Sounds like you're computer does not have enough power to record while you're playing the game. Sounds like you don't have that good a graphics card or CPU. If not, RAM maybe.

oops, i accidentally pressed remove on your comment. So your machine is souped up. You said it was brand new. Does it have vista? If so, that could be the source of your problems because Vista has multiple compatibility issues with different programs. You could also try re-downloading and re-installing stepmania.

I used a program called FRAPS. Look it up on google and you will find it. It may take some getting used to before it will work, but it will work! Hope this helps! -CrazyFrengY

I'm very sorry, my website crashed due to spambots on the forum with messages totalling to 2 GB. It overloaded the server and everything on the server was removed. I'm sorry, i'll have to redownload stepmania and all the songs all over again sometime during the summer. I'll be done soon though. Sorry once again for the inconvenience!
