I feel that Johnny enjoys playing "odd" characters in a lot of the films he does because it's artistic. Nothing against say Will Ferrell, but all I've really seen Will do is comedy.

Part of what makes a good actor/actress GREAT is versatility. Johnny is not afraid to go outside the box to be creative & artistic.

I must say that I haven't liked most of Johnny's movies, but as an actor, he is extremely versatile and is exceptional at taking on crazy roles. Being around Johnny (in person) so much over the last month has given me respect for him as a person, rather than just the admiration I had for him as an actor since his days on 21 Jump Street. To know him in person is to realize the humble and giving person he is...not to be confused with the roles he's casted in as an actor.

Depp is one of the most respected actors alive today, a 3 time Oscar nominee who throughout his career has displayed limitless range, he is a chameleon who can transform himself into any character. Michael Mann one of the top directors in the industry cast him because Depp has a track record of great well reviewed performances. Clearly you know nothing about acting.
