The political correctness of not using the confederate flag/dixie/rebel just gets two big fingers from me. God bless the South. I love my state and Ole Miss. Bring back Colonel Reb and Dixie. Stop trying to change every thing we have. Hell yeah Mississippi is a beautiful state and we have an amazing history. Maybe we should start up a NAAWP, or have a WET (white entertainment television) and I recently saw a video game title in Wal mart and the title was the black college experience, what if white people did this. All hell would brake loose. all we would like is a song and a flag. Hotty Toddy.
@myers2308 I know this is from approximately a year ago, but in regards to your comment, that has to be one of the stupidest thing I've ever heard. If some of you whites where as brilliant & had that "great" intelligence quotient level, then you'd realize that minorities are seemingly entitled to these ethnic specialties because everything is almost, unfortunately, white by default. To hell with this Confederate culture, it's dead like it should be, like it or not!
This song was never about race... it was played to get people fun. Beautiful, powerful song do that. It SHOULDNT have been taken away because of some drunk fans/college students yelling "the south will rise again"
with that mentality we could take away the national anthem, because I could easily replace "and the home of the brave" with something else similar to TSWRA.
People can say what they want... just don't let it bother you to the point where NOBODY can enjoy a song.
The image of the Confederate battle flag has been destroyed by hate groups, I truly believe that everyone from the South(white and black) should stand together and defend our Southern Heritage. (back to the band playing Dixie at Ole Miss football games, come on people it is just a song. A song that many of us are still proud of. Sounds to me like more divisive people trying to make something out of nothing and let me be blunt, this is the real reason we can not get along in America.)
Boycott all athletic events at Ole Miss until "From Dixie With Love" is reinstated. Stop contributing to the Athletic Department, until Jones is fired.
@mistabigtimer why? please enlighten me. cause to me its a great song. if you dont like it dont listen to it...go somewhere else. quit tryin to destroy a good school. go to msu, lsu, alabama. nobodies forcin you to listen to this song.
This was the last piece of heritage Ole Miss had remaining, and Jones has stripped it away. I hope he realizes that all he has done has destroyed his own reputation, and shortened his stay as chancellor of the finest university in the South.
Anyone who thinks the War of Northern Aggression was fought over slavery and bigotry is sorely and sadly mistaken.
There were more black folks hanged in the streets of New York than there were in Oxford, Mississippi. Racism is not solely a "white blight".
Um yeah I agree with you on some points but the fact that the KKK protested the first game they didn't played it gives it a bad legacy, good song though, good band.
While I am a BAMA fan and do not agree with the obvious racist tone of some posts here, I am sad to see this go. There is entirely too much PC crap these days.
The bed-wetting, ass-kissing liberals are behind this. It would be nice to see the scum @ the american criminal lovers union stand up for free spreach for someone other than murdering islamic muslims. The 'fubu' shiirts should also be banned! This clothing lines statement says it is made by one group of people & not ment for others who are different from them - This is racial segregation!
The War for Southern Independence was caused by many factors but the primary cause was the thirst for money and power by Lincoln and his Northern Industrialist supporters.
In 1860, Southern tariffs accounted for approximately 80% of the Federal governments revenue. It was to insure this flow of money from the South that Lincoln sacrificed the lives of over 700,000 Americans.
The history of the War for Southern Independence has been told in our history books, in our schools and in the liberal media from the perspective of the Northern/Federal Government for the last 140+ years.
They have attempted to put a humanitarian face on the needless deaths of over 700,000 Americans by telling you only the selected parts of history that support the lie that the war was all about slavery.
I'm from New York and let me tell you, this stuff is awesome. As most whites in this country are completely cutoff from their past, this is refreshing. Not all southerners are racist and not all those who would like the south to rise again are racist.
I would rate, but I can't seem to get it to finish loading. Though I am a former member of the Pride of the South band. When I played this song for the first time in front of a crowd, the feeling was beyond anything that I had ever known. The reaction from the crowd and just the pride to be a part of it was amazing.
