I read the book "One Second After" - it describes how our lives would be altered by an EMP nuk detonated in our atmosphere..it is fiction and it makes you think about all the little things we take for granted..antibiotics, insulin, food and security. If all electronics in the world stopped there would be no way to produce medication, ship it, store it package it. Just made me realize that these folks might be more prepared then most but that doesn't make them crazy, just better informed. IMHO
Love how at the end of each story, they are given a "report card" and we the viewers are told in every single instance that these people are nuts..cause the possibility of a .. "emp, oil shortage, economic collapse..etc isn't plausible, possible or ever gonna happen cause A. B or C are covering it..meaning..don't prepare and let the government take care of you ..thats right...go back to sleep and keep believing that they aren't covering their butts..I'd rather be prepared - who is it hurting?

Your wife is also forced to resign from work to sit with you at home to take care of you as a full time job. Your 9 years old daughter is looking at you and says: Dad I am hungry and we have nothing to eat.

Like all reality TV shows, they try and find the most outrageous, over the top people to show the world this goes on. I found the show quite interesting and it makes you totally think about just normal things that go on instead of the end of the world scenario. I found some of the canning and food storage of meats prep to be fascinating, and want to learn those techniques in food storage. It's one of those, oh wow, I had no idea you could do some of this stuff!! Love the show.
this show is a psy-op to make preppers look like total whack-jobs and crazies. it tells the unprepared masses exactly what they wanna hear, that preppers are crazy, and NOTHING will ever happen.
they try to be sly as they discredit all the preppers, and the catastrphies they prep for. the last thing you hear on the show is the announcer telling you that the events discussed are impossible, will never happen, go back to sleep.
Some people's response to this stuff is pretty funny. Most "preppers" don't necessarily believe the world is gonna end in 2012. Most folks that do "prep" are pretty normal about it and do it as a means of insurance in case something does happen. There are obviously people who are obsessed with something happening and prepping for it. But most of us just have a good plan and a little bit of insurance. I like the show because some of it hits angles people havent thought of.

Heres my question about all of this. If the world is indeed going to end....and I mean if it really fucking ends....then what are these people hoping to survive? If the Earth becomes some level of a decimated wasteland, then there will be nothing left for anyone to survive for. It may take several hundred years for the Earth to recooperate from this, and all of these preppers and their offspring will be dead before that time anyway.
@RoninHawk Yea, because things like hurricanes, cold fronts where people lose all power and roads become impassible, and earthquakes never happen. Plus with how our country is being run at the moment hyper inflation is a possibility. Those few things alone could lead to weeks if not months of lost of civil services if serious enough. And hyper inflation would affect the whole country, not just a region affected by a severe natural disaster. When people get hungry, they get desperate.

Some commenters should be aware that MOST preppers don't think "It's the end of the world" and they aren't crazy. There are things that can happen realistically which would make a drastic impact on the way we live, hyper-inflation, nuclear attack from a country like Iran, etc. None of these scenarios are unrealistic or "crazy". A prepper is merely stocking supplies and learning skills needed IN CASE something did happen, just like you buy car insurance IN CASE of an accident. Its responsibility

This show was not made for preppers, it was made for the majority of society and for ratings!
Yet another attempt to oversensationalize folks who try to provide for themselves and thier family instead of staking there lives on someone else to help them out. Granted there are extreames to every person but the huge majority of preppers are down to earth commen sense folk who would rather be prepared for trouble BEFORE trouble starts.
Rarely does a media outlet -- even one as reputable as National Geographic -- portray preppers in a truthful light. By nature, media is compelled to sensationalize in order to raise viewing statistics which, in turn, boils down to the almighty dollar. Hence, preppers are more likely to be painted as some sub-species of extremists whose anxiety finds voice through guns and a manifest desire for end-of-the-world scenarios.
For most preppers nothing could be further from the truth.

Like all reality TV shows, they try and find the most outrageous, over the top people to show the world this goes on. I found the show quite interesting and it makes you totally think about just normal things that go on instead of the end of the world scenario. I found some of the canning and food storage of meats prep to be fascinating, and want to learn those techniques in food storage. It's one of those, oh wow, I had no idea you could do some of this stuff!! Love the show.

this show is a psy-op to make preppers look like total whack-jobs and crazies. it tells the unprepared masses exactly what they wanna hear, that preppers are crazy, and NOTHING will ever happen.
they try to be sly as they discredit all the preppers, and the catastrphies they prep for. the last thing you hear on the show is the announcer telling you that the events discussed are impossible, will never happen, go back to sleep.

