  • psh this guy sho nakata is playing pro baseball in japan but hes a batter now

  • best nolan clip on youtube, sweet

  • すげーwww

  • I think that is nolan ryan

  • im pretty sure this dude is a hitter not a pitcher

  • nope

  • isnt the guy on the right nolan ryan

  • No. It's groucho Marx. He decided he would forego his comedic career and pitch for the texas rangers instead without realizing the irony.

  • yep it's him

  • The expectation was a gap to Nakata.

    He is a batter now.

And, he is a follower of YU-DARVISH.

  • The left guy became a pro batter now

  • same delivery does not mean they pitch the same.

  • who si the man in the left the right guy is RYAN

  • title is WRONG...

It should be The Next Nolan Ryan...but Dice Gook Nip isn't even close to Ryan, the greatest pitcher of all-time

  • I don't get it. Why do you Japanese always have to play this annoying music in games?

  • He got drafted as a fielder tho...there was a rumor he might actually pitch a couple games once he went pro. Ichiro was another who pitched at high school

  • where did you get your facts?

  • In Japan - I was living there

  • thats fukin nolan ryan!

  • fuckin moron

  • drop dead faggot

  • oh yeah. a 15 game winner, and 2 game loser is such a nip.

and, the season's not even over yet.

  • the fact that he pitches no more then 6 innings, his wins does not actually reflect how great that record looks, he needs to thank Boston for scoring all the runs, and thank his bullpen for getting him the win, otherwise, he could be like Santana. Baseball is a team sport.

  • i guess you're right about the thing about 6 innings. but his ERA is only 2.8 (55 runs in 28 outtings, 168 IP) so, it's probable that he's getting a few wins even when his team's only scoring a few runs a game.

  • Again, this is not Little League, the game is 9 innings, not 6. I am sure he would do just as good if he was Met, but the fact with the Mets Bullpen and the line up with it's issues, I doubt his record would be as impressive. Santana has a 15-7 record with a 2.64 ERA to date, and of the 7 loses, the bullpen lost at least 5 for him. My point is, He is a good pitcher, but his record has a lot to do with his bullpen to not to lose it or to score lots of runs

  • agreed.

  • Yes, the Mets bullpen had problems this year. Thats hard to take cuz the Mets relievers are traditionally very good. Hopefully Omar can amend the problem. What to do with Heilmann?

  • not to mention he was injured for a part of the season.

  • STFU, you moron..this nip has to play another 20 plus seasons to be in the league of Nolan Ryan.

  • you realize dice-k is only in his 2nd MLB year. im sure Nolan Ryan did not explode right off the bat at the start of his career.

dont even mention dice-k's japanese pitching time because japanese baseball is different. they dont play nearly as many games as the MLB. starters would probably pitch once a week there whereas ours would sometimes go 3 outtings in 2 weeks.

  • how old is Dice Gook? 30 plus years...

reminds me of a right handed Fernando Valuenzuela, another washed up hype pitcher

  • dice gook? wtf.

i repeat, japanese leagues arent the same as they are here. he's technically a rookie. just like Kosuke Fukudome of the Cubs.

why dont you go find a video of fernando and bitch about him on there. not about this guy who's been one of the most consistent pitchers in the League.

  • nolan ryan is a completely different type pitcher. he was a power pitcher and was all of his career he relied on his upper 90's low 100's fastball where as dice k is much smaller, has less of a frame and relies more on his braking pitches and upper 80's low 90's fastball, ryan is way different

  • i cant tell if you're saying that against me, or for me. it can be interpreted either way.

  • you are comepletey right about Ryan.

BUT, dice-k has a more consistant low to mid 90's fastball rather than an upper eighties

    I once saw dice-k toss a 97 mph fastball.

So dont count on him to be more of a finesse guy....even though he is

  • thats nolan ryan! the hell!

  • not exactly the same stance, see how ryan practically covers up his face for a little while with his left knee when throwing, whereas the Jap never puts his eyes away from the batter. Another striking difference is Ryan's muscular structure. Take a look at Ryan's rear and upper legs. Monumental

  • Ya, Matsuzaka is in high school on that clip and looks like Nolan is in ML so big difference in Muscular part.

  • the one thing that is a major difference is that ryan is much bigger and stronger than dic k meaning hell be more powerful

  • thats not dice k

  • What did Nakata do to you to insult him? Calling him the next Dice-k is really mean. Why not just call him the next irabu

  • im sure you could find other pitchers who have similar windups, but no one can compete with ryan

  • I completely and totaly agree with you dude...NOLAN RYAN OWNS ALL!!!!