Adding to the previous post here since you have little space to do say something.Too many people worry way too much about their feelings about the past which many of us now were never a part of when it comes to slavery, our ancestors were.We have to remember to just love the music for the music. If all we do is keep arguing that this or that is racist, it simply leads to more arguments of the same. In the past, music was written to tell someone's story or their emotions so we would not forget.
the confederate flag, and the song dixie is all about southern heritage...and thats what ole miss represents. none of it has anything to do with slavery...
Except, you know, the fact that the song is sung by a recently freed slave who misses life back on the plantation where he was born.
The fact that it was sung by a slave means it has nothing to do with slavery, right? Or is it the part where it's from a minstrel show, which were particularly known for their extremely racist depictions of blacks? Is *that* the part that has nothing to do with slavery?
More power to Ole Miss fans, but it's really ignorant to disregard the origins of these songs.
I don't argue with you, but ewest121 saying that "none of it has anything to do with slavery" sounds a lot like disregarding the origins to me. It might just be my interpretation, though.
The confederate flag I have considerably less qualm with, though. That is a distinctly Southern cultural element.
I'm just saying. It's part of the history. You can't deny the bad parts just to be proud of the good parts.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
man i love Ole miss but as an African American i wish they would stop playing this song. Saying the south will rise again means you want slavery back. Same with the Racist confederate flag. These are racist things that ole miss has to get rid of, if they want national respect! I still love the school! HOTTY TODDY!
@TheJameezy the cofederate flag is not racist. people make it out to be but its not. in the civil war the confederate soldiers who fought in it, most of them didnt even own slaves. they werent really fightin for slavery but the right to keep the south theirs. and the confederate flag was just a symbol of their pride and their southern heritage (something we should all be proud of). if you dont like it...theres thousands of colleges in the world. and if you do dont try to change it. let it be.
@AgentCarter no the flag is not racist. sure the klan uses it but they shouldnt so really they are the ones that ruined it. the confederate flag has been use for many NON-RACIAL things, for instance it was flown on many ww2 ships, lynard skynard uses it as their symbol. so the flag itself is not racist!
um, did you read my comment??? obviously the flag itself is not racist. cloth cant think, so cloth cant be racist.
however the flag is a symbol of racism, in addition to simply being a symbol of southern pride. did i say that it is exclusively a symbol of racism? no, i didnt.
just because the flag is used for non-racial things doesnt change that it is also a symbol of racism. use your reading comprehension skills. come on
first off, i said its a symbol of racism, it isnt racist. it cant be racist, it is a piece of cloth.
but assuming you meant, "how is it a symbol of racism?". it is a symbol of the old south and a symbol of fighting for old south values, and yes that includes slavery, and later jimcrow and the KKK. it can also symbolize the confederacy. which was started due to MS and SC's fear that the republican party would outlaw slavery.
@AgentCarter its a FLAG that was made to represent or ""symbolize"" the south! and just because its for the south doesnt mean it "symbolizes" racism. the klan was stupid and should have never used and disgraced the confederate flag. and no is does not include slavery. the confederate flag was the battle flag durin the civil war, which was started to defend the south's states rights. just like the stupid govt now is trying to take away arizonas rights.
if you believe the flag symbolizes your heritage then by all means fly it. i know plenty of people who do so who arent racist.
but be aware that it is a symbol of racism as well and can be viewed as such for the reasons previously mentioned.
and your civil war history is off. you need to read a document called "A Declaration of the Immediate Causes which Induce and Justify the Secession of the State of Mississippi from the Federal Union." A big reason MS seceded was to protect slavery.
@AgentCarter whatever. im 16 years old so i may not know alot of history but to me it doesnt symbolize racism. and no matter how much you try to tell that to ppl everytime you wear or fly that flag your considered racist. but its not true and im just tryin to defend it.
well if you were really worried about being branded racist for wearing the flag then you could just not wear it. thats your call.
and like i said, im sure it doesnt symbolize racism to you. its up to you to decide whether or not you care if people think you are a racist. if you dont care, then fly the flag to represent your heritage (although you dont need a rebel flag to do that), but if you do care, then dont fly the flag because it symbolizes racism as well.
