And I am from Somalia not far from where these people live. If these people really cared about lions they would start with their local zoo first. The Maasai I've talked to say they never actually receive these payments. They do like the idea and agree that they shouldn't kill lions anymore, but most just have to absorb the loss, akin to losing a month's worth of rent.

I think the greater purpose here is not so much the preservation of lions but the killing of the massai warrior instinct and their culture of bravery...

if lions are left to kill livestock with no consequences they will start to associate humans with food the killing of lions should be controlled not stopped or work out a way to stop the lions killing livestock. this is not a solution its the start of a new problem. if the maasai have existed so long with lions why they coming extinct now.

The initiative is probably good, but it falsely suggests that it achieved a culture change in the relationship between the maasai and lions. Maasai have always respected lions and left them alone unless threatening their own survival. The word "enemy" in maasai culture as a term of the greatest respect of the strength of the other. Please note also that maasai children are killed regularly by lions. Kenya Wildlife Services compensated 200$ for a child taken by a lion (this was in 1998).

I wonder if the San Diego zoo would pay $200 compensation if one of their visitors was killed by a lion.