  • Nakata is Batter>>>Pitcher.

  • No ine can or ever will match up to Nolan Ryan...EVER!!!

  • yes. people can match up to him. nolan ryan may be the leader for the most strikeouts, but is also the leader on base on balls. he threw fast as balls. in the high 90's and over 100 mph. it was easy for him to dominate. but pitchers like dice-k don't have that arm strengh and have to rely on breaking balls and off speed and different locations of the strike zone. it's harder for him to dominate. but he does it. which is why i think he matches nolan ryan

  • matches nolan ryan? no way nolan ryan is the greatest pitcher to ever live. 7 no hitters over 300 wins(would have been more if he was on better teams) and 27 years in the major leagues. theres a difference between getting batters out and flat out dominating them. dice k works from both parts of the plate and relies on batters getting themselves out(fly outs, ground outs) nolan ryan also had 12 1 hitters. he was dominate and mentally destroyed a teams hitters, they simply couldn't hit him.

  • we both have our opinions. i know that nolan ryan was one of the greatest. but i'm saying that nolan dominated cause he threw the ball like 105 mph. it was easier for him. which is why i stated i THINK (notice the think. this is clearly my opinion) that daisuke matches ryan because he dominates when he doesn't have the beastly arm that nolan ryan had. the fastest that dice-k ever threw was 153 kph which is like 97 mph. and that was in japans pacific league

  • Nolan Ryan is one of the most overrated pitchers in the history of baseball. The fact that you think there is even a chance that he's the greatest of all-time shows that you really don't look too far beyond statistics like K's and no-hitters.

  • are you retarded??? how is he overrated he has 300 wins. a career 3.19 ERA He has been selected to 8 all star teams. three teams have retired his number He has struck out 19 batters in one game. there are much more you can say about him.

  • Career 111 ERA+. That's just a tad bit above average.

324 career wins in 27 seasons is terrible, as is the 292 losses.

The strikeouts can be attributed to longevity, and you didn't mention the walks, wild pitches, etc.

All-Star games are popularity contests, nothing more.

No, I'm not retarded. YOU very well could be though.

  • He a 16 loss season with a 2.87 ERA and another 16 loss season with a 2.89 ERA he obviously didn't get alot of run support. so he should have more wins.

Pitchers can pitch as long as they want if your 45 and can pitch 95 great still pitch. He went 24 years without having a ERA over 4

Screw the walks and wild pitches he got the job done.

He belongs in the all star game he put up the stats.

  • But wait there is more

It is crazy to have 5,000 strikeouts. Really good pitchers only have 3,000 strike outs.

It is outstanding to have 2 no-hitters but 7 that is unreal

bottom line ERA is the Most important stat for a pitcher

  • "bottom line ERA is the Most important stat for a pitcher"

    Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!

That's a good one. Yeah, WHIP and ERA+ aren't important at all.

Strikeouts don't make you great. Greg Maddux was a far better pitcher than Ryan, and he has just over 3,100.

No-hitters are meaningless when talking about greatness. You know who else has thrown a no-hitter? Terry Mulholland!

Carlton, Maddux, W. Johnson, they succeeded on terrible teams.

  • Thank you for proving my point to be in the hall of fame they don't look at your WHIP or ERA+ why no one cares

1 no-hitter won't get you in the hall of fame, But he HAD 7 NO-HITTERS do you realize how crazy that is.

It is funny your bring up Walter Johnson you can't bring him up as one of the best pitchers in the game.

Maddux being better than Ryan that is debatable. Maddux is a good pitcher

  • I said that Johnson succeeded on terrible teams. I'm sick and tired of the "bad teams" argument. If a pitcher is good enough, he wins.

I could care less what the HOF looks at. They inducted Jim Rice, so that should tell you that they don't know anything. WHIP and ERA+ are easily the two best pitching statistics there are. I know, I know, SABR stats are different and scary from the ancient stats like wins, ERA, and K's! Go read Moneyball.

    No-hitters are MEANINGLESS.

  • Jim Rice should be in the HOF rather than Ricky.

And i know no hitters don't get you anywhere in your career but again 7 no- hitters are not easy nolan ryan made it seem easy.

No hitters are not meaningless it is still something pitchers shoot for.

  • So, you are actually saying that Jim Rice deserves the Hall of Fame more than Rickey Henderson does? If you really think that, you obviously know absolutely nothing about baseball, and arguing with you is as meaningless as no-hitters (which you apparently adore).