Lord, this is good to hear. I'm 47 years old and I have not heard Dixie played in public since I was a boy. The truly sad thing is that we now have two generations behind mine that have never heard it played with pride and who don't really understand what it means.
long live the south and the confederate flag is part of ole miss because they are part of the south. one of the thirteen states. God bless them all and ole miss for not forgetting there roots. God save the south..
@Islesfan4eva You really need to research the Confederacy. The following states were reconized in the south North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Florida, Mississippi, Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, Arkansas, Texas, Kentucky, Missouri, Louisiana. hence why there was thirteen stars. It wasnt for the thirteen colonies. november 28th 1861 is when missouri was amitted into the confederatcy. which was the 12th state. I know cause i live in the south and i am a reenactor.
The Battle Hymn of the Republic was written by Transendentalist Julia Ward Howe, an abolitionist, who supported abolitionist/terrorist John Brown and likened him to Jesus Christ.
Inspired by Union soldiers marching South (for abolitionism, in her mind), she wrote the words to the "hymn," to accompany the tune of John Brown's Body. Her husband helped to finance Brown's attempt to cause armed rebellion.
It is not a Christian hymn, uses biblical imagery to glorify the invasion of the South.
Daniel Emmett may not be the composer of "In Dixie's Land." It was probably written by a black musician named Lew Snowden.
An analysis of other works by Emmett shows little similarity to "Dixie."
The song shows familiarity with the South that Emmett did not have, but Snowdon could have.
Emmett and Snowdon both lived in Mt Vernon, Ohio, but Snowdon did have family in the South. The fact that the copyright is Emmett's means little; "songcatchers" copyrighted folk Appalachian songs as their own.
"Dixie" was written by an Black man, and one of the most intriguing melodies ever written, it's living history. To stop playing it would be as sad as not playing Music by the German masters. Art must not suffer because it was attached to someone's cause, we are bigger and better than that. A piece of art or melody never pulled a trigger or uttered a racial slur, those come from the mouths and minds of men. Let Dixie play, Bravo to the Ole Miss Band, its wonderful.
Pardy Hardy Tonight Ole Miss! Bet my dad $5 that you guys would beat Texas Tech against 94% of the country HAHAHA!!! Thanks for the $5! Mountaineers still rule, but Go Nutt, and Go Rebs! ~Deo Vindice~
it wasn't written by a black man... it was written by a white northerner to be sung by a white man in blackface to portray a black slave wishing he was a slave back in the south.
Thanks, I personally did not think anything was wrong with it but several people that I have seen thinks it is a bad song.just wanted a another view on it.
Beautiful. I'm in Alabama. I haven't heard Dixie played in years. The words and the song are NOT racist. In fact, years ago both black and white Southerners sang it as an homage to remember their homeland.
It's awsome when they play Dixie, but they ruin it by playing that vile and nasty "Battle Hymn of The Republic" in the middle of hte song. I guess they have to be P.C.
My ancestors did not own slaves and my dad- great grandfather picked cotton with my grandfather fighting in World War 2 and if you tell me honestly that u think i owe you anything I will tell you, no I do not ,sir. I will continue to recieve an education and study pharmacology in college, and if you want a hand out you can earn it like all the other hard working people of this world have.
If men are to be tried for their ancestors past actions then we would'nt get anywhere. Even African's enslaved rival tribes, along with the British, Portugese, Incan, Spanish, Chineese conquering other people.
I'm from Alabama ,the Heart of Dixie, and I'm a senior at an I.B. school. I made a 33 composite on my ACT and 2 of my best freinds made a 34 and perfect. Were not all stupid and illiterate but some do value our heritage.
I can't stand the ignorance of some who group all southerners, good and bad, into one group. Just because some still preach hatred doesn't mean all do. SOME in ALL groups of people preach hate. It happens. I can say this as a self proclaimed liberal college student form Massachusetts. Most of the south is filled with wonderful people, so let's not group them all into a negative stereotype, because if we do that, it would be hypocritical for us not to group ourselves with one as well.
