It's so ironic how the WM Peugeot broke the speed record on the Mulsanne straight at 251mph and there you see it just going for a morning drive @2:35, but I'm sure it had mechanical failures at that point in the race.
After watching this video for only 10 seconds, I can safely say that diesel sucks. Fuck diesel, bring back Group C. No one wants to see an Audi + Peugeot dirty diesel circlejerk, we want THIS.
Without any doubts, 1980's were the finest years in Le Mans 24 hours history, very huge grid, multi manufacturers racing , beautiful looking & sounding closed-top machines!!
The last time the old Mulsanne straight was used before it was chicaned up...what a waste:( Got to love the sounds of these Group C cars though, especially that Aston Martin V8, todays LMP open-tops are not in the same league.
I'm pretty sure by all reckoning though not quite the 11 or 1200 horsepower monsters that these cars were in qualifying trim, the combination of today's aerodynamics, tires, and 700+hp, and 1000+NM Peugeots (and presumably Audi R15s) are quicker around a lap of La Sarthe. But the non-chicaned Hunaudieres and the insane top speeds (along with fantastic exhaust notes) make these cars incredible. It was quite an era, and is fun to look back on with reverence for its extreme nature.
Yes they were awsome cars to watch, if I remember correctly the car actualy recorded that speed during the 1988 race, but I only got my first video camera in 1989.
I could be wrong but I think the WM recorded the fastest speed during practice in 1987. Fabulous footage, though - wish I'd been able to see these cars at the height of their powers!
Highest Trap Speed - Jaguar XJR-9 - 389 km/h (race), Sauber Mercedes C9 - 401 km/h (qualifying)
The only time I've been for the 24 hours, you must of been standing next to me around 1pm on Sunday. Many thanks for these memories.
