I just bought a 48 chevy loadmaster and this may i will graduate from a diesel tech program. I think i need to find a diesel for my truck. Keep on truckin...
@Grigg3 Wow. I just experienced a weird coincidence. I was searching Jacobs engine brakes for the Cummins 6bt, and was led to a forum where someone was asking if they make them for the 4bt. "Grigg", whom I can only assume was you, said that they don't make them for the b-series Cummins, but you had a pic of a Jake setup on a Detroit 4-53t. That must be this engine here. As big as the internet is, its still a small world. Funny thing is, I've seen this video a few times in the past.
are you going to put a body on that thing? or is it your custom street rod i think it looks sweet without the cab but it would be cool with one as well
thanks for posting this grigg, that sounds absolutely beautiful. sorry i missed you in PA! jeep's running great now, did you see that video of the cj7 with a 3-53? check my favourites...
That thing sounds awesome. Keep posting videos! I want to do something similar someday - maybe a mid-70s 4x4 crewcab dually with one of those powerplants. :)
I heard that the jakes on the 53 series really didn't do much as far as braking. I think it's because the displacement is too small to make a decent engine brake to slow you down on grades. 92 series had better working jake brakes due to the big displacement. But really they aren't as good compared to 4 stroke diesels such as cummins or cats.
BS! They work great on the 53 series. I have owned, driven and ridden in other Detroit53 series powered trucks with Jakes, and they really do work as expected. A 53 series is two cycle, the Jake brakes are about twice as effective on a two cycle engine compared to the same displacement 4 cycle with same number of cylinders.
sounds good looks good,I have a complete 48 chassis any one interested radidator to rear end,put the cab on a 79frame,453 engine, not finished bud getting there
Jacobs made them, but not very common. My Detroit parts supplier is pretty sure they are still available new from Jacobs. I just bought some replacement parts, so some stuff is available for sure.
how exactly do you have a jake on a two stroke?

Was this a fire truck at one time? Reason I ask is that the wheels are red.
RDG484 3 years ago
No, it was a flat bed dump, and will be a flat bed again. I just wanted red wheels, and they'll eventually match the body.