I'm from Alabama and i think that all this shit saying that we are stupid racist and hicks is just plain bullshit. Sure our ancestors made some mistakes, but slavery for the most point is a long lost thought. We do not condone slavery, LONG LIVE THE SOUTH!
"I assume I hit my max on YOUTUBE" dagger: let me continue, sir: I have lived both in the North & the South. I was born in the South (VA) & went to HS, college & grad school in the North. Folks in the North are way more racist than folks in the South (if you don't believe me, go to Philly, NYC or Boston). That said, God bless Dixie 'cause I'm back in NC now!
That's true and its not even the north is just more racist, we've had to deal with all this racism bullshit. Nowadays it doesnt matter the color of your skin, if you are black white yellow or green.
I'm sorry to say that slow dixie will NEVER be the same, since they took away our flags. It took alot of the spirit away from many ole miss fans. Our flag should be brought back only as a symbol of ole miss football.
Today against Florida,it was Coach Nutt's biggest win here so far. I remember before my family, coach Nutt's family,+the other Arkansas/Ole Miss staff moved here, Coach Nutt's biggest game before he left was against LSU and we won in Death Valley. I was thinking how this game felt a little like the LSU game. How I believe that with the help with the coaches, fans, and players, we can turn this football team around and make them into champions. Mississippi.
Congrats to Ole Miss, I'm a Gators fan. lol Y'all played well. I have to say I got goose bumps listening to this. In our politically correct times, to they really still play this song? I thought they quit doing that. Hopefully, Miss doesn't become inudated(?) with yankees, like Florida has. I still consider Florida to be a Southern state, but barely.....
This just makes me want to say Y'ALL all day! Y'ALL! Y'ALL! Y'ALL! Keep your tails and your business up north, and we won't have a problem! GOD BLESS DIXIE!
You yankees lost your good morals and most of your Christianity a long time ago! Y'all have to many foreigners(with other relegion), gays, and dumb ass librals to even come close to having good morals. Come down South, and we will show you class; have you ever heard of "Southern Hospitality"?
I was there (age 14) in the 70s when the Univesity of Richmond retired Dixie as the school fight song. They played it like a hymn and I will never forget the emotion as the Battle Flag of the Army of Northern Virginia crossed the field for the last time. The Richmond and Citidel fans all stood and many wept. Keep up the good fight Ole Miss!
You deserve to be ripped apart by horses and god screw Dixie. You Rebels are the filthiest stupidest people up North are better Christians thatn you rebel scum and we have more sympathy than you rebels ever will have so go back to thinking you won the Civil war
This comment just shows how ignorant yankees are! And it is not the "Civil War", it's The War Between The States! It had nothing to do with "civil" issues! Y'all have been brainwashing America since Reconstruction! People down here have more class and morals than yankees will ever have! Maybe that is why they call us the "Bible Belt", I don't know....haha
That comment is the most stupidest comment from a hick i have ever read and i have read some dumb comments i mean that doesnt even barely make since and its the Civil war not the war between the states and up North is where the beauty is and peolpe up here are the one who ahev more class and morale
In addition to history, I guess they don't teach grammar up there either. With every word you type, you show everyone you are an idiot both in your lack of knowledge and how you present it in writing.
Its the internet noone uses proper grammer its just common sense but how could u tell any way since yr just a stupid hick and up north they give us a higher education that u jackasses
Most slaves from the south volunteered to fight for the confederacy. The south had acutually planned on doing away with slavery as well. General Grant was against salvery himself. We are not the "racist hicks" that we seem to be made out to be.
Why would you come on here and bash something you know nothing about? I know you have your own opinions, but you don't have to express them. If you don't like our heritage fine just leave it be. Its not the simple fact of where we live, its who we are..
it's been a while since I've been to school but I think the CSA's VP was named Alexander Stephens and in his cornerstone address, he said that the cornerstone of the CSA was the natural superiority of the white man over the negro.
The south is slandered for the actions of few.. Of course there were southerners that were pro slavery, but there was also as many northerners that were just as much for slavery. Lincoln himself said that he did not consider a black man to be equal to the whites. The point is that it wasnt all, no pun intended, black or white on either side. It wasnt all silver linings from the north as it wasnt from the south. Slavery was dying out by the end of the civil war anyway..
