OH NO!!! DOUBLE 13s!!! "Pay The Piper" peaked at No. 13 and spent a total of 13 weeks in the Top 100 chart in 1970/71, it entered the charts on November 14th, 1970!!!
(But then again; there are thousands and thousands of songs on You Tube that never charted at all)
Awesome song and great post. It seems to me like C.O.T.B. picked up where the Four Tops left off with H-D-H. I can see Levi Stubbs singing their songs. RIP to Levi and the General.
What a great song! I love the background singers of Chairmen Of The Board they are: Joyce Vincent, Telma Hopkins and Pamela Vincent! Those girls comprised of (Dawn) of Tony Orlando & Dawn. They did all of the Chairmen Of The Board music on the the Invictus Records they also did all of Freda Payne, Flaming Ember and many other groups. They are such beautiful women and wonderful singers. I did see Joyce is on the Former Ladies of The Supremes & Telma is on a show called: Are We There Yet? /
A sadly overlooked soul classic from the early 1970s. I've always liked this song - General Johnson had a very distinctive song and it's a shame he's gone now. Thanks for putting this song up MusicMike2.
Interesting lyric "....ask your mama...". I'm not so sure her mama is going to tell her to put out since the guy 'wined and dined" her. Still a great song.
I loved this song back in the day. I am not sure if it was 1971 or 1972 when I bought the 45 but I still have it. I liked the flip side of that song, forgot the name but it was good. I think this guy sang better than General Johnson but I have to say General had a recognizable voice. I loved what INVICTUS RECORDS was putting out during that time. They seemed unstoppable but as always good things come to an end.
I once saw a clip on the Internet of a dance show which aired on WWL-TV in New Orleans from 1961-72, "The John Pela Show". They showed a bunch of teen-agers dancing to this song in 1972. You should have seen the outfits...the skirts were so short. GROOVY.
Could just as easily have a WABC jingle in front of it, because "Pay To The Piper" may have had its biggest success in NYC (hit #7 on the WABC survey the first two weeks of 1971, was top-10 for weeks, which may have been its strongest chart performance anywhere)
People who listen to garbage like Miley Cyrus, Britney Spears, or the Jonas Brothers, need to give stuff like THIS a listen, then they'll know what REAL music is all about. This is real voices and real instruments unlike so much of what's out there today
