Originally dates back to the days of WarCraft, when a map designer mispelled "Own" as "Pwn". What was originally supose to be "player has been owned." was "player has been pwned".

Sorry brother. Before i ever heard it online, in IRC in the 90's i was leading clan LoK and got in a arguement with some kid and i meant to say " owned " and was typing so fast i typed " pwned " and when i was called on it my clanmate "Hed" backed me up and we just rolled with it and it stuck.

Not saying we created it, but i have a prior claim. This was before EQ even. Just a fact for who ever.

As far as I knew, chatrooms were censored to keep software pirates and such from communicating easily. It's where leetspeak came from. It's not much of a stretch to assume that 'you got owned' became 'you got pwned' to bypass a censor on the word Owned, but I think it's just a typo that someone did, and those who saw it made fun of the guy. Newbies copied it without knowing its history, until what we have today. But who knows?

All I know is, I first saw it myself around 1992.

Pwned came into my life when i was leading clan LoK and i got in a arguement with someone in a chatroom and i was typing so fast i typed pwned and instead of owned. My friend backed me up and said i meant to type that when the guy tried to turn a mistype back on me, like it helped him win the argument.

Anyway ever since then ive been using it and later it started poping up all over, so in my world i made it and it was a accident.
