It's a real shame the stupid studio didn't have Clayton Moore in this movie. He could had played dual roles. The Ranger's father & or his grandfather/ the old propspector later. Who mined their silver mine & made his silver bullets for him.
There is only one "Lone Ranger." His name was Clayton Moore. If you grew up with him in the 50's you'd know what I mean. They don't make them like this any more.
I saw this movie and it was okay but no way near the quality it could have been.
The ending was all wrong (as we all remember) in that: Who was that masked man? .... He's the Lone Ranger.........Hiyo Silver away. Ever wonder why this was Klinton Spillsbury only movie? They even had to dub his voice for it. Clayton Moore was the ony real Lone Ranger. John Hart never came close but was okay though. At least Hart was better than Klint was. We need our heroes back.
I'm 62 years old and will always identify Clayton Moore as being the official Lone Ranger. However, I know the 1981 film was not a success, but time can sometimes work things out. I especially loved the scene where the Lone Ranger is trying to ride Silver, and there is a shot of his butt as it rises up and slams down on the saddle. He even makes a grunt as his butt hits the saddle.
Loved this film when I was a kid..the John Barry Score is awesome. Wish we could hear Klinton Spilsburys orginal voice. It would be awesome if they ever make a dvd to have a no narration option cuz it sort of is embarrasing now. The only thing I don't like about the movie now is that its too dark. An overlooked film...Problem was other than Jason Robards as U.S. Grant and Christopher Lloyd as Cavendish (he was on "Taxi" at the time and people didn't know what to think) you needed a bankable name, and Clint Spillsbury wasn't it, nor was Juanin Clay (lovely though she was) and the film has relegated itself to "CULT" status...
Continued... As stated, the studio made Mr Moore stop being the Lone Ranger and sued him. This did not sit well with his fans, and made people hate the studio producing the movie who showed their displeasure by boycotting the movie. As a film, I thought it was OK considering that I was not really a Lone Ranger fan. But the Score by John Williams is what got my attention, and in my opionion is what saved the movie. But it had good performances all around. Would like to have the soundtrack.
I was one of the few people who saw this movie when it came out, and I now understand why. After doing some digging, the studio dumb asses sued Clayton Moore, the original Lone Ranger who was appearing around the country as the Lone Ranger. He's has been doing it for years with now problems, signing autographs, doing supermarket openings, that sort of thing and being a all around POSITIVE ROLE MODEL!! But the studio took exception to this and made him stop being the Lone Ranger.
@careyleefisher I don't know why this movie is underrated. I saw it in the 80's and I loved it. Since I was I kid my hero was The Lone Ranger, I even had a custome (without horse of course) but complete.
@shigenobu0 I have always loved this movie, shigenobu0. The cinematography and the score are terrific. I always thought that Klinton Spilsbury received a lot of unwarranted criticism. I thought he was a terrific choice for The Lone Ranger. I also love the costume design for The Lone Ranger. I thought it was a great improvement over the costume used in the tv series with Clayton Moore. The look of the costume in the movie seemed more realistic than the bright blue costume worn by Clayton Moore.
I recently caught this on ENCORE WESTERNS for the first time in 20 years. Love the ending when the William Tell overture kicks in for the chase w/ Christopher Lloyd.
I remember how pumped up us kids were back in 1980 when we heard a new version was coming out, and disappointed how it was screwed up.
Come on, the Lone Ranger is supposed to have really been a ranger, but not in this version.
I remember reading an old issue of Creepy where a werewolf was terrorizing the frontier. After saving a little boy's life by killing the werewolf, the Lone Ranger explained that was the real reason why he used silver bullets.
This definitely was a good movie and this is a really nice video tribute. As a fan and collector of old time radio I can definitely say that thats the voice of Fred Foy, who announced the series for almost the entire run on radio and TV. Nice job!
My grandson Noah who is 3 yrs old loves this movie. we always have to rewind it and watch it again. Thank you so much! You should see his eyes light up when he hears the music. Now my 1 yr old granddaughter Madalyn starts getting excited when she hears the music.
Fantastic, tmbuse! There is something very pure about the Lone Ranger that young people seem to latch on to. Thank you for the kind words and thank you so much for taking the time to comment on the video. I sincerely appreciate it.