Some people's response to this stuff is pretty funny. Most "preppers" don't necessarily believe the world is gonna end in 2012. Most folks that do "prep" are pretty normal about it and do it as a means of insurance in case something does happen. There are obviously people who are obsessed with something happening and prepping for it. But most of us just have a good plan and a little bit of insurance. I like the show because some of it hits angles people havent thought of.

Heres my question about all of this. If the world is indeed going to end....and I mean if it really fucking ends....then what are these people hoping to survive? If the Earth becomes some level of a decimated wasteland, then there will be nothing left for anyone to survive for. It may take several hundred years for the Earth to recooperate from this, and all of these preppers and their offspring will be dead before that time anyway.

@RoninHawk Yea, because things like hurricanes, cold fronts where people lose all power and roads become impassible, and earthquakes never happen. Plus with how our country is being run at the moment hyper inflation is a possibility. Those few things alone could lead to weeks if not months of lost of civil services if serious enough. And hyper inflation would affect the whole country, not just a region affected by a severe natural disaster. When people get hungry, they get desperate.

Furthermore, preppers like to use Katrina as an excuse for their silliness, despite the fact that Katrina's effect happened under very specific circumstances that likely wont occur in their area.

@RoninHawk Yes but for instance I live in southern california and we are overdue for an 8.0 or higher, and that could seriously hinder food supply to much of the state, having some weapons and extra food and water could never hurt anyone, and neither could prepping to these levels to be self sustainable. Some people just want to take it farther than others for peace of mind, it doesn't mean they're crazy.

Yes, actually it does. Because they lack that peace of mind, without it. Now dont get me wrong, I see nothing wrong with keeping an extra stash of food, water, and ammo, to last a couple weeks or so. But to actually stockpile above and beyond, in order to survive some unknown impending doom that may very well never come......

Some commenters should be aware that MOST preppers don't think "It's the end of the world" and they aren't crazy. There are things that can happen realistically which would make a drastic impact on the way we live, hyper-inflation, nuclear attack from a country like Iran, etc. None of these scenarios are unrealistic or "crazy". A prepper is merely stocking supplies and learning skills needed IN CASE something did happen, just like you buy car insurance IN CASE of an accident. Its responsibility

@FrAgMaN007 Yeah...I know Iran isn't ready with nuclear capabilities yet, but they're not too far off and intelligence officials said they'd be willing to attack the US. Would they have the balls to? Probably not. Could we cut off an attack before it happened? I'd like to think so. But all it takes is 1 high altitude nuclear missile to shoot out an EMP that could change life as we know it. So when I said Iran, it was more of a look down the road, not at present.

Folks, it makes little sense to continue preaching virtues of 'Preparation' to those want no part of it. They will find any reason, no matter how nonsensical, to refute any justifications you present.
The best way to approach this is to be the Good Example. Be the person with the level head. Be the person with eyes wide open. Be the person with an objective understanding of history & world events. Be the person who simply explains what they're doing & why without trying to sell something.

Guess where those desperate people will make a beeline to; her house!

It was actually a show like this that encouraged me to get things like a gas mask, nbc suit, fill a bug out bag, stock up on some ammo. I can't really buy all that food but I have all the bug out stuff. It isn't crazy to have something like that stored in a closet. The government actually promotes being prepared for natural and man made disasters, so I dunno what the big deal is.

They will find the most extreme examples and the ones that belong in a mental hospital and portray them as the normal prepper. So that way there will be a (bigger) social stigma attached to prepping. "Oh you're a prepper, like those loons on TV?"..... Causing people interested in becoming a prepper to shy away in fear of being labeled "crazy". Rarely does a media outlet -- even one as reputable as National Geographic -- portray preppers in a truthful light. By nature, media is compelled to sensationalize in order to raise viewing statistics which, in turn, boils down to the almighty dollar. Hence, preppers are more likely to be painted as some sub-species of extremists whose anxiety finds voice through guns and a manifest desire for end-of-the-world scenarios.
For most preppers nothing could be further from the truth.
