Peccato: la sceneggiata distoglie 'attenzione da Ildebrando, che canta meravigliosamente, come sempre. Non capisco che bisogno ci sia di dare questi tocchi "artistici"...
I think it's meant to be a mischievous Cupid who is manipulating everyone without their knowing it and causing misunderstandings but with the ultimate aim of furthering the cause of love.
That's exactly how I felt about the staging of this production, especially what you said about the bullying of Cherubino. It just doesn't seem like Figaro. So envious you saw D'Arcangelo sing Figaro live! I bought the DVD of this thinking I was buying CD's. Oops.
Truly a great voice! And a beautiful guy too!But ubfortunately, this production seems to be so nonsense! It's disgusting the ideas the director had in mind for this Mozart's masterpiece.D'Arcangelo has a very beautiful timbre and voice color, good diction, and interpretation, but I didn't like the breathing he took exactly at 1:59 and 2:00,before the word "rovescerò".I guess it was a little bit long and has broken the flowing of the piece, but just a very slight thing. But Congratulations!
Yes,dear!Surely I've seen it and it's good. He's better there, and Damrau is much better than Netrebko, but even though I still think Diana's voice is too heavy for Susanna, but I like her too much, and mainly singing the Queen of Night. Have you seen it?She's one of the best I've seen, specially in expression and interpretation. Very good one. And the her German? Perfect! But Susanna is a character for light sopranos. But thank you for the advice. :)
simply bad mise en scène, and this time harnoncourt is really impossible - but D'Arcangelo has the real italian voice, and the italian technique, which is so rare in Mozart (I mean the "italian" Mozart, who wrote 4 italian voices...); I've heard him as Masetto in Ferrara, Leporello in Roma and Don in Napoli: well, he gave 3 masterful interpretations and please believe: his fraseggio is A MODEL for everybody
I think he's the BEST Bass we have around! I discoverd him in a Don Giovanni w/Alvarez in the title role & this guy(Ildebrando d'Arcangelo)as Leporello & he stole the show!!! I specifically bought the DVD for Alvarez & I ended up watchin' this guy throughout the whole opera instead:) Alvarez was still good...I just like this guy better! Rene Pape is great, but at times he's just too WOOFY for me! That kind of voice should be singing Wagner or in Don Giovanni, the ghost of the father! Perfect:-)
i really don't think he's bass though...bass-baritone i would call him. he sings the toreador song and that is very high for real bass. he also sings the count in figaro.
if he is a bass though he is kind of in the same fach as ghiaurov, though ghiaurov had a much darker voice than d'arcengelo's
anyways, i've seen him live and he is great. you should hear his "cinta di fiori" on youtube
I'm a fan of artistic expression and interpretation but when you lose the meaning and confuse the audience with this kind of experimental nonsense, it's a slap in the face to the music and work of the people presenting it! I don't know what the director wanted but it's definitely lousy!!!
I guess the director didn't trust da Ponte and Beaumarchais, and their ability to get the story across? Or did he think the audience was too witless to hear the irony in Mozart's music?
There is not an opera in the repertory that is there because of the director's inane ideas and ego; they remain in the rep because of the music and the libretto.
Harnoncourt è sempre riconoscibile per i suoi tempi sempre, sempre eccentrici.un direttore che non riesce a dire niente di nuovo se non allargare i tempi, appesantire tutto e sempre! Basta, basta!
This production is so wrong.... Mozart would certainly be surprised about this interpretation. I mean, come on.. a dark Nozze? The entire opera looks and feels like a huge funeral. Who was the artistic director? Shameful!
I dont understand this production too, i love netrebko and i love d'arcangelo but... i dont like this... I dont think that this is what Mozart wanted for this opera...
Seriously, i'm not a conservative and on stage i always do what people ask me to do but, poor d'Arcangelo, he is a great singer, this is not fair. I just have the impression he want to escape.
The opening looked JUUUST a tad bit gay until I realized that D'arcangelo didn't actually SEE this "guardian angel"(???) leading him on. (No pun intended.)
Ildebrando d'Arcangelo is so, so good! He has a beautifully resonant voice, excellent diction and thoughtful phrasing; I could listen to him all day. I only hope I get the chance to see him live!
the "cherub" was a mute figure in this production who expressed the characters feelings and tried to influence their acting by holding their "strings". i guess the idea came from "cherubino" and their clothes were the same too, but its not him.
i thought it was an interesting and original idea
Is that Cupid or based on the idea of Cherubino as a cherub?

Rich timbre - I don't comprehend the staging at all...
Interesting just the same.

They shouldn't need a Cupid to show how love is leading them on. It should come out easily with the plot and singers.

I don't understand the angel.schoolboy here. It takes the focus away from Figaro and is, frankly, an odd distraction from the singer.

Ok! I know she's German, and that's why I said it! But she was best as the Queen in interpretation, expressiveness. Not indeed in voice!

Don't think it's an angel. Cupid (love) rather. Figaro is being blinded and manipulated by his feelings of jealousy. This is what love makes you do.

Damn this version sucks! Bryn Terfel is the only singer that should be allowed to perform this now a days. he blows everyone else away.
MichaelLevine 4 years ago
I don't understand why you would say that. Ildebrando D'Arcangelo has an incredibly deep and powerful voice and he interprets the role beautifully.
I don't think Bryn Terfel sings it better, it's just a different voice, a different interpretation.
I like them both.

this guy is a true blower. Bryn sings with class and unmistakable beauty. best opera singer in the world presently.
MichaelLevine 4 years ago
I think Bryn would be glad to know he has such a dedicated fan, but would prefer you to have a little bit more class too.
liyzette 4 years ago
I almost had the opportunity to sing with Bryn last year.
D'Arcangelo has such a forced voice! so melodramatic. he also is flat when the tempo increases, and is off beat many times in this song.
MichaelLevine 4 years ago 4
typical!
Whay would that angel be gay? And what if... by the way?
I saw the whole opera and found the staging original and rather cute.
wimpie1972 4 years ago
I dont mind modern stuff, but there must be something i'm missing. Can someone explain why a gay man with wings is fondling figaro?
