My only question is: Why if contrails are "natural", do they occur in perfect grid patterns over cities? Planes don't fly perfectly parallel to each other, there would be at least ONE contrail out of place but no... NEVER. always in a grid pattern.
If I may add to this.....Since the Appleman chart was developed in 1953, it was relative to the jet engines of the time. In the '50s, jet engines were still in their infancy, with only "Turbojets" being used as the prominent style. In later decades, the Turbojet was replaced by the "Turbofan," Which subsequently was divided into Low-bypass, and High-bypass turbofans. HIgh-bypass turbofans push about 9lbs of air around teh engine core, for every 1lb pushed through the core ---->
This results in exaust with a much higher concentration of water vapor, while operating at much higher fuel efficency than the old turbojets. Which were completely non-bypass. Giving you contrails that persist longer, and that can form at warmer temperatures, than established by Appleman in 1953.
Ronin, I think the efficiency increase is due in part both to an increase in compression ratio of the core and also the increased thrust of the fanned air obtained by the expansion due to improved heat exchange from the core
The higher CR will burn more of the remaining unburnt fuel and add somewhat more oxides of nitrogen
The exhaust will be marginally wetter
It's the IMMENSE SIZE of these engines which is responsible for such massive trails

Ten years after that I was working on the air cooling of forged Nimonic turbine blades, so the benefit of that research has been reaped now
My point being that entraining 9 times more air doesn't intrinsically increase the amount of water vapor generated
These engines cause bigger trails simply because they are BIGGER engines
In the case where the ambient conditions are beneath but close to saturation then these larger engines will push the ambient over saturation more than smaller ones will