  • i know more than baseball than you. Ricky Henderson only stole bases. You have no idea how hard it is to pitch a no-hitter i just don't adore it many people adore it. you are resisting to accept the fact that it is an accomplishment

  • "i know more than baseball than you."

    That says it all.

Rickey stole more than 50% more bases then Lou Brock. He also stole them at a great 81% success rate. He also hit the most leadoff home runs, is second all-time in walks, has an incredible .401 OBP for a leadoff hitter, a 127 OPS+, and 3,000 hits.

So, no, Rickey did not "only stole bases".

And at least spell his name right if you are going to say ignorant things about him.

    You fail...so hard...

  • I do fail hard arguing with a stubborn two year old brat. Jim Rice a 298 career hitter Ricky a career 279.

Rickey Henderson played 24 seasons and barley had 3,000 hits Jim Rice 2,000 hits 15 years

I don't care if i misspelled Rickey's name wrong if he was better I would remember how to spell it.

You know this arguing on who is better is getting old and childish we all have opinions no matter what we think of them we have to respect them.

  • "a stubborn two year old brat"

Hmm, I'm the two-year-old? You still think batting average is a legitimate statistic. And you failed to address even a single one of the my points, and instead tell me about batting averages, which mean jack shit, as I have proved countless times before.

You keep talking about how great Jim Rice is, yet it's pretty sad that "Ricky" Henderson has an OBP almost fifty points higher. Of course, you probably won't address this.

  • Tell me how Batting Average is not a legitimate statistic.

Your spitting on Ty Cobb right now by saying that.

The first thing people look at is wait for it BATTING AVERAGE.

When you are a lead off hitter you should have a higher OBP than the fourth, third hitter, etc. Why Third fourth fifth are power guys lead off hitters job is to run the count and get on base.

Oh yeah I did address your points you failed to acknowledge them

  • Batting average is not the only thing that made Ty Cobb great. His OBP, SLG, OPS, OPS+, total bases, high walk numbers, stolen bases, and his immense power in the dead-ball era are what made him great, not batting average.

I failed to acknowledge them? I brought up seven things, one of which you have directly addressed. That was his OBP, and your reasoning makes no sense.

I'll ask again. Who was the better hitter in 2004? Adam Dunn, who hit .266 or Shea Hillebrand who hit .310?

  • Do you watch baseball?? Oh yeah please tell me how OBP is better than Average

There a two ways to look at it who is better

    Average: Hillenbrand

    HR: Dunn

    RBI: Dunn

    OBP: Dunn

Dunn was the better hitter. His OBP had nothing to do with it because him being at plate you fear his power so you walk him.

  • No...he was walked because he a better eye, which makes him the better hitter.

Batting average measures how many hits you can get. On-base percentage shows how good a player is at getting on base. A player can get 150 hits and hit .360, while another player gets 250 hits and hits .340. Why? Because batting average doesn't count walks, HBPs, etc. and it takes away at-bats.

That's why batting average is flawed. I'm sorry you can't get that through your head. It's unfortunate.

  • So what you are saying if you are hitting 300 and your OBP is 315 that player isn't good right because that is what your are saying.

Oh yeah learn how to spell Hillenbrand

  • Oh, hey, nice! You recognized a spelling mistake three posts after it came up...yeah, nice one.

No, that player isn't good. He is maybe average, and that is being kind. If you are getting on base 32% of the time, that is really awful. I don't get how you could possibly think that someone with a .315 OBP is a good hitter...it baffles me...

    I would rather have a player that hits .240 with a .410 OBP than a player who hits .300 with a .315 OBP. That's a ridiculous question...

  • A five tool player has a good arm, speed, good glove, average, power huh no OBP to be mentioned anywhere.

There is a reason why you are not a manager of a team.

  • It's impossible talking to someone who knows as little of baseball as you do. I'm sorry you cannot get it through your extremely thick skull (in addition to your miniscule brain) that batting average is an awful indication of how good a hitter is.

Right...give me a five-tool player...now what would their on-base percentages be? Fairly high, I'm sure.

Once again, you dodge every single point I make and move on to talking about irrelevant and ignorant subjects that make no sense. Nice job!

  • Comment removed

  • (Okay lets try this again)

Your predictable you tell me how i make no sense how stupid I am.

I am not arguing anything about how high your OBP is I'm arguing that average is just as or more important OBP.