Dont fight with the yankees dont tell them how beautiful the south is. Cause they will all flock to ur state and ruin it. Look at florida! We dont want there liberal asses. CSA
There are a lot of damn good people in Dixie. Gods worst enemy is the wealthy greed on both sides that caused poor soldiers such as my family in the south and probably yours in the north to slaughter each other by the thousands in a war that should have never happened.
Its really amazing how misinformed people are regarding the civil war up north. Actually the north were the ones that brought slaves here. The War was actually started becuase the south wanted fare representation. Taxes had been raised almost 40% by Lincoln to those living in the south. Lincoln said that every slave that did not fight for the norht would be shot. In fact most norhtern land owners owned slaves, even General Grant while the war was being fought mind you.
It truly makes me sad that such a great song has been deemed "politically incorrect". "Dixie" is a part of Southern heritage. As a piece of music, it has absolutely no negative connotation.
i always wondered this??when the pc crowd banned the bringing of sticks so no one would wave the rebel flag, why didn't some students, just bring the stickless flag, you still can wave a flag without a stick???i use to love watching ole miss. when they would score a touchdown and all those beautiful flags would be waving..damn all that p.c. crap and bring back the col.!!
i be damn, i didn' think they could play dixie anymore, i love it, in this day of ignorant folks clamoring about racism and stuff, they use to play this at the citadel in charleston, i think they still do "on special occasions" OLD TIMES THERE ARE NOT FORGOTTEN, LOOK AWAY!! LOOK AWAY!!
This isn't Dixie. It's "From Dixie With Love", a modification of an Elvis song, "An American Trilogy," which combines Dixie and "The Battle Hymn of the Republic."
And everyone know that The Battle Hymn of the Republic was a pro-Union song.
Esquire magazine recently did a report. The states witht he lowest rates of hate crimes were: texas, mississippi(with zero), alabama, louisiana, florida, georgia, north carolina... the rest of the southern states ranked in the second lowest grouping. States in the northeast had the highest hate crime rates. Guess that blows some stereotypes away...eh?
What drives me nuts is the way people in the South who aren't blacks bitch and complain...then string people like John Rocker and Paula Jones out to dry. Oh well. Guess some talk the talk and some walk the walk....
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I hear booing in the background, I think those are the people that the confederates hurt the most, the african americans. Yankees rule! Im a conservative southern yank who does like this video due to the northern ending song. I do like the tune of Dixie too. Beautiful video. It shows history placed in a modern era.
The message of this song is that southern people can love their southern heritage and love the United States and other brothers and sisters of the world as well. But, we must not forget our heritage. The spirit of Dixie forever opposes the idea of "Yankees Rule". We are moving to a higher plane now. The South can be a place of love for all races, and yet we can still sing Dixie and be proud of our southern heritage. Ole Miss, by dam#! Against all tyranny of mankind--including racism.
You are a yankee if your american. The term yankee was made by the British to call the Americans during the Revolutionary War. That means if your American, you would be considered a yankee. The south called the north yankees, because the south did not want to be The United States of America anymore.
I represent Conservative Yankeeism. The South fought with heart and courage. They fought for their independence. They fought for a idea that works in The United States of America. I would have fought for the North, because the north was the United States. I would fight to free the slaves. I find the south in the past to be hypocritical. They were Conservative yet they were segregationalists. They saw one race over another. That is against true Christianity.
I agree that Slavery is not for the best of mankind, and its time was over. However, many of us can still be "wage slaves" today. Slavery was a system that survived for thousands of years, and just died out since now it is more feasible to use "wage slaves" in society rather than people who live on your land. Racism is against the good of humanity, no doubt. But, what if other groups are being racist and successfully dominating the world? We stand against all tyranny--including racism.
Amen! Every University in the South should play that before the game for the national anthem! The University of South Carolina still plays Dixie sometimes I think, and I think The Citadel plays it after a touchdown with the cannons booming. Clemson also played it back in the old military days. GOD BLESS DIXIE!
