I remember watching the Monkees show with my older sister. I was five. I believe she had a crush on Davy. I also remember he appeared on the Brady Brunch as himself. He was so cute. Rest in peace.
Yeah, they were one of the very first precursors to the boy bands, Britney Spears/J'Lo, and other "manufactured celebrities." Watching a lot of their old videos, you can often see they're not really playing the guitars (which usually weren't even plugged in), and Mickey's drumsticks are barely moving. Sometimes they're "singing" without mikes, even. Later they started some of their own stuff, but it quickly faded. That being said, they represented a nicer, more innocent era, missed by many.
@Osmigo1 Technically speaking they were also a "manufactured celebrity" Band. They were all chosen for their looks (and some musical ability) for a TV show. That being said it was a much better time when things wern't "whored out" like todays "celebrities"
Don't get me wrong, I loved the Monkees, they were my first favorite band and I've seen every show they've made.
When I was a kid, I would spend whatever weekdays I had off watching old tv shows on the box. One of my favorites was The Monkees. Thank you Davy for making my childhood a little happier. RIP.
you know whats the best about Davey Jones, may he R.I.P., the Monkees was about each one of them as an individual, that is what made them the best. Thanks for being apart of a piece of my life. Hope the new generation learns from Davey, and Mickey, Mike and Peter.
Man a piece of me is gone today, RIP Davey you are sorely missed! This is a very very SAD Day! I am so glad I got to meet you in person and talk to you. Not many celebrities like Davey he was down to earth REAL! Sing with the Angels Davey and have them singing the last train to Heaven.
I know they're all around the same age, but somehow it just seems wrong to think of Davy going first. He's always going to be that cute kid, you know?
First MJ Now Davy, Why couldn't they have taken Justin Beaber?!??!?!?! WHY GOD WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY! oh wait...but cause your not real....
RIP Davy....I listened to you in my childhood and you will forever be a legend. God just wanted some really good music up there in heaven. keep playin it up there, old friend.
Sadden Davy Jones passed away, now the music as well the entertainment world has lost another iconic performer that has enriched our lives. He was the face of a free-loving generation, a time we took on life with great zest and appeal...
Davy Jones has taken the last train to Clarksville... for one last time... bless you and good bye Davy, we will miss you.
R.I.P TRIBUTE TO DAVY JONES: Another talented guy gone to that heaven in the sky, perhaps getting ready to entertain them 'up there'. Actor, musician, Jockey etc. I DON'T THINK HE IS RESTING IN PEACE 'UP THERE' -HE'S DANCING AND SINGING.
@DatingGameKiller I saw the Monkees live some years back without Mike who is a talented guitar player. What impressed me was how Peter played the keyboard part to
"The Girl that I Knew Somewhere" exact to the record and Mickey's voice was so powerful that it hurt my head in that arena. On another note I have to say this. When we took a break and went outside I saw the more lovely ladies on that parking lot (thousands) than any other time in my life!
People called them the pre-fab 4, but the Monkees did have real talent and wrote some of their own material. And they did struggle to get recognition and to be taken seriously.
I remember the battle of the bands on Radio KOMA out of Oklahoma City. The Beatles and the Monkees in the final.....And the winner....THE MONKEES!!!! such memories
@DatingGameKiller I know you're a fellow fan, otherwise you wouldn't post here! I commented to direct the thread to sources of facts. The story of The Monkees is a fascinating one. As a kid, I just loved them - no questions asked. Being brought up in Liverpool everyone told me The Monkees were just a Beatles rip-off and I shouldn't like them. What's wrong with liking music and a fun programme, I asked? My favourite song? - Pleasant Valley Sunday - great riff & vocals!
@Multiacman ...Thank you Multiacman. The TV show was a bit corny, story/plotwise. But I always loved the song scenes. To me, The Monkees represented a lighter side of the pop/rock scene from their time. Their music was fun and catchy...Pleasant Valley Sunday is indeed a great tune.
@John1948NineC ...My comment was actually a quote from a TV documentary interview from Mickey Dolenz. Not at all "hard to understand". They might have had musical talent before being cast for the show, but they were not an actual band.
@DatingGameKiller ...I guess I should rephrase: Musicians turned TV actors, becoming an actual band...much like Starsky & Hutch becoming real cops. More better now?
@DatingGameKiller - check out Wikipedia. Both Tork and Nesmith were - and are - accomplished musicians. People assume they couldn't play because the TV bosses wouldn't let them!
@Multiacman .. Yes I know. see my other replies...it was intended to be a tongue-in-cheek kind of comment, but has turned out to be a foot-in-mouth kind instead. Thanks, though.
@DatingGameKiller They were musicians first. Mickey did have to learn the drums, he was a guitarist before. Davy could play some drums but he was too short to see him back there. Which is probably why he stands if he does any drumming like on Randy Scouse Git. I know I've said to much sry.
@FvckIran ..thanks. I wasn't being degrading to the Monkees. I actually watched the show a lot when I was a kid, and I still like some of their music. See my reply to John1948nineC.
The movie HEAD, is actually a good film with high ratings by today's reviewers. It bombed at the time due to a very weak promotion. It's unusual, but it is entertaining and interesting.
wow! i haven't seen this clip since it was on saturday mornings back in the late 60's. puff n stuff, banana splits and all the great cartoons back then! thanks for reigniting wonderful memories of my childhood
@bringbackreagan1 yeah I remember the Banana splits and Jack Wild (Puff & Stuff)cause my sister always watch them. I remember having my Star Trek model on top of the refrigerator so I could look at it whenever I walked by. Those were the last of the good-o'l-days and they are not coming back! The Beatles once hosted a party for the Monkees.
The party occurred during the recording of the Sgt. Pepper's album.
Mike Nesmith attended the "A Day in the Life" sessions at
Abbey Road Studios; he is seen in The Beatles' home movies,
including one scene where he is talking with John Lennon.
Lennon said: "I think you're the greatest comic talent since the Marx Brothers.
I've never missed one of your programs." George Harrison said:
"It's obvious what's happening, there's talent there."