I can't take you seriously when you say average is a awful statistic for a hitter when you can't hit 300 in the majors

  • It's actually "you're". I wouldn't have to tell you about it if you stopped acting that way.

Batting average is an awful, awful, awful and extremely misleading statstic when you have stats like OBP, SLG, OPS, and OPS+ to go along with it.

"when you can't hit 300 in the majors"

If this is yet another of your dull personal insults against me, then you have no right saying that I'm predictable. Once AGAIN, you ignore every point I make and continue talking about irrelevant things.

  • Thank you for realizing my mistake really I mean it.

OBP is something that can be fixed by taking more pitches. To get a good slugging percentage you need at least an average or power.

While not having OBP is a drawback on a player having a good average is a plus.

Here is a question (know your are going to say it is stupid and dull and I'm dodging your points but answer it it's your opinion) late in a game would you feel comfortable with a guy with a good OBP or average against Tim lincecum

  • Oh, it's no problem. I'm happy to help!

"OBP is something that can be fixed by taking more pitches"

That makes no sense. Every single player is supposed to take more pitches, and having a high OBP shows that you have a good eye.

You obviously don't know what SLG is. If you get a lot of extra-base hits, not just home runs, you can have a high SLG.

If he had a high OBP, I would feel as comfortable as possible. Lincecum struggles with control at times, and he can draw a walk.

  • thanks always glad to have a helping hand.

Pablo Sandoval swung at a lot of curve balls down in the dirt so he didn't get walked a lot. Then he learned to take the pitches and in June and walked 13 times. In may and April he walked a combined 8 times.

That was a stupid comment about SLG I meant to say something else but it came out wrong.

I don't know if you watch Lincecum a lot but he has good command unless it is one of those rare starts where he is bad or he faces the brewers

  • Lincecum averaged over three walks last season, and walked 84 batters.

Pablo Sandoval has a good season OBP of .377. He's having a great season, perhaps an amazing season.

  • Okay I will agree he does walk batters during a game but makes up for it with his strikeouts.

Pablo Sandoval has been doing better than I think anyone ever expected he is only 22 years old!!!

  • I agree, his 10.5 K's/9 more than made up for his 3.3 BB/9, as did his 7.2 H/9.

Sandoval is underrated, was passed over for the All-Star game (again, it's nothing more than a popularity contest).

He has a .373 OBP, a .556 SLG, a .929 OPS (which is really great), and has a 141 OPS+ (again, really great). He's below average defensively, but he has really had a great offensive season.

  • Sandoval is underrated and plays on a underrated team. (far underrated team).

The phillies fans are pathetic Rollins finished second in shortstop voting.

Charlie Manuel was the manager and I think there was 7 phillies were at the all star game.

  • I wouldn't go as far as to say that the Giants are underrated. Their pitching rotation is vastly overrated, and their offense is one of the worst. However, they do have the best one-two punch rotation in baseball with Lincecum and Cain.

  • By underrated I mean no one took the Giants serious before the year started. Rowand got hot Johnson helped and Lincecum, Cain doing fantastic. Those three reasons why the Giants are in the hunt.

Once you get past Lincecum Cain, Sanchez will give a good start every now and then. Zito will give a two good starts (maybe) then he would get pounded. Sadowski hasn't been like he was when he faced the Brewers.

  • Sanchez has had one great start this season (the no-hitter) and the rest have been average or terrible.

Barry Zito is...well...impossible to describe. Years ago, he was the most dominant left-hander in the American League. Now, you are lucky to get three or four quality starts out of him per season. I feel bad for him, I really do, because he was so easy to like when he was in Oakland. As was Mark Mulder and Tim Hudson (my personal favorite) and now they all have injury problems.

  • Sanchez as a four starter he is good. I think he would be far better closer or set-up man but Sanchez still has potential.

It is terrible to watch people (Mark Prior, Tim Hudson, Mark Mulder.) have great years then have a arm issue and not being able to pitch.

Zito had a few good starts for the giants this year even at June 5 he had a 3.86 ERA. but he has walked batters. It seems like its just one inning and he loses it.

  • Mark Prior is the saddest case out of all of them. The guy was one of the most dominant pitchers in the National League in 2003, but was severely overused. Now, his career is basically over...after five seasons.

  • I doubt it though but i think he will start again. However now that the padres released him the next time (or if he does) its probably going to be in japan.

I doubt anyone is going to take him but he is still young.

  • KUNG FOO PANDA!

