Buddha was born in Nepal. He came to Kathmandu valley during King Jitedasti. King Jitedasti was a 7th King from Kirat dynasty. And yeah Ashoka never ruled Nepal because Kirat at that time were very strong. Kirat only succumbed to Licchavis in around 330AD during King Gasti who was 29th Kirat King.
Rai culture adds much more to Nepali culture. These are assets to our country. Rai, bahun, damai, gurung Je bhaye pani sabai bhanda pahile hami Nepali.
NEWAH or Newari languages have connection with Rai languages. NEWAH language still shows Kirati features in verbal inflection.
For example "YALA YEN " in Newari language are Kirat words. American linguistic specialist is studying about this and time will soon reveal more about Kirat-Newar. By the way Nepali language falls under Indo-Aryan group. But both Newah and Rai languages falls under Tibeto-Burmese group.
This is 21st century. All Kirat must unify and build Kiratdesh again.
The legend of Siva Mahadeva, the Great God, taking the guise of a Kirata,
with Uma with him as a Kirata woman, to test Arjuna when he was practicing religious penance in the Himalayas is quoted here from
Mahabharata verse of the Sata-rudriya section of the White Yajurveda (XVI, 7): Asau yo vasarpati nila-grivo vilohitah utainam gopa adrsrann vdaharyah: sa drsto mrdayati nah
I am proud to be kirat...

Google "Vedic Aryan entry into Nepal" by Shiva Raj Shrestha "Malla" and read.
It gives some insight into Kirat History and our religion.

Jai Kirat.
We should continue to promote our culture. Remember Sakela, once banned by the Malla kings, was only again officially recognized in 2058(2001).
We Kiratas have a lot to do in upholding our sanskriti, culture and traditions.
Kiratas civilization is 5069 as 2009. It is the oldest in Indian-subcontinent.
Jai Kirat.
May the glorious name of Kiratas live as long as the sun.