Last time I heard the U of Alabama band play Dixie was in 1970. You won't EVER hear them play it again. Can you imagine the media firestorm? If there is a Southern band still playing, except as a period piece, I'll bet it's not a game show on TV! (Not that TV EVER shows the band!)
I wonder how many people Colonel Rebel is a black man who lived at the college. Take that racism.

I would rate, but I can't seem to get it to finish loading. Though I am a former member of the Pride of the South band. When I played this song for the first time in front of a crowd, the feeling was beyond anything that I had ever known. The reaction from the crowd and just the pride to be a part of it was amazing.
Darqlover 2 years ago 4
Adding to the previous post here since you have little space to do say something.Too many people worry way too much about their feelings about the past which many of us now were never a part of when it comes to slavery, our ancestors were.We have to remember to just love the music for the music. If all we do is keep arguing that this or that is racist, it simply leads to more arguments of the same. In the past, music was written to tell someone's story or their emotions so we would not forget.

the confederate flag, and the song dixie is all about southern heritage...and thats what ole miss represents. none of it has anything to do with slavery...
ewest121 2 years ago 3
Except, you know, the fact that the song is sung by a recently freed slave who misses life back on the plantation where he was born.
The fact that it was sung by a slave means it has nothing to do with slavery, right? Or is it the part where it's from a minstrel show, which were particularly known for their extremely racist depictions of blacks? Is *that* the part that has nothing to do with slavery?
More power to Ole Miss fans, but it's really ignorant to disregard the origins of these songs.
DaMastaMynd 2 years ago
We aren't "disregarding" the origins, its more like leaving it in the past. Putting it behind. Ole Miss has LONG been what it used to be.

@TheJameezy the cofederate flag is not racist. people make it out to be but its not. in the civil war the confederate soldiers who fought in it, most of them didnt even own slaves. they werent really fightin for slavery but the right to keep the south theirs. and the confederate flag was just a symbol of their pride and their southern heritage (something we should all be proud of). if you dont like it...theres thousands of colleges in the world. and if you do dont try to change it. let it be.
xXiHeArToLeMiSsXx 1 year ago
obviously a piece of cloth cant thin and thus a flag cant be racist.
however the confederate is a symbol of racism in the old south
AgentCarter 1 year ago
@AgentCarter no the flag is not racist. sure the klan uses it but they shouldnt so really they are the ones that ruined it. the confederate flag has been use for many NON-RACIAL things, for instance it was flown on many ww2 ships, lynard skynard uses it as their symbol. so the flag itself is not racist!
xXiHeArToLeMiSsXx 1 year ago
um, did you read my comment??? obviously the flag itself is not racist. cloth cant think, so cloth cant be racist.
however the flag is a symbol of racism, in addition to simply being a symbol of southern pride. did i say that it is exclusively a symbol of racism? no, i didnt.
just because the flag is used for non-racial things doesnt change that it is also a symbol of racism. use your reading comprehension skills. come on
AgentCarter 1 year ago
@AgentCarter what is racist about it?!
xXiHeArToLeMiSsXx 1 year ago
first off, i said its a symbol of racism, it isnt racist. it cant be racist, it is a piece of cloth.
but assuming you meant, "how is it a symbol of racism?". it is a symbol of the old south and a symbol of fighting for old south values, and yes that includes slavery, and later jimcrow and the KKK. it can also symbolize the confederacy. which was started due to MS and SC's fear that the republican party would outlaw slavery.
from those perspectives it can symbolize racism
AgentCarter 1 year ago
@AgentCarter its a FLAG that was made to represent or ""symbolize"" the south! and just because its for the south doesnt mean it "symbolizes" racism. the klan was stupid and should have never used and disgraced the confederate flag. and no is does not include slavery. the confederate flag was the battle flag durin the civil war, which was started to defend the south's states rights. just like the stupid govt now is trying to take away arizonas rights.
xXiHeArToLeMiSsXx 1 year ago
if you believe the flag symbolizes your heritage then by all means fly it. i know plenty of people who do so who arent racist.
but be aware that it is a symbol of racism as well and can be viewed as such for the reasons previously mentioned.
and your civil war history is off. you need to read a document called "A Declaration of the Immediate Causes which Induce and Justify the Secession of the State of Mississippi from the Federal Union." A big reason MS seceded was to protect slavery.
