This is without a doubt my favorite piece of classical music. EVER. The execution of this particular version is unparalleled from any other recording I have heard to date. This recording is the one I grew up on and the one I will play for my children one day so they realize what a master Saint-Saens really was.
I have been looking for this version of the song, but couldn't find it until tonight! The other versions are just too slow, this one is on point and fits exactly to how I picture skeletons dancing, lol.
You know a rendition of this wonderful piece is reallly good when just listening to it makes you feel as though dark unspeakable entites are dancing to it in your home at that very moment.
This is probably my favorite recording of Danse macabre. All of the other recordings I hear are just too slow and not as punctual - including those considered key recordings by critics.
A correction; this was not performed by Kyung-Wha Chung. She indeed recorded some of French violing show pieces with Dutoit, but that album does not inclued Danse Macabre. I understand DECCA's compliation CD made itself rather unclear, but this was performed by Philharmonia Orce. and Dutoit, and I believe the violin solo was done by the 1st violinist of the orchestra.
@twofinedays that's exactly what I thought. on the CD cover, it looked like Chung played the violin solo, but if you actually hear it, you know that it's not Chung. I recently bought the whole Chung's Decca recordings (both LP->CD & CD) and it doesn't have danse macabre
It is rather strange to have an advert for Madonna''s album before this...

Nice solo at the beginning! The purposefully altered intonation makes the music sound creepier!

Who's the main violinist? They're flawless.
