sufficient distance that, as the ice melts, they slide "down" and forward slightly. The precise mechanics of this are still fuzzy, but only because there are restrictions on staying out there for long periods of time, or installing instruments which would ruin the still quite pristine area.

well i will say what i want ..if u dont like it then dont spend ur precious time replying my comments..
optemoz. ok mr. smart if u think spending years trying to know how a rock could move would help science go and spend ur life in desert studying rocks instead of sitting in ur room hugging ur guitar like dumb and making videos and praying that one day u get famous u old loser

Well if it was an unknown force, then the laws of physics could completely fall apart!
sjsawyer 2 years ago
if an unknown force, becames an object of study that HUMANS can manipulate or simulate in a experiment, then these forces are not unknown anymore, the flaw whit the scientific metod, are the limitations of the humans themselves