  • lol

  • -_- dont compare a japanese high school player to nolan ryan

  • @elrifle24

He's comparing in the definition of they have similar mechanics or deliveries there was no mention of who was better skills wise or statistically speaking.

  • shut up!!!

he never pitched on American ground before...he is just unbelievable...and not horrible!!!

    and his name is matsuzaka...

  • go fuck yourself- you idiot.

You don't know anything about Nolan Ryan and baseball.

  • Don't ever compare him or anyone to Nolan Ryan..

It is an INSULT. Nolan Ryan pitched 27 seasons with 5,714 strikeouts, 3.19 ERA, 7 no-hitters...and many records.

This Matsuka player had a 15-12 record and a 4.40 ERA in his first season !!! That is horrible.

  • His FIRST season? Then he certianly must suck.

  • wait wat?

ill change my windup if that makes me as good as nolan ryan?

why the hell would that matter?

  • la makana ke nolan ryan solo habra uno

  • i dont see how you can make the comparsion of nolan ryan and this guy and then say that he is the next dice-k. are you saying that he's the next best pitcher from japan or what?

  • I don't see the similarity. Ryan's mechanics are absolutely unparalleled as he generated maximum force that swung his right leg all the way around. This Japanese guy drops and drives, but isn't nearly as efficient.

  • lmao yea ok. u think cuz he looks like nolan ryan, that hes gonna get over 5000 strikeouts?

  • Hold on. Are you telling me that just because he "looks" like Nolan Ryan and that he "winds up" like Dice K that he's the next pitching star?

    Wow. Flawless logic.

  • dice-k wont put any one in the head lock and give him a beating in the head

  • nakata sho is more well known as a slugger than a pitcher. besides, its just a high leg lift. the way power is generated is different and his left foot is not facing the right side of home base like nolan ryan

  • fuck you

  • I totally agree even though you used a racial slur.

    Nolan Ryan is the GOAT.

  • No he's not. Far from it.

  • again faggot...drop dead.

  • You are like a robot. A very annoying robot.

  • you're a dumb yankee ashole aren't ya?

  • Jesus, he tears those hitters up. But that's not a very convincing video. Only time will tell..

  • Ted lilly, he sucks balls all day long!!!! Its all about Kelvim Escobar!!!!

  • The evaluation of the batter is higher than the pitcher.

He shot 87 home runs of the new high school baseball record.

  • he never went to college. this is the video when he was in high school. i think this is his freshman year.

  • thats dice k matsuzaka on the left when he is on his college team!

  • the guy on the left actually has a similar leg kick to pedro martinez, except that this kid's arm slot is higher

  • i thought that he was more of a back up pitcher

  • Kid looks good with the same mechanics as Ryan. It would certainly be way premature to compare him (skill-wise) to someone like Ryan, but I think the Dice-K comparrison is apt. Now to work on that "gyroball" ;)

  • Many project him as not as a pitcher but as a right fielder for what its worth. And he is on the MLB radar.

  • He has the same mechanics as Ryan.

  • Wow, they're pretty similar. Nolan's leg does go slightly higher, he turns his head down a bit when his leg is up, and he lets his right leg swing out a little bit more after he throws the ball, but I doubt that makes much of a difference.

We'll see what happens. I think Sho Nataka will be really good someday.

  • you no what were going to other countries to find baseball players, but i bet there are baseball players undiscovered here in the us!!! you no what with all these stupid reality tv shows on now there should be one where an open tryout for people ages 20 to 50 and the top 25 go into a draft to play major league baseball i think it would a better show than american idol!! who knows there will probobly be someone just like that movie "THE ROOKIE" with dennis quaid

  • "yeah it's weird, they both lift their leg and then throw with their arm!!!" haha seriously, D-Train can be the next Nolan Ryan!!

  • Mechanics look good. Good balance with such a high leg kick.

  • yeah it's weird, they both lift their leg and then throw with their arm!!!

  • This guy could be better than Matsuzaka. He is a junior in high school but has hit 62 homers in two years and throws over 95 MPH. Scouts from ten teams, including the Minnesota Twins, were at his first practice of the year on Jan 4th. By the end of the year, he could be the most sought after high school pitcher & hitter in the history of Japan. We might even see him don a Rangers uni, like Ryan, someday.

SHO NAKATA....you saw him here first!

  • the red sox must have seen this video to pay as much as hey did to get him.

  • What the hell do you mean by "next Daisike Matsuzaka"? He probably got his pitching from Nolan Ryan!
