  • Gooord!! wish I still had my GTR Torana..I literally dream about her all the time...nice vid...

  • Thanks for the comments, and I know how you feel, having had my car stolen years ago it was a great pleasure to have it back again. I have just completed rebuilding the engine, Dyno tested at 185KW at 7200rpm, and running in excess of 8200rpm without an issue. New HD video's will be posted in the coming months. Thanks for your interest. WayneXU1.

  • @WayneXu1 Outstanding,, looking forward to them...by the way, I went back to an FJ Holden...ha

  • gday mate do you have any cam specs?

  • @DavosuperM - Hi Cam was a 44/80 full race in the old terms.

  • GTR XU - 1. Schoolboys know it was the best of the best. You want to prove otherwise?

This was a production car. Bring on the others.

  • very nice :)

  • nice car, nice video.I enjoyed watching it.What is the latest,do you still have the car?

  • @hiptoeknee , Thanks for the comments, really appreciated. Yes I still own the car, and just about to finish the restoration of an LX SS Hatch, which I'll feature in another vieo this year. The XU1 was just photo for Motor Trend Classic car magazine in the USA, and I cant wait to see the photos. I drove the car just two weeks ago, and its really going well. Thankyou for watching. regards, WayneXU1

  • my Cusions LJ i much angrier than this runs on avgas only, tough car any way:)

  • kinda sounds like a v8 at idle

  • Thanks Tin701, the sound of the carbs at idle is hissing, but when you open them up, it's a real rush. You've got to be careful that the carbs don't lean out at all, as the carbs can back-fire like a bomb going off. Thanks for the comment. Wayne.

  • My old man had one just like this, used to always talk of the triple carbys giving a great idle sound

  • Bloody thing is going 180kmph standing still.!!!! Have always loved the look of the LC's and LJ's and yours is one of the best I've seen to date. Hats off to ya.

  • Thanks for the comment, yeah I have to agree, The Torana's look great in my books too. There 's a direct link in the Torana to the American 68 Camaro, even the duck tail spoiler at the rear and the rear tail lights, about half the size and weight of the Camaro too. Thanks. from Wayne.

  • sounds like the start of hot for teacher by van halen on idle

  • Thanks Antwarz, well I guess the car does rock n roll quite a bit, especially from cold. But when its warmer it is quite drivable, especially cruising at above 80Km/hr. Thanks your comment. Wayne.

  • sounds orgasmic. i cant wait til i can afford one myself. i might never get a real GTR but i bet i will be able to get a 'lookalike'. i would prefer a lookalike because of what i would do with it, i dont like messing with originals.

  • Thanks 175myles and all that have commented on the sound of the car. The cam is 40/85 starfire conrods and solid steel crank with roller rockers. The Engine can Rev freely to well over 7200rpm and the 2 inch exhaust with XU1 mufler tells the tale. I look after this car and even preheat the engine before starting in Winter. It is a beautiful little car to drive, although cruising above 80Km's per hour is when it comes into its own. Best Regards. Wayne.

  • bloody awesome sound mate, congrats

  • Nothing beats a nice straight six fizz, snap, crackle, pop exhaust!

  • Giday Wayne,

A great Car,I miss my Monaro GTS Coupe. Then a post Bathurst 73 LJ GTR made from left overs for the LJ Race cars. As the LHV8 release in 74. It was only a standard GTR,The giveaway was a XU1 head +some suspension bits.I tweeked it with exhaust mods, Yella Terra Head (not knowing what was already on the car),&a Whopping 4 Barrel Carby. Interest rates went up & you know the rest.I would love to have one again I enjoy your video. Look after it mate. Its' a legend like you.

    cheers.Don

  • HI Don, Thanks for your comments. Yeah, the 70's really was a time to fondly look back on for cars in Australia. Sounds like you had a real gem of a 73 GTR there, but as you say, we all had other commitments, and who would have thought back then that our cars would be so popular again now. As you know, they are so different to todays cars, but every bit as powerful, the Torana's handle and brake ok too. I guess that's the charm of them. Happy memories mate. Regards. Wayne.

  • love ya car wayne dont ever sell it!!!

  • Thanks for the kind comments, I've got too much emotional attachment with the car to sell it. I still can't help staring at it in the garage sometimes, the old LC/LJ shape seems to be timeless, always looks modern I guess, with a bit of Chrome. Different colours make them look longer or shorter in teh back end, its interesting to compare the body building with newer cars, completely different. Thanks again. Wayne.

  • I would love to put a RB25DET in 72 LJ. I have the RB25, just need a good 2 door LJ.

  • Hi Dave,

The LJ /LC Torana coupe body's are desirable and low weight, with some mods can be rigid platform for serious horsepower. You've got to love the LJ drag cars with the big V8's. Sorry mate, you can't have this one!

Too much sentimental attachment to the old six and memories of the past.

    Best Regards. Wayne.

  • The car looks fantastic. I had a Zodiac blue car in Campbelltown Sydney in the 80s.Was originally Glacier white.Very much like your car. How long have you owned the car and do you know any of the history of the car? I ran a JL block with a blue crank and triple 45 dellortos and 40/80 cam.Wheels were torana chrome 6+7s and ran a 3.90 gear set in the LSD and V8 M21 with front shaft shortened. Engine bay was body colour, and had centre roof aerial, same as yours. Sold the car in 1986 or thereabouts.

  • Thanks debkar4817, I appreciate the email you have sent and the close comparison of the cars, your's to, was an outstanding machine, I hope you have many happy memories.

