  • Fake look at his lips when they

  • Isn't that second tune the "New Copperplate" rather than the old one?

  • @davidtunderthesea As far as I know it's just The Copperplate, not old or new.

  • These are Great songs and performed Excellently. Lots of Talent. I like the name too.

    from a Scottsman Irv Ferguson

  • who are the 2 people that disliked? they should be shot. this lad is great

  • Very nice playing from Fergus. I do believe that is a Martin Doyle flute the lad was playing - nice tone he's getting from it.

  • best young flute player without a doubt.

    --amazing!

  • is his flute tunable in DD? or are all irish wooden flutes tuned like that?

  • His flute is in D because if it is in another key, his playing wouldn't sound in the key he is playing over here.

Irish flutes can be made in a variety of keys. The Irish flute is basically the original simple-system concert flutes, so as you would imagine some were made as piccolos too.

Common tenor range flutes (normally played in Irish music) are Eb, D, C and Bb. There are some in C# and B, and other keys higher up the range, but not as popular. Upper range already filled by tin whistle.

  • @deterdettol Who the heck thumbs-downed my comment. That's how the Irish flute works.

  • great job! i wish i could play flute like that

  • omg his playing's savage!!! :)

  • Ah boy fergus!feckin mighty!

  • It's great to see you so young playing so well! Just as a pointer though, add emotion to your reels! That's what makes the tunes come alive!! And try to hide your breaths between beats rather than using them as additional beats. But you are awesome -- keep it up!

  • i love fergus!! in fact hes in my calss right now behind me!!!

  • I thought this regional sligo style was dead. You play like a real Shamus Tansey !

    God bless you lad...

    keep up the good work...

Everybody sounds same today But Not you mate !

ole East Galway Style Flute player

    A Humble Christopher :)

  • I pushed the "down thumb" when I meant to say, "UP UP UP."

That is some great playing for a young man - and for older ones too.

  • hey upkilt, seamus tansey loves this guy, ive seen them play together a good few times. if he and everyone else thinks he's great then leave him alone! he doesn't play like that now though...hes even better! go on!

  • okaaay...im goin over here with the mature musicians now. lol. 'go neiri an bothar leat agus cuir stocai i do bheal. amadan!' as we irish guys wud say. or maybe even 'pioc do ceann amach as do thoin mar nil aon fhios agat i gceol tradisiunta'. ta tu as do bhosca! lol!

  • I was a Gaelic scholar, so I'm glad the language is in use. I'm also glad most ppl don't know what you wrote. Hmm, mature indeed.

  • young man u r quality, and the tunes u couldn't have picked better, seamus tansey watch yur spot!!!!!

  • That lad makes it look easy!

  • AAAAAAAHhhhhhhhhhhhh fergie I love it

  • Upkilt,

We all take a little from the masters and make it our own. How can you take anything away from this lad? He's fantastic.

  • Yes, you are taking something away from somebody. This young man is a fantastic player. If you think he needs to develop his own style some more, okay, but your remarks are arrogant at best. To say listeners don't understand Irish music b/c they disagree with you is arrogant, as well as ignorant. Good luck to you.

  • Besides, look how young he is! it takes a long time to get your own style. Matt Molloy didn't get his style for a few years, and neither did Tansey, Egan,Crawford, or McGoldrick.

  • you should learn how to use apostrophes

  • do i sense some bitterness upkilt? if you knew traditional music you'd know that if someone so young, he is 14 there by the way, is learning and listening to the greats like tansey invariably they are going to play like him and why not! everyone loves to play like their idol, but as time passes people develop their own style based on the influence listening to others brings. and anyway, its a regional style. it's not a ripoff. if you think this than you must not listen to much irish music.

  • how intelligent, calling someone an idiot. and what you said about people not liking being called wrong, well, i think your demeanor just answered that. who cares if you won the fleadh! lol! no one likes comhaltas or that style these days, maybe only in america. and wow three sessions a week! well done there!lol. that doesn't make anyone a good musician. and 'FYI' if you listened to music you'd know who this boy was then you would not be acting in the petulant way you are now.

  • well its good that you think so highly of yourself, someone has to. nobody judges a musician by how many gis they get, thats what i meant. im a musician and ive played with many people my whole life but i dont go around telling them they are copycats not least a kid. they respect me and i respect them. if you know so much about music why so little of it? its a small world trad music and you should know better. if he or anyone he knows saw what you said they would laugh!

  • oh and one more thing, buy the next volume of the flute players of roscommon cd. fergus is on it playing with john blake, great guitar player. he plays a brilliant paddy obrien version of the moving cloud. now is that copying i wonder...he plays sligo roscommon style for goodness sake, similar to, you might have heard of these, matt molloy, tommy guihan, catherine mac, john + james carty, josie mcdermott, john wynne, etc. look them up actuallyno point wasting these names on you. good day to you!

  • Wow, very nice playing. You can tell he's Catherine McEvoy's son.

  • Well done, Fergus. Looking forward to hearing you more often on Youtube!

  • Impressive playing from such a young man. Right on!

  • Brilliant playing!
