I mean WHY!! wouldn't a label want you to EXPAND your horizons? Even fans understand the artist want to grow/expand be successful. Bottom line she did not like her label exec who wanted to control/dictate the growth her success. So because she wasn't a push over I guess he viewed her as a problem. She's still one of the greatest singers of all time.
I was so mad that she didn't become succesful like should have. People in the music industry wants to change your style or image, but Phyllis was already content with herself.
Seems to me that Phyllis Hyman; in fact, WAS Clive's Whitney before Whitney came along. He had his vision of what he thought a crossover megastar was supposed to be. Once he had that after signing Whitney, she was no longer needed. But I side with Phyllis on this one: could you see Phyllis Hyman; 6 ft. tall, oozing sexuality, singing some bubble-gum "How will I know" bullshit? I can't.
@daTruChosen Also Phyllis was her own woman and one's puppet. I have to respect her for that.. Stand up for your own and do not be a pushover or tolerate some bullshit..
If Phyllis were alive today, she would make a great Motormouth Maybelle on the musical play Hairspray. She got the voice, the energy and the stage presence.
It seems that she was comfortable doing her style of music, and did not want to be be placed in a box by Clive Davis. Perhaps it cost her possible mainstreanm success, but she wanted to remain true t who she was.
She was one in a million and bring one of her kind there's no doubt in my mind that a beautiful person through & through. She didn't even get a chance to do just that... I love you, may her soul rest I'm peace. Battling with mental health illness is surly not easy but I must say she did well to get so far. S.E
I have been a fan for more than half of my life, I Love her!

Phyllis Hyman was a beautiful and talented singer. I was very sorry to hear that she suffered & struggled with mental illness (depression)