    Many Thanks.

    Wayne.

  • We need more videos. Awesome Torana buddy

  • Thanks Jarad, This video has been on Youtube for about a year, and I really do want to make another soon. I would like to go cruising with some other Torana enthusiasts in Western Sydney on fine day Sundays, maybe have some beers and a laugh afterwards, maybe then I can get another video of the car in action. Thanks for the comments. Wayne.

  • is this fully original?

  • Hi Robo,

It's a GTR XU-1, modified with 40/80 cam not 32/72, has dellorto 45mm triple carbs, not 175 CD's, M21 ratio gearbox, 3.08 lsd diff, Hydraulic Clutch. All mechanicals only 4,650 miles old, no rust complete ground up restore just completed.

I modified it to my taste and use as a Sunday / fine day car. It's reliable and beautiful to drive, look and listen to, like a showroom car inside and out.

I'm not the slightest bit interested in concourse specifications.

    Best Regards.

    Wayne.

  • Thanks for the comments Franzino01, I'm getting the Dellorto carbs setup after Christmas and will be recording a new video of the car in January. This engine is a 202ci. Best Regards. Wayne.

  • now that is an awsome car, good old aussie piece of machinery, i got a 1997 VT XU8, and it sounds awsome, even by todays standards. your XU1 is in really good condition, i just love australian cars, especially torana's. awsome video.

  • Thankyou for your comments ihatenissanskylines, a most interesting handle mate, I know a lot of the blow-off crowd don't even know what my car is, I think its quite funny!

Your XU8 sound terrific, the old Aussie 5 litres sound good and go well. There's probably little comparison between the XU8 and XU1, as good as it looks, its a 70's car with 70's car features, but I love driving it!

Stay posted for the next video in January 08. Best Regards. WayneXU1.

  • I was doin a mach run on a quiet Hunter Valley back road one weekend in my 250cu Cortina (350 Holley, Sonic Extractors, not too much to write home about but it went) and an XU1 went past me like I was standing still. Nice memory of a great Aussie car. Tnx for the post to bring it back.

  • The Ford Cortina 250 was an incredibly fast car in the 70's in stanard trim, they looked great in the Green Metallic or Yellow Wagons I reckon. And a few mods like cam, carb and extractors with a twin exhaust really showed them off. Another terrific car from the 70's. Thankyou for the Message and hope to see it on Youtube some day. Wayne.

  • very nice always liked the 70s toranas and ford coupes, i have a xb coupe :)

  • Love the XB's, the whole Mad Max one was built around that car, and don't they still look amazing today. You've got to love the old 60's - 70's cars, can't beat the sound. Tnx for the message. Wayne.

  • G'day Wayne im 16 and that lj is sweet. my boss he builds racing torana's and since i started i've helped on every one.i and well i like torana's but my fav. is the RA28 celica (1977)case u didn't know yea mine has double solex on the side of my 18rg well any how. nice torana please tell me weither its genuine or not coz i can tell if i actually c the car in the flesh but the vid isn't the best but still sweet

  • That sounds great, I have a 77 Mustang Celica, orange in colour with yamaha head and Turbo, it was a great car to although the suspension needed a lot of work as the car tended to understeer on corners.

    Thanks for the reply. Wayne.

  • farrk that sounds tuf as all hell! great car mate dont ever sell it!

  • A shame you didn't run it thru the gears.

  • good to see and hear classic holden nostalgia instead of just burnouts. more videos like this folks! real live history that my kids can enjoy. that great lumpy sound and cackle. thanks wayne

  • Thankyou for the comment sp9rks, you are very right, from the 351 GT falcon to the XU1 and L34 Torana's, they sound beautiful and worth preserving.

    Best Regards. Wayne.

  • does that have the standard xu1 cam in it?

  • It has the Standard Bathurst Cam 40/80, whereas the regular XU1 has a 32/72 cam.

  • when i get my first LJ torana i wont it to sound like your torana

  • I bought a 9yr old XU1 in 1982 then sold it for $4750 a year later.....DOH... I'm still shitty 24 yrs later.

    Music to my ears.......AAaaahhh

  • Thanks Lex, Yeah I know the feeling when I lost my first car I felt the same for many years. You know, these days a lot of younger people don't know what they are. You can always tell a 70's muscle car, sound, smell and that classic look. Thanks for your comments mate. Wayne.

  • Thankyou to all that have looked at the video and commented on Torana XU1-72J. I had the same colour car in 1980 and it was stolen in 1983. I had the opportunity to buy this one last year (2006)and will be preserving it in its present condition for the future. I will be putting together another video of the car in coming months, and hopefully will include more detail and better quality images.

Best Regards & Enjoy your Life!

    WayneXU1.

  • Lovely car - nice to see one that's so original, right down to the factory alloy wheels - thank you.

  • Thankyou for your kind comments, I had the same colour LJ XU1 when I was 17 years old and it was stolen when I turned 20years. I bought this one last year and had been looking for 3 years previously. It's got a full Bathurst spec engine and the idle is at 1050RPM when warmed up. My Wife and I love the car and will be preserving it in its present condition.

    Thankyou & Best Regards.

    WayneXU1 (Sydney).

  • it aint for sale by any chance is it?

  • V8 eater

  • Mmmmmmmmmm Old School Cool Beautiful Piece of machinery.

  • oh yeah and that sound is so sweet no turbo shit just pure aussie six :)