You are very welcome, OaGuardian. Thank you for posting a response to the video.
I also hope there is an eventual Lone Ranger movie but things are not looking very good about that.
They announced that Johnny Depp had signed on to play Tonto but then things got very quiet about that project and there has not been any news since then.
Let's keep our fingers crossed that a new Lone Ranger will ride again someday!
Home because of the blizzard here in NJ and I just got the movie (the mail does go thru) It looks beautiful in widescreen and sounds great in 2 channel stereo.....I recommend it....Highly!!
Outstanding Carey....I downloaded the movie to the laptop & of course only the end credits were in WS..but alas as you see in my repvious post it's now avail in WS....I already ordered it.
Thanks for taking the time to comment on the video, cidergame. So glad you liked the video and it's always great to hear from a fellow Lone Ranger fan!
I loved this movie when it came out. Too bad it made such a poor showing in the theaters. I saw it on TV and fell in love with it. Too bad Klinton Spilsbury fell off the face of the earth afterwards. This movie was way under rated.
you rock. this is my favorite western as a kid. Hollywood did a great thing here but has gone downhill morally with television in general.. just my opinion
Thank you so much, sunwarrior! I am so glad you liked the video. Thank you for taking the time to let me know how much you liked it! I really appreciate it!
This movie was very good, and I enjoyed it very much. Considering that I was not really a Lone Ranger Fan. I remember first seeing this movie when I was young and I thought that the Soundtrack which I think was Created by the great John Barry only made a good movie better. I would like to see the soundtrack posted of this movie as well to complete the experience of reliving some better days in this country.
awesome! are you sure this was a fan made trailer? its seems so professional, very well done, makes this movie look cool, now i want to watch it again.
I am 100% sure this is fan made because I am the one that did it . Thank you so much for the great compliments and thanks so much for taking the time to post a comment. I really love this movie and you should really take another look at the movie without dwelling on all the controversy surrounding it. It is currently running on Showtime this month in widescreen.
What happened to Klinton Spilsbury...the guy who played the part of the Lone Ranger?? He dropped off the map after this movie because his acting skills stunk out loud. Nobody has ever heard from him since.
Also, what did not "help" this movie at time IMHO, was the fact that a movie similiar in tone, that became a classic, was released earlier that summer. Know what it was? RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK.
ROTLA set a standard for old time movie making, that this film just could not match, which probably did not help it. Also, the bad press, and the way the producers treated Clayton Moore was awful, and they deserved their comeupance. I just hope in the new one, little CGI, and more old moviemaking
Just to let people know who can't get the DVD for some reason. Netflix is currently offering this movie for streaming as well for Netflix streaming devices, so put it in your Que.
Also, when it comes too producers, most of them are liars and the dubbing by James Keach came as a result of Klinton wanting money for the redub, which he should be entitled too for the extra work.
The movies itself is pretty good, but not great. Definitely worth a look. Got a bad rap at the time(1981).
brounbuck, I could not agree with you more. The producers threw Klinton under the bus simply because Klinton felt he should be compensated for all the extra work required to re dub the film.
The film was shot on location and much of the soundtrack had to be re done. Pay close attention to the film and you will hear that much of the movie, not just Klinton's voice, was dubbed over.
Producers will absolutely lie and pass the blame in a second.
The Ranger was my boyhood hero and I was appalled by what they did to Clayton Moore prior to the movie release. The mivie itself was a dud. I wanted to like it, because I wanted a new generation of kids to see him. Alas, the movie killed the franchise.
I did feel sorry for Klinton Spilsbury. He ende up in a no-win situation and was really clobbered.
I think everyone was appalled by the way Clayton Moore was treated by the producers of "The Legend Of The Lone Ranger". The shoddy treatment of Mr. Moore and the legal actions they took to ban Mr. Moore from wearing the mask for personal appearances was cold and heartless.
From what I have found out about Klinton Spilsbury the producers didn't treat him any better than they treated Mr. Moore. I think Mr. Spilsbury was absolutely in a no-win situation.
Respectfully, Clayton Moore was not the only actor to play the Lone Ranger. The Lone Ranger has been portrayed by Lee Powell, Robert Livingston, Tex Hill, Clayton Moore, John Hart and Klinton Spilsbury.
Mr. Moore may be the actor most identified with the role but he was hardly the sole actor to portray the Lone Ranger. Thanks for the comment, frostypo. I appreciate it even if you and I disagree.
your list is slighty inaccurate.after john hart it`s clayton moore again.the sorry excuse for the silver bullets in the new movie"makes them fly straighter."WTF!as we all know it`s a symbol of the purity of his cause, bringing justice to the west.
Thanks, holmsatlarge! So glad you enjoyed the video even if you did not enjoy the movie. I actually like the movie but I can totally understand why so many people, including you, do not.
the lone ranger isn`t even THE LONE RANGER..he`s his younger brother from the east,a lawyer.jay silverheels brought a quiet dignity to TONTO,not flippancy.the "hip, modern"take didn`t work.thanks for the reply.
Just finished watching this film for the first time. It really wasn't that bad. Honestly, if the whole fiasco with Clayton Moore hadn't happened, I have the feeling that the film may have done better.
And on a side note, the DVD transfer is CRAP!!! It looked like it was taken from a VHS copy of the film. Still, at least it's on DVD finally.
Yeah, I heard the video quality was really lacking of the DVD. I totally agree with you about the Clayton Moore fiasco. I think that really hurt this film before it even opened.
Trust me, the quality is REALLY bad. It has a sort of hazy or soft focus lens look to it the whole time. I am glad, however, to finally see this film after hearing all the bad stuff about it.
The rumored new film could be good, but I really don't see Clooney or Depp playing the Lone Ranger or Tonto at all. Especially Clooney, who will most likely try to turn it into an anti something or other film like he always does. Depp too.
great video!!! I love this movie I wish it was on dvd widescreen. I look on ebay every couple months to see if some one has it but nothing. will this ever be on dvd? how did you get it widescreen I have the vhs but I want the dvd.
