I remember my Mum introducing me to these films when they were on television, crikey, they seemed old then and this was the mid 50's!! We used to sit there laughing at them, I would be about eight or nine. Forgotten just how funny Arthur Lucan was as Old Mother Riley. I am sure there were a few Old Mother Riley Films?
This is part of the music hall sketch known as 'Brigettes Night Out', performed by Lucan and McShane. However, I have seen other variations of it, so this is not the only surviving film recording of that sketch.
This version is possibly taken from the original Old Mother Riley film, variously known as 'Old Mother Riley' or as 'The Return of Old Mother Riley', but it might be from the 1934 Royal Command Performance.
Oh - I've never laughed so much for such a long long time... I haven't seen 'Old Mother Riley' for SO many years, and was wondering if she was quite as funny as I remembered her as a child. (and yes - I do know it was really a man - but what a talent as I still can't think of 'Old Mother Riley' as anything more than a very comical old washer-woman) Thanks for Posting this wonderful clip - I've now just got to buy the Box Set of DVDs after watching this! LOL
Seems like a sweet old lady...but, heavens to murgatroid, she was one homely gal! Pretty spry ol' dame though! I think Don Knotts must have been the love child of this woman & actor Rondo Hatton! :)THANK YOU very much for posting this delightful "blast from the past" for us to enjoy! :)
There is a definite diference in humor style of Mother Riley from the 1930's to the 1950's.

It's a pity the soundtrack is a half-second ahead of the film.
Can someone please syncronise this better?

it6s nice to remember humor that was clean ,inoccent and funny, unlike todays sick humour. we were all so happy in those days.
