I like the fact that he announced this on the anniversary of the Pearl Harbor bombing. It's like reconciling with Japanese Americans for the wrongs done in the past.
I think what is implied there is that when you live and grow up in a place its history carries a more immediate sense. For example, I live in Nebraska, and although the pioneer and homestead movements happened here a century and a half ago, I and many Nebraskans share a kind of intimacy with that history and how it speaks to our present day selves. I don't think Obama's speech claims an objective understanding of the events of Pearl Harbor, but like me with pioneers it is a closer subjective one
no, but it makes you have a better understanding, a closeness. just like me as a californian, i have an intimacy with the history and people of california
one nomination by the Obama admin I'm actually happy about. Anyone who went against the corrupt Bush admin and spoke the truth...including against the Iraq war should be running this coming admin...not the usual crooks.
I'm not a fan of McCain or the republicans...but we should not blindly support every decision that Obama makes because his name is Obama. We need to give him a chance to prove himself before we start praising him. That's all I'm saying.
Smart, smart choice. Gen. Shinseki is no one's partisan hack. He served with honor and intelligence, spoke out prophetically about the inadequate troop levels required for Iraq, and either resigned from a mission he felt he could no longer stand behind, or was forced out by an administration that valued partisan cronyism over experience, achievement and dedication.
Obama has shown once again that he's not afraid of people who have the integrity and courage to look him in the eye and disagree.

Does Obama growing up in Hawaii really mean he understands what happened at Pearl Harbor?
