I'm all for Fragrantica for most of the reasons already mentioned, but mainly because Basenotes' website is down/offline more that it seems to be up. They really need a revamp and a move to something more reliable.
I still dont' understand why it takes SO long for new (and old) fragrances to be added - it can't be all that difficult.
I definitely prefer BN and can spend hours on surfing new frags there. Annoying that so many fragrances arent registered there though, but they use to come up eventually. They have clever reviews, a reliable swap thread etc. Love your SOTD btw, Tobacco Vanille is one of my true favorites! Tried Tuscan Leather, also from Tom Ford? /"Sartorial" on BN
If you want to buy bottles basenotes. The better wardrobe and database goes to Fragrantica. If you want to learn about notes and break a note down fragrantica hands down. For info on frags as far as reviews basenotes. Hope this helped Little man.
Fragrantica's website design is extremely "busy" and cloying to the eyes. Basenotes just seems to have a better layout and flow. And IMO it doesn't matter if the actual content on Fragrantica is actually better than Basenotes, which I'm not arguing either way. If the layout of a website is poor people aren't going to want to use it/visit it as often.
To add to that, Basenotes reviews are better written (albeit, more smug in some cases). The written reviews on Fragrantica sound too much like the BS you'd read on the Sephora website or something the lines of, "I love this stuff! Smells great!" and that's it. The forums on Basenotes are more robust, you just have to make tuning out certain people second nature when you read through it though. Fragrantica isn't as organized and most of the members are women. However, it's more relaxed than BN.
Information wise, Fragrantica is on point. Fragrantica also added a feature where you can vote on appropriate times of the day and seasons to wear a particular fragrance. Also, you can vote on which notes are predominant too. However, Basenotes seems to have the edge when it comes to making your wardrobe list and the rating system is more simplistic for you to use.
However, due to the sheer volume of traffic, I suppose, Basenotes tends to go down or lag way more often than Fragrantica.
well personaly i like fragrantica , its a more freindlyer comunity and the reveiws are more understandable , basenotes reveiws are more in deph witch are tiresome trying to read them and the majority of the ppl on basenotes are uptight frag. lover and bash on some frags. that are accualy good smelling to an avrage joe , so some times the reveiw missleads you and end up not trying the frag. out ! so fragrantica wins !!
The fragrance reviews on Basenotes are more in-depth, and I like their forum section. Learned a lot of things there, like layering w/ lotion to increase scent longevity and trying out some women's perfume on myself (avoidin' most florals, mind you :P). Fragrantica I like because of their uptodate news and articles (liking their Raw Materials section a lot).
For me personally basenotes, because I love their wardrobe... The only sad thing about it that it takes usually more than a year for a new fragrance to be added and a looot is still missing...
@Kruemel952 Awesome. However I gotta get to sleep I'm so tired it's now like 1am so I gotta get some sleep. Lol. Soft I know. Ill watch it first thing when I wake up. Looking forward to it.
fragrantica is the better site...more level headed ppl. there are too many snobs on basenotes. plus the basenotes website always crashes and take like a hour to load all the time.im gonna start my ow fragrance site called topnotes.com.
Basenotes is good for a read and opinions on frags. My sotd was Fahrenheit. I wore tobacco vanille the other day and my gf hated it lol. She said i stank like old lady mixed with old man. Out of all the frags i own, Aventus by creed and Bleu by chanel gets me the most compliments.
My SOTD is Acqua Di Parma's Colonia Assulta (for reviewing purposes) ... Basenotes for the wardrobe feature/better forum for discussions. Fragrantica is more up to date with new fragrances and news... both excellent sites
@robes08 Awesome. Looking forward to seeing you review again. Are you going to start video reviews in August? I gotta check out the Acqua Di Parma house. Both websites are fantastic. Thanks for commenting Marc =)
I'm going trout fishing with some buddies so my sotd will be fishy LOL. I'm a member of both sites. I go to basenotes just to read forum posts and update my wardrobe....I only use fragrantica to get info and read reviews on frags
I like Basenotes, don't bother with Fragrantica much just coz I'm used to the format, the regular users and their tastes.SOTD Jubilation XXV.That Tobacco vanille is expensive stuff,do u find its linear or interestingly complex? Whats the longevity like?Cheers..
@Amyth1 It's kind of linear.Your gonna get Honey, tobacco and vanilla. I'll have to test it out a lot more though. The longevity is fantastic. I get about 14hrs no joke. It's pretty awesome. It projects like a beast also. Thanks for the comment.
I think the best community is (or will be) the recently launched parfumo.net - fast servers, amazing perfume index, cool features