Actually, the movie is finally available on DVD. Not sure if it is widescreen or not but you can now add "The Legend Of The Lone Ranger" to your DVD collection. I got my copy from a torrent last year. So glad you liked my video! Thanks for replying!
Thank you for posting this. I haven't seen this movie since it came out in the early 80's. The part after the ranger massacre when the narrator says,"BLOODY BROTHERS SIDE BY SIDE", always stuck in my head. It was a great movie!
Thanks for doing this video. Saw the movie at theater in Spearfish, South Dakota with my parents in 1981. We were visiting the Black Hills that year. At the time, we lived in Casper, Wyoming.
Her name was Juanin Clay. She also appeared in "WarGames" and was almost cast as WIlma Deering in "Buck Rogers in the 25th Century". The role of WIlma went to Erin Gray but Juanin Clay actually appeared in an episode of "Buck Rogers" called "Vegas In Space".
Juanin Clay died in 1995 at the age of 45.
The cause of her death is disputed. Some sources say she died of breast cancer, however the user-edited Internet Movie Database site says her death was caused by a heart ailment.
This is the Movie that took me back to yesteryear! To see the legend unfold and the dastardly Butch Cavendish's evil plot take shape, watching the famed 7th Cav to the rescue and lastly the crowning finally(cue the music)as the Lone Ranger bests Butch mano e' mano !! I can't thank you enough for the memories, well done, amigo. I personally enjoyed the movie and rarely do I heed the critics.
I could not have summed up "The Legend Of The Lone Ranger" any better than that, NamVet! It appears that you and I love that movie for the same reasons. Pure, simplistic escape to yesteryear when the hero wore a white hat and fought for justice.
Thanks so much for the comment and the compliment! But, most of all, thank you for all that you did for this country, amigo!
You are too kind,I was 19 and very idealistic. But I do appreciate the thanks because of that era and how the Veterans were treated so horribly, my son (3rd Gen. Vet) returned from Iraq relatively unscathed and was welcomed home by all.
I saw this movie at the theater when it came out, and while it isn't oscar material, it wasn't as bad as all that. I loved the old b&w series as a child. And this video was nice and very well done. good job!
Like you, I saw "The Legend Of The Lone Ranger" during it's original theatrical run (Opening day ) and I fell in love with this movie. While I agree it is not Oscar material (Although I think many Oscar winners of the past and present hardly qualify as Best Picture) I think it is an enjoyable film and brings back really fond memories for me. Thank you for the comment on my video. I really appreciate it!
Great job putting this together. I watched it today on DVD for the first time (yes, I know Full Screen sucks but it's better than nothing) with my son. This actor who played John Reid/Lone Ranger only made this one movie and thats it. This movie came out in 1981, of course it's not going to be blockbuster but I found it enjoyable in the theater back then as well as today.
Thanks for the nice comment! I always appreciate people actually taking time to let me know what they think of the video I put together. By the way, what did your son think of the movie?
He is 2 years old, so he liked the horses, train and the music (William Tell Overture he really got a kick out of). When I played this video you made he stopped playing with his cars and came right over to see where the music was coming from. You should check out some of his videos, he really is something else. How did you put this music video together? Must of took you a long time.
While the fluttery, black hair looks sexy in a cheesy romance cover sort of way, I have to point out that the Potawatami only wore their hair like that when they were mourning a spouse. Otherwise, it was braided or tied up somehow.
The movie was beautifully shot. Klinton just didn't fit the role. I picture the Lone Ranger to be world-weary and a bit more masculine and tough as nails.
Klinton Spilsbury was such a poor actor, his voice was dubbed over by actor James Keech. He has never starred in another film or television program since the epic failure of this movie. That being said, I actually enjoyed The Legend of the Lone Ranger. I thought it was a great introduction to the character for a new generation. Much better than that made for TV movie they had a few years ago. That was complete crap.
The movie was just ok. And Clayton Moore was better than John Hart. He had better presence. John Hart wasn't as believeable as a man who lived off of theland and defended the weak and trampled upon.
The fucking DVD for this movie is not widescreen!!!!! ITS FUCKING FULL SCREEN, I'M SOOO PISSED OFF!!! I REALLY LOVED THIS MOVIE WHY THE FUCK DIDN'T THEY MAKE IT IN WIDESCREEN, WE SHOULD ALL COMPLAIN!!!
Before everyone get all hostile with me about "attacking" Clayton Moore let me say I was not attacking him. I like Clayton Moore. I just want people to tell me what makes him the definitive Lone Ranger for so many people. I am really interested in hearing your thoughts.
Can someone tell me why they think Clayton Moore is so much better as the Lone Ranger? I know that he is the Lone Ranger that a lot of people grew up with by can you honestly say that Moore was a good actor? I mean he seemed like a very nice man and I am not saying anything bad about him because I liked him too but he was very wooden and very monotone when he delivered his lines. I like Moore as much as the next guy but to it's hard to say he was a better actor than Spilsbury or John Hart.
I can't believe people liked this Lone Ranger version. It's terrible. Klinton Spilsbury plays the Lone Ranger and he sounded so bad they re-dubbed his voice with James Keach (husband of Jane Seymour.)
Actually, there is no proof that Klinton Spilsbury gave a bad performance. People involved with the making of "The Legend Of The Lone Ranger" said that Spilsbury had a normal voice with a mid western accent and gave a fine performance. People always say that Spilsbury was a lousy actor but how do we know that when we never heard his voice. I think James Keach is as much to blame for phoning in his performance. It's Keach's acting we hear not Spilsbury.
Just to let everyone know, a new "Lone Ranger" movie was announced by Disney yesterday. The creative team behind the "Pirate Of The Caribbean" films are involved and Johnny Depp, who is part Cherokee, will be playing Tonto. Still no word on who the new Lone Ranger will be. Bruckheimer and company made pirates cool and relevant to modern audiences with the "Pirates Of The Caribbean" films. Let's hope they can do the same with "The Lone Ranger".
This came out when I was like 6 years old, and I still remember it (but not much). Would LOVE to get it on DVD, but I didn't know it was availalbe. It'd be crazy to finally see it again!

