omg- I grew up with this craziness- lol- if you could parrot scripture you won a prize- ughhhh - well meaning clergy but misquided methods- live and learn and remember
@charmedcripchic I memorized a great deal of Scripture. During the hard parts of life, especially when my husband died, God's Word has been my greatest comfort.
My family was from the same area and era of this show. I was Elizabeth's age and my sister was Erin's age when we watched the prime time premier of this Christmas special. Happy memories.
My sister and I grew up transplanted in the Boston area so the Walton shows gave us a sense of home and not feeling like outsider misfits.
I forgot how sweet this was...It's been forever since I've seen it. I love the kids fussin...it was natural, not like todays shows...Glad this show is on ISPN and GMC...good show...good show
Half of the kids flew out the back door without coats, much less hats and gloves. They must have found some that "fell off a truck" on the way to the store.
"Why look to some foreign country for heathens when the Blue Ridge Mountains are filled with them? So we didn't send off our gifts to some unappreciative savages, but to you whose need is just as great. Now that is why I am here."
...oh and BTW for those who are wondering why Grandma Walton was so indignant about shooting s "sittin' still bird" any good sportsman (or woman) will tell you that it's more sporting to give the prey a chance to get away.
"A sittin' still bird...you shot a sittin' still bird!?" LMBO! One of my favorite lines in the whole movie! Love Ellen Corby! No one else could be Gradma Walton but her! (RIP)
This is a true story. This was real life, not a post-Reagan capitalist fantasy. Unfortunately, millions of Americans are discovering again what it's like when the system fails and you're on your own.
those were the good times. mother, father, children, grandparents all living together. I think we will be getting back to those days. they say everything is cyclical. with the economy the way it is you have to have more than one or two people earning money to live in a home.
The blonde girl at 14:24 is Earl Hamner's daughter. He was the writer who's family the Waltons were based on and John-Boy is based on him. I did read in another place the dark haired girl at 14:23 was his but since his son, who is blonde, is probably in the next clip I believe the blonde girl looks like him.
My sister and I laughed so hard when we first saw this in 1971, Mary Ellen calls Elizabeth a "pis ant", and then when John-Boy says "bosoms". We were kids then and those words were never used on any TV shows, but its sure is a LONG cry from what they say nowadays! There is nothing on TV today that even compares to the craftsmanship of this movie. The reality shows are despicable, sitcoms are too short lived and focus on negative values.
Lord, Mary Ellen is just as nosy in this movie as she was in the TV show!! In this movie, I wished she didn't have long to live!! Did John-Boy just say "bosoms"? Olivia is gonna wash his mouth out with soap!! I think that missionary stopped at the Baldwin house first and had 5 or 6 cups of the recipe!! It wouldn't be hard to be as pretty as Olivia in this movie, but it would be hard in the TV show!! Shouldn't Grandpa tell John-Boy NOT to run with an axe?? "We'll be good, John-Boy"!! LMAO!!
Yeah, Grandma could always be counted on to say what's on her mind; but as we all know, that caused a lot of problems!! But I guess there weren't "happy pills' back then!!
I don't have a problem with a wild animal being used to feed a family that otherwise would have no meat on the table; there's a guy at work that does that; but I don't approve of something like shooting an animal just for it's body parts!!
@scooter36able And wild animals don't have a problem eating families when they have no food on the table. Jeffrey Dahmer and Hannibal the Cannibal Lecter had no problems eating people just for the fun of it.
Why is it such a big deal to grandma that the bird might be sitting still. Seems to me that regardless of whether it was shot sitting still or store bought, a poor family would be grateful to get such a nice meal.
I don't have a problem with any wild animal being shot if the meat is going to be used to feed a family. Now if someone goes out and shoots a deer just so they can put the head or antlers on their wall as a trophy, then I think that is wrong.
@lostindiancamp that wasn't the point, the point was, Charlie was lying to her and she knew it! Back then, honesty and integrity meant something to people...especially from her era!
@timothyj1966 Yeah she seems contradictory. So if she accepted the bird because they need food even though she may know its stolen why does she have such a problem with the black man working for the Baldwin sisters when he says you do what you can if you need money and are starving.
@rothwoodcreations Yeah i was very surprized she accepted the bird for it didnt fit what I thought her character was. When John-Boy asks her where did she suppose Charlie got that bird she tells him to go milk the cow or something which made me wonder does she realize he possibly stole it and if so why would she accept it. Then she contradicts that by telling the kids they dont accept charity in this house.
Kid's respected their elder's back those days thats why I really love this movie and the Walton shows that were aired later.
