On the map Guardian, you can use the green back ground as a medium.

Well they way I imagine they did it is captured master chief footage from the campaign and masked around him in adobe after effects and put him in their clips of real life events. Not complicated but pretty hard work, maybe they did it differently but thats how its usually done and they way I would have done it.

They probably used something similar to green screen, but instead of it being green it would be the colour of some wall thats in halo, then put master chief in front of that wall, film all his actions in front of that, and then green (or whatever) screened in all the real life stuff
