This version is clearly more polished and well filmed version than the one of freddie jost. The video of Jost is clearly filmed live with lesser quality and the two can't be compared, really.
Also perhaps Jost had to substitute for another boy and was not given much notice? Lots of young soloists get their debuts that way.
I'm not saying one boy is better than the other, just giving some points for perspective. I like both videos.
In comparison to Jost this boy sings much more in tune. I can't understand the rave about Jost. Yes he's just young, but in my opinion should be out playing about and wait til his voice develops more before taking on a demanding piece. At least this boy shows some sign of maturity in his voice and his pitch stays maintained.
I think most people rave about Jost's (freddie, I'm assuming) tone more than anything else. I prefer Jost's tone, but this boy is also very good, and has a pleasant, rich, tone. Though that long note at the beginnng did not stay in pitch :)
The two boys definately have different strengths and recent videos of Jost show much improved pitch.
He has a beautiful voice , but had Panajotis Iconomou been available, wow, this would have been amazing. Actually, in the chorus views, I see Manfred Hohenleitner, who, a year later,in Mozart's Apollo et Hyacinthus, showed himself to be one of the Toelzers' greatest altos, in the choir. He probably wasn't quite ready for this.
But who is the boy? And when has Jost recorded the aria? Oh Mensch! Das ist herrlich, die ganze Aufnahme ist wunderschön! Die Beste dieses Werkes! There is a cd with boys sopran und alt: Tölzer Knabenchor, Collegium Aureum, F.J. Meyer, earlies 70. The orchestra not so good as the choir, unfortunately!
This is absolutely gorgeous - thanks to those folks who post these lovely Bach choral works! I listen to this continuously while at work. This is one of the most peaceful, beautiful arias I've heard, and to hear this boy sing it so purely is just amazing. Thanks!!
What an amazing boy alto. I have never heard this aria sung by a boy before! I suppose Schubert may have sounded something like this when HE sang in a boys choir! What did become of this singer? What is his name? Also, when you have heard Harnonourt´s Christmas Oratorio you don´t want to hear any others! (boring in comparison.)What church is this?
I think the videos must be from the early 80ies. I think, Harnoncourt looks a little bit different today :) So I think its recoreded before Frederic Josts interpretation.
Der ist Stefan Rampf. Wie schön singt er zusammen mit Bergius in BWV 124! Und wann hat Fredi die Arie aufgenommen? Hast Du sie, TK-Admirateur? Danke, GSG und NH!

Supposedly some part of this was changed to become Belinda Carlisle's 80's song "Heaven is a Place on Earth."

This is by no means an easy aria to sing and it is performed well. I find it pleasing to my senior citizen ears.

Did you mean Jost or Rampf by "He has as beautiful voice"?
I agree that Panajotis Iconomou had a lovely voice. I was defiantely blown away the first time I saw an old video of him singing alto.

Pour l'ensemble du Wweihnachtsoratorio, l'alto est Stefan Rampf. Les sopranos sont Allan Bergius, Martin-Gregor Lütje et Christian Schnellert.

I know Robin Schlotz sang it with Panajotis Iconomou..but havent heard the alto part performed by a boy alto :D absolutely beautiful hehe
Seddius 4 years ago
No, Robin sang only the sopran parts with Panajotis. The alto was Frederic Jost. If you mean the 2004 version of the XO...

I like the interpretation by Frederic Jost more. I wonder has this recorded before or after his contribution?