AgentCarter 1 year ago
@AgentCarter whatever. im 16 years old so i may not know alot of history but to me it doesnt symbolize racism. and no matter how much you try to tell that to ppl everytime you wear or fly that flag your considered racist. but its not true and im just tryin to defend it.
xXiHeArToLeMiSsXx 1 year ago
well if you were really worried about being branded racist for wearing the flag then you could just not wear it. thats your call.
and like i said, im sure it doesnt symbolize racism to you. its up to you to decide whether or not you care if people think you are a racist. if you dont care, then fly the flag to represent your heritage (although you dont need a rebel flag to do that), but if you do care, then dont fly the flag because it symbolizes racism as well.

@stud915 there were 11 states in the Confederacy not 13. If you mean the thirteen original colonies Mississippi is not one of them either.

It is not a Christian hymn, uses biblical imagery to glorify the invasion of the South.
cgrsmknwmn 3 years ago
Daniel Emmett may not be the composer of "In Dixie's Land." It was probably written by a black musician named Lew Snowden.
An analysis of other works by Emmett shows little similarity to "Dixie."
The song shows familiarity with the South that Emmett did not have, but Snowdon could have.
Emmett and Snowdon both lived in Mt Vernon, Ohio, but Snowdon did have family in the South. The fact that the copyright is Emmett's means little; "songcatchers" copyrighted folk Appalachian songs as their own.
cgrsmknwmn 3 years ago
"Dixie" was written by an Black man, and one of the most intriguing melodies ever written, it's living history. To stop playing it would be as sad as not playing Music by the German masters. Art must not suffer because it was attached to someone's cause, we are bigger and better than that. A piece of art or melody never pulled a trigger or uttered a racial slur, those come from the mouths and minds of men. Let Dixie play, Bravo to the Ole Miss Band, its wonderful.

If men are to be tried for their ancestors past actions then we would'nt get anywhere. Even African's enslaved rival tribes, along with the British, Portugese, Incan, Spanish, Chineese conquering other people.

I remember before my family, coach Nutt's family,+the other Arkansas/Ole Miss staff moved here, Coach Nutt's biggest game before he left was against LSU and we won in Death Valley. it's been a while since I've been to school but I think the CSA's VP was named Alexander Stephens and in his cornerstone address, he said that the cornerstone of the CSA was the natural superiority of the white man over the negro.
how do you explain that?
JPLjanitor 3 years ago
The south is slandered for the actions of few.. Of course there were southerners that were pro slavery, but there was also as many northerners that were just as much for slavery. Lincoln himself said that he did not consider a black man to be equal to the whites. The point is that it wasnt all, no pun intended, black or white on either side. It wasnt all silver linings from the north as it wasnt from the south. Slavery was dying out by the end of the civil war anyway..
alhart1988 3 years ago
The invention of the tractor and other farm equipment would have most certainly ended slavery entirely even if the civil war wouldnt have happened.
alhart1988 3 years ago
One final note that everyone seems to forget.. There were black slave owners as well.
alhart1988 3 years ago
Almost all of those "black slave owners" were freedmen who "bought" their family members so they wouldn't get seperated.

The message of this song is that southern people can love their southern heritage and love the United States and other brothers and sisters of the world as well. But, we must not forget our heritage. The spirit of Dixie forever opposes the idea of "Yankees Rule". We are moving to a higher plane now.

That is against true Christianity.
ohiopherks 3 years ago
I agree that Slavery is not for the best of mankind, and its time was over. However, many of us can still be "wage slaves" today. Slavery was a system that survived for thousands of years, and just died out since now it is more feasible to use "wage slaves" in society rather than people who live on your land. Racism is against the good of humanity, no doubt. But, what if other groups are being racist and successfully dominating the world? We stand against all tyranny--including racism.
