You have to look at it from several points of view to understand it. The gathering of people always benefits somebody or something, whether it be entreprenuers trying to sell them stuff or organizations trying to recruit activist for some other cause. You can't get caught up in the fact that the media calls it a "protest". The attendees would probably call it a "demonstration".

It's to help keep the sheep from thinking they would be right to stand up for themselves. If everybody that stands up for themselves gets a negative label then the weaker people will choose not to stand in order to keep themselves from being labeled.

Some peoople go to protests to socialize with other socially/politically-minded people, whether or not they are actually in favor of the current issue being protested. A protest can be fun sometimes as long as people don't get crazy. I will bet you that most of those people don't have any issue in mind for being out there. They are just doing the human thing and engaging in societal behavior. Keeping up with the current political waves.

you don't go take a free day and protest just to meet up with friends... you can do that aswell in the weekends