P54cause 1 year ago

Let's keep our fingers crossed that a new Lone Ranger will ride again someday!

gargoyle2bad4u 2 years ago
Oh, my word -- the Lone Ranger and Tonto must be fleeing a Gorn at 0:03.
Kirok 2 years ago
Also, what did not "help" this movie at time IMHO, was the fact that a movie similiar in tone, that became a classic, was released earlier that summer. Know what it was? RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK.
ROTLA set a standard for old time movie making, that this film just could not match, which probably did not help it. Also, the bad press, and the way the producers treated Clayton Moore was awful, and they deserved their comeupance. I just hope in the new one, little CGI, and more old moviemaking
brounbuck 2 years ago
Just to let people know who can't get the DVD for some reason. Netflix is currently offering this movie for streaming as well for Netflix streaming devices, so put it in your Que.
Also, when it comes too producers, most of them are liars and the dubbing by James Keach came as a result of Klinton wanting money for the redub, which he should be entitled too for the extra work.
The movies itself is pretty good, but not great. Definitely worth a look. Got a bad rap at the time(1981).
brounbuck 2 years ago
brounbuck, I could not agree with you more.

He ende up in a no-win situation and was really clobbered.
witness2history 2 years ago
I think everyone was appalled by the way Clayton Moore was treated by the producers of "The Legend Of The Lone Ranger". The shoddy treatment of Mr. Moore and the legal actions they took to ban Mr. Moore from wearing the mask for personal appearances was cold and heartless.
From what I have found out about Klinton Spilsbury the producers didn't treat him any better than they treated Mr. Moore. I think Mr. Spilsbury was absolutely in a no-win situation.
careyleefisher 2 years ago
That's not theLone Ranger. Clayton Moore was the Lone Ranger.
frostypo 2 years ago
Respectfully, Clayton Moore was not the only actor to play the Lone Ranger. The Lone Ranger has been portrayed by Lee Powell, Robert Livingston, Tex Hill, Clayton Moore, John Hart and Klinton Spilsbury.
Mr. Moore may be the actor most identified with the role but he was hardly the sole actor to portray the Lone Ranger. Thanks for the comment, frostypo. I appreciate it even if you and I disagree.

