they all had solo releases . except for maybe phillips , i have had mike and the mechanics , tony banks , steve hackett voyage of the acolyte , phil collins and of course peter gabriel albums, I even had their first album called " from revelations to genesis" and out of those five , Banks had the worst solo album imo.

Genesis didn't mainly change because of that Steve left!! Steve didn't have that much power when he was in the band, that was partially why he left. He'd come to Tony and say that he wanted a bigger input but Tony(that stubborn man) would ignore him. That they changed just after he left was lucky for him because then he gets more credit than the others for their early albums. I think they're all Genesis' heart and soul. The heart and soul exist in their friendship. But Tony is their brain.

My second favorite band, Phil has had a huge influence on my drumming along with Neil Peart. Don't get me wrong but it's about musicianship and musical quality, not money. RUSH aren't in yet and if anybody deserves to be there, it's RUSH. Their music has influenced so many big musicians today.

And as an old '70s prog fan, I agree. Genesis, Gentle Giant and Yes were pretty much my early 70s school of music (along with a bunch of other, brilliant most-people-haven't-heard-of bands). Learning to play "Firth of Fifth" probably did more for my guitar playing than anything else.

Why do people seemingly insist on Genesis having a front-man? Either it's Peter's band or it's Phil's band. Guys like Fripp, Hammill or Ian Anderson are clear front-men of their bands because they wrote most of the music, but bands like Genesis (or Pink Floyd) collaborated on everything! And hell, even Pink Floyd had actual front-men during their career, but no-one seems to bother them about it.

While I agree the heart and soul of Genesis was Tony Banks, Steve is a unique guitarist who's stayed true to his muse, with more artistic credibility these days than the others (in fact, maybe that's WHY he's ignored by the juveniles that comprise the rock press).

In my very humble opinion Steve Hackett was the heart and soul of Genesis. After he left Genesis it has been a decline for the band (sorry fans, just my opinion). No reunions needed. Go Steve go :)

While I agree that Steve Hackett had a big influence on their sound, the real heart of Genesis was always Tony Banks. I think even Steve wouldn't dispute that. As for whether they were better with Steve there, that's a matter of taste. I think they had good music in both eras.

I get what you're saying, Tony was the main writer in their "classic" years, and Mike also wrote more than his fair share. But Mike, Phil and Tony stopped catering to their fan base once they'd had a taste of singles success, while Steve continued doing what he always loved to do, and it's paid off for him. Now, Steve gets to play with classical orchestras and play shows all over the world while Tony and Mike are completely dependent on Phil to make money in the music biz.

Your opinion is a good one. I don't share it. BUT, I respect it. To me, ALL 5 members (71-75) are the heart & soul of Genesis. They all added something special. If two different members left (other than Peter & Steve), it would have declined in a different (unknown - at this point) way. It was about the ensemble.

There was absolutely no mention of a new Genesis album, at all. Phil said they may release some rough recordings of old concerts eventually. He also said they are all doing a Genesis album, INDIVIDUALLY.

Yes, very rude. I guess because Phil was and is still a prolific figure in the States as a solo artist people are more interested in him than the band. It's a shame though that Steve, Mike and Tony were being ignored in favour of Phil.  Even Phil seemed a little pissed off at that.

Shows how little recognition and respect Steve gets. :-( I actually had an undeserved priviledge to actually have met him here in Ottawa during his GUITAR NOIR tour at the Penguin on Elgin St. in November 1993. Man, what a night...what an experience!!! Only GENESIS member I've met till this day, which was a real thrill of a lifetime!
