The problem is, we don't know what to do with these people! There are thousands waiting to come in legally and then there are the boat people. We know they are escaping apalling conditions or are political refugees but we don't have infinite resources, houses, jobs etc. Such people need a lot of support as they become established in Aus and there are are so many people who want to come here. Why do they risk coming halfway around the world when there are first world countries a safer distance from where they depart?

Apparently these efforts to rescue the people in the water weren't good enough, now the refugees are protesting about it. If they pass initial health and security screenings, give them temporary protection visas. Not only would this save tax payers a lot of money, it would allow these people to work. I'm sure the government could set up an employment stream, whereby these refugees could help certain industrys that are in need of labour. i.e agriculture/farming etc.
If they do not pass initial health and security screenings, send them home. Bear in mind that sending them home is usually a ticket to death.

Your idea would work if the government was prepared to fly or send over a cruise ship to pick everyone up. Then you can sleep at night knowing there is no risk of sinking. In the process you also increase the stakes for the people smugglers and so they pack more people on more boats for more profits.

As an Aussie this is terrible and tragic and I am so sorry for their pain and loss.
The problem is, we don't know what to do with these people! There are thousands waiting to come in legally and then there are the boat people. We know they are escaping apalling conditions or are political refugees but we don't have infinite resources, houses, jobs etc. Such people need a lot of support as they become established in Aus and there are are so many people who want to come here. Very hard situation.

My in-laws who are british, who have enough of and their own money so they are not a burden on the "system" and also have a daughter living here (perm res but about to be citizen) do not have any chance of living here now as the rules have all changed and have less chance than an iraqi floating in off a boat. Because Australia's weak policy makes it worth the risk. It's just too enticing. They get a free house, education, medical etc. I can't blame them for taking the risk but the government HAS to toughen up on boats coming here and they will find somewhere closer and safer.

Apparently these efforts to rescue the people in the water weren't good enough, now the refugees are protesting about it. That and they don't like the food they recieve or the fact that when Christmas Island loses its power supply that their air-conditioners don't work. Shit alot of Australians don't even enjoy the luxury of 3 square meals a day and air-conditioning, unbelievable. The children weren't even being helped with life jackets, most of the men took them. If they pass initial health and security screenings, give them temporary protection visas. Not only would this save tax payers a lot of money, it would allow these people to work. I'm sure the government could set up an employment stream, whereby these refugees could help certain industrys that are in need of labour. i.e agriculture/farming etc.
If they do not pass initial health and security screenings, send them home. Bear in mind that sending them home is usually a ticket to death.

@camoony The problem with that is, being compasionate encourages more boats across a dangerous journey with 1 in 2 boats most likely not to make it. Your idea would work if the government was prepared to fly or send over a cruise ship to pick everyone up. Then you can sleep at night knowing there is no risk of sinking. In the process you also increase the stakes for the people smugglers and so they pack more people on more boats for more profits.

As long as there are war torn countries there will be people trying to escape to safe places like Australia. If we close the door, they will open the window. They are honest, kind people and I'd be happy to see them as Australians. All they want to do is work and live freely. They do not want to be held in detention.