Still, at least it's on DVD finally.
alucard624 2 years ago
Yeah, I heard the video quality was really lacking of the DVD. I totally agree with you about the Clayton Moore fiasco. I think that really hurt this film before it even opened.
careyleefisher 2 years ago
Trust me, the quality is REALLY bad. It has a sort of hazy or soft focus lens look to it the whole time. I am glad, however, to finally see this film after hearing all the bad stuff about it.
The rumored new film could be good, but I really don't see Clooney or Depp playing the Lone Ranger or Tonto at all. Especially Clooney, who will most likely try to turn it into an anti something or other film like he always does. Depp too.

Not as bad as Hudson Hawk in terms of being a box-office bomb but still.....
I thought Klinton was decent but the over-dubbing was kinda crappy. Who was the love interest? Did she ever do any more films?
brandon074 2 years ago
Her name was Juanin Clay. She also appeared in "WarGames" and was almost cast as WIlma Deering in "Buck Rogers in the 25th Century". The role of WIlma went to Erin Gray but Juanin Clay actually appeared in an episode of "Buck Rogers" called "Vegas In Space".
Juanin Clay died in 1995 at the age of 45.
The cause of her death is disputed. Some sources say she died of breast cancer, however the user-edited Internet Movie Database site says her death was caused by a heart ailment.

I could not have summed up "The Legend Of The Lone Ranger" any better than that, NamVet! It appears that you and I love that movie for the same reasons. Pure, simplistic escape to yesteryear when the hero wore a white hat and fought for justice.

He is 2 years old, so he liked the horses, train and the music (William Tell Overture he really got a kick out of). How did you put this music video together? Must of took you a long time.

While the fluttery, black hair looks sexy in a cheesy romance cover sort of way, I have to point out that the Potawatami only wore their hair like that when they were mourning a spouse. Otherwise, it was braided or tied up somehow.
assilembrandywine 3 years ago
The movie was beautifully shot. Klinton just didn't fit the role. I picture the Lone Ranger to be world-weary and a bit more masculine and tough as nails.
deniart 3 years ago
Klinton Spilsbury was such a poor actor, his voice was dubbed over by actor James Keech. He has never starred in another film or television program since the epic failure of this movie. That being said, I actually enjoyed The Legend of the Lone Ranger. I thought it was a great introduction to the character for a new generation. Much better than that made for TV movie they had a few years ago. That was complete crap.
djh0722 3 years ago
The movie was just ok. And Clayton Moore was better than John Hart. He had better presence. John Hart wasn't as believeable as a man who lived off of theland and defended the weak and trampled upon.

Before everyone get all hostile with me about "attacking" Clayton Moore let me say I was not attacking him. I like Clayton Moore. I just want people to tell me what makes him the definitive Lone Ranger for so many people. I am really interested in hearing your thoughts.
careyleefisher 3 years ago
Can someone tell me why they think Clayton Moore is so much better as the Lone Ranger? I know that he is the Lone Ranger that a lot of people grew up with by can you honestly say that Moore was a good actor? I mean he seemed like a very nice man and I am not saying anything bad about him because I liked him too but he was very wooden and very monotone when he delivered his lines. I like Moore as much as the next guy but to it's hard to say he was a better actor than Spilsbury or John Hart.
careyleefisher 3 years ago
I can't believe people liked this Lone Ranger version. It's terrible. Klinton Spilsbury plays the Lone Ranger and he sounded so bad they re-dubbed his voice with James Keach (husband of Jane Seymour.)
RogerCG1 3 years ago
Actually, there is no proof that Klinton Spilsbury gave a bad performance. People involved with the making of "The Legend Of The Lone Ranger" said that Spilsbury had a normal voice with a mid western accent and gave a fine performance. People always say that Spilsbury was a lousy actor but how do we know that when we never heard his voice. I think James Keach is as much to blame for phoning in his performance. It's Keach's acting we hear not Spilsbury.

The creative team behind the "Pirate Of The Caribbean" films are involved and Johnny Depp, who is part Cherokee, will be playing Tonto. Still no word on who the new Lone Ranger will be.
