  • The middle class comments amused me

  • Southern was still stuck in 1950s Britain - no wonder they lost the franchise.

  • We didnt get in-vision continuiy in Yorkshire, NEVER!!!! Do NOT Generalise!!!

  • Southern Television - The Station that's stuck in the 60s

  • I can see why Southern was closed down it seemed so old even for 1980. Barring Worzel Gummidge

    .

  • Mr. Coleman, your work is absolutely superb and what a knowledge base! All we can say is, "How!" Thank you for many hours of entertainment from those of us who adore this sort of thing. Kind regards.

  • I thought I'd always imaginated, 'Under Manning', as a TV programme, but obviously it did exist!!

  • "Your Uncle Frank" ought to be "your Uncle Keith" - Keith Martin worked as a continuity announcer for more ITV franchises than I care to remember, although ABC, Anglia, Southern, TVS and LWT are the ones that spring to mind.

In those days, Bernard Manning was probably thought of as "irreverent" rather than a "racist, sexist, chauvinist pig", therefore Southern saw nothing wrong in showing his act. Besides, he was Northern, and any criticism could be rebuffed with that argument.

  • I thought DC Thompson also owned shares in Scottish, but I could be wrong.

  • You have got Southern TV to a T! The home of the middle-classes. My posh brother lives down there and I hated going to see them and having to watch boring old Southern TV!

  • It's interesting how bitter Southern was about losing their contract, because surely ATV was a much greater loss?

  • Funny how on that map you forgot to shade the isle of wight red.

  • They could have done, but hey, lets be frank, who cares about the IOW?

  • @darrowby1972 I do, my girlfriend lives there when she's home (we're both at the same uni), and it's a beautiful place!

  • I reckon you should do Anglia in the face next or BBC childrens programming in the 80's?

  • Southern actually gave a show to Bernard Manning???

  • He was big in more than one sense in those days.

  • Another winner! Great stuff again.

Yorkshire or Central for next time?

  • That's two votes for Yorkshire.

  • central

  • thx m8 for doin this

  • He was only the Cyberleader that one time. Search for "You Belong To Us. You Will Absorb Our Spillages." for the guy who did it in the eighties.

  • I always wondered what the Cyber leader looked like outside of the costume...and so that's Worzel Gummidge. I always wondered...

  • Ooh! My region!

I'm old enough to remember TVS. And I can just about remember in-vision continuity.

    And yes, I'm firmly middle-class.
