Agree.... the most talented member on the stage is given the least respect. It's all about image for the shallow journalists. Put me on a desert island with one solo album between all of them and it will be a Hackett solo album.
@squonk61 Hey Squonk, I do feel the same way, that lolly pop singer, the shorty one, seems to be putting aside whatever the old master from the genuine original and classic Genesis sound wants to express, let alone ending the interview as if he was the chief of staff of Genesis, good thing in the history of Genesis and Rock, that the real Master elevated his own dreams and left those mediocre ones with hunger for dollars in 77 ...
they all had solo releases . except for maybe phillips , i have had mike and the mechanics , tony banks , steve hackett voyage of the acolyte , phil collins and of course peter gabriel albums, I even had their first album called " from revelations to genesis" and out of those five , Banks had the worst solo album imo.
Genesis didn't mainly change because of that Steve left!! Steve didn't have that much power when he was in the band, that was partially why he left. He'd come to Tony and say that he wanted a bigger input but Tony(that stubborn man) would ignore him. That they changed just after he left was lucky for him because then he gets more credit than the others for their early albums. I think they're all Genesis' heart and soul. The heart and soul exist in their friendship. But Tony is their brain.
My second favorite band, Phil has had a huge influence on my drumming along with Neil Peart. Don't get me wrong but it's about musicianship and musical quality, not money. RUSH aren't in yet and if anybody deserves to be there, it's RUSH. Their music has influenced so many big musicians today.
@lifrson We differ only in that RUSH is my second fave band. LOL! Okay, maybe they tie with Queen. BUT. I completely agree with you that they should be in. And, being my husband's favorite band, he'd triple that sentiment!
I think the 5 genesis members should re-group and give it one last tour... wow.. would be incredible.. to have Phil, Peter, Mike, Tony and Steve.. ;)... Good thing is they are all alive.. That would make it complete.
@Jethrofinger Sorry, but Steve was talking about Yes being inducted someday (the comment was in the context of mentioning a project with Yes bassist Chris Squire). And as an old '70s prog fan, I agree. Genesis, Gentle Giant and Yes were pretty much my early 70s school of music (along with a bunch of other, brilliant most-people-haven't-heard-of bands). Learning to play "Firth of Fifth" probably did more for my guitar playing than anything else.
Most true Genesis (prog) fans would have been extremely interested to hear about a hackett/chris squire collaboration but I'll bet more than half the people there are completely ignorant of squire and yes- great shame
Why do people seemingly insist on Genesis having a front-man? Either it's Peter's band or it's Phil's band. Guys like Fripp, Hammill or Ian Anderson are clear front-men of their bands because they wrote most of the music, but bands like Genesis (or Pink Floyd) collaborated on everything! And hell, even Pink Floyd had actual front-men during their career, but no-one seems to bother them about it.
ralphcat Is Mike Rutherford like 6 feet 8 or something? Banks is at least 6 feet and Mike towers over him. It's about fucking time these guys were inducted and hence true "MUSIC" is given the spotlight for a brief moment. Shit bands and acts like Nickleback, Daughtry, Linkin Park, Puddle of Shit, Kid Rock, Lil Wayne, Lil Bow Wow, and Creed and the majority of today's shit can FUCK THE FUCK OFF!!!!.....Oh yeah...FUCK YOU MTV!!!!!!YOU ARE A DISGRACE!!!!!!!!!!
@ralphcat Why even bother mentioning those bands? They're not going into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. And don't get down on MTV. It often played Genesis videos in the 80s and the early 90s.
Is Mike Rutherford like 6 feet 7 or something? Banks is at least 6 feet and Mike towers over him. They all look pretty damn good for 60. Phish did "Watcher" and "Reply" justice, but I would have much rather seen the 4 of them do "Los Endos" or "In That Quiet Earth/Afterglow". Anyway, it's about fucking time these guys were inducted and hence true "MUSIC" is given the spotlight for a brief moment.
After Steve left, I soon lost interest in Genesis. I never even bought "Then There Were Three." I love that Steve mentioned his collaboration with Chris Squire and said he thought Yes should be inducted. Screw the idiot that interrupted him to ask a lame question of Phil.
"Phil, Phil, Phil"... don't any of these music "journalists" know the history of this band?? They treat Steve Hackett like he's background wallpaper. While I agree the heart and soul of Genesis was Tony Banks, Steve is a unique guitarist who's stayed true to his muse, with more artistic credibility these days than the others (in fact, maybe that's WHY he's ignored by the juveniles that comprise the rock press).
In my very humble opinion Steve Hackett was the heart and soul of Genesis. After he left Genesis it has been a decline for the band (sorry fans, just my opinion). No reunions needed. Go Steve go :)
While I agree that Steve Hackett had a big influence on their sound, the real heart of Genesis was always Tony Banks. I think even Steve wouldn't dispute that. As for whether they were better with Steve there, that's a matter of taste. I think they had good music in both eras.
I get what you're saying, Tony was the main writer in their "classic" years, and Mike also wrote more than his fair share. But Mike, Phil and Tony stopped catering to their fan base once they'd had a taste of singles success, while Steve continued doing what he always loved to do, and it's paid off for him. Now, Steve gets to play with classical orchestras and play shows all over the world while Tony and Mike are completely dependent on Phil to make money in the music biz.
Your opinion is a good one. I don't share it. BUT, I respect it. To me, ALL 5 members (71-75) are the heart & soul of Genesis. They all added something special. If two different members left (other than Peter & Steve), it would have declined in a different (unknown - at this point) way. It was about the ensemble.
@TuiiYa It wasn't Steve himself, but he took the nice amps/guitars with him. Mike had to play with the guitar equivalent of pots and pans. You try making that sound atmospheric. I just feel a responsibility to explain the din of the latter albums.
@Anothersatellite I hear you too Another...i'm even aware of the electronic tricks (yes there may be a better word for "tricks"...) they've done and do on the background, and which Steve willingly admits
steve hackett seemed a little uncomfortable like he didn't really want too be here, although i guess it'd have been even more awkward if peter gabriel had shown
@pinkfloydrule27 I couldn't help thinking the current line-up see Genesis as 1983-92 and that Steve was an inconvenience up there. Of course us fans see it mainly as 70-77
Yea he was a little sour faced but cool...he mentions in the vid they will do a new genesis album....eventually! Its after the talks about solo albums
There was absolutely no mention of a new Genesis album, at all. Phil said they may release some rough recordings of old concerts eventually. He also said they are all doing a Genesis album, INDIVIDUALLY.
Yes, very rude. I guess because Phil was and is still a prolific figure in the States as a solo artist people are more interested in him than the band. It's a shame though that Steve, Mike and Tony were being ignored in favour of Phil. Even Phil seemed a little pissed off at that.
@DopeSpace9 Yes, I totally agree. He was indeed an ass to have done that to Steve! Shows how little recognition and respect Steve gets. :-( I actually had an undeserved priviledge to actually have met him here in Ottawa during his GUITAR NOIR tour at the Penguin on Elgin St. in November 1993. Man, what a night...what an experience!!! Only GENESIS member I've met till this day, which was a real thrill of a lifetime!
@DopeSpace9 Yeah, kinda feel bad for Steve. Tony, Gabriel, Phil and Mike gets all the credit, people seem to forget about Steve's importance to the band. He really was their heart and soul. His first three solo albums really showcased how brilliant he was!!
Hackett for the WIN!!!!! Playing with Chris Squire??? I gotta check this one out.
